Actually you can apply it because there's precedent for it. Damon has gone without delighting in misery and pain. He can eat fresh but the point was he didn't need to do what he did. He wanted to hurt Bill and so he attacked him. The gang was trying to stop him causing a bigger issue than what already existed. They can be symbols but at the same time, he doesn't need to kill anyone right unless he wants to. That's the problem.

Well in Humble's comment they do paint Stefan in a negative light. They paint it like Stefan is the reason the brother's relationship is so bad because he doesn't try while Damon only does good things when it comes to his brother. Both of the brothers are to blame. Stefan for not asking more and digging deeper and Damon for not communicating anything

Do I agree that Elena was trying to turn Damon into Stefan-lite, sure. However there's a big difference between having Damon act like Stefan and wanting him to not be so self-destructive. He embraces it to an extent. He hasn't learned how to control his emotions which is a big thing with vampires. Stefan has great control over his emotions while Damon sucks at it. They need each other for the part they can't help.

Damon is the one of the two brothers that is in control he does what is necessary what other don't want to do. Bill was threatening to expose them, tortured Caroline and couldn't be compelled so he was a threat. He had the permission of LIZ to feed on him and he took advantage of it because he is a vampire and have the occasion of eating fresh blood is rare and make them more powerful. So unless you are a threat no there is any problem with Damon he is in control of his lust. Alaric wanted to control him because he was already under the influence of the ring and Elena wanted to make him into Stefan.

Damon's problem with control of his emotion when people hurt him is deep rooted in how he was treated in life by his family since he was a child and it is perfectly understandable. The only cure for the brothers problems are each other love and care, but Damon needs someone who loves him for who he is too to show him he is too worth loving.

Well my comment was to Harry.. the reactor. I am well aware people in the comments have put Stefan in a negative light in order to defend all of Damon's actions in this season.. but Harry has not bashed either brother was my point..

@Latrae Osborne, there is a reason why I paint Stefan in a “negative light.” There is a hidden meaning behind all this which I will comment on at the series finale. That hidden meaning is what makes TVD's story among the brothers so beautiful.

I didn’t like Damon snapping Alaric neck, you do not do that to your friends and Alaric is right to be pissed, but at the same time I didn’t like Alaric asking Damon to take a beat with Elena. Elena is now 18 and she seems to be finally a bit happy around Damon. It is not Alaric business to interfere that much. That to me was out of line, even if he is taking a parenting role, imagine your parents going to your possible love interest and tell him to take a beat. Wouldn’t you be horrified with embarrassment? Also people forget that Damon is a person that has lived for 170 years, and people that are in their 30's or much younger are telling him how to behave. I would be so irritated, like he was, and quite rightfully so. Elena, started to like Damon more openly, but in her mind, in order to admit it, he has to act like his brother does pretending to be human, living a lie, being socially accepted by her friends. I absolutely love the way Damon reacted. He isn't apologetic with Elena about been a vampire, or with anybody else, that is a big difference between him and Stefan. Stefan was pretending to be human in front of Elena, so she never had really confronted the fact that she is actually dating a vampire. Suppressing your nature has consequences, as we know with Stefan that doesn’t have a middle ground, or he is a good behaviour, too good to be true, Stefan or he is the ripper, because he's never learn to control his vampirism, he just repressed it, until it comes out like a blasting bomb and if Damon is bad, Stefan when is bad is ten time worse. Damon, strangely enough, is actually more stable in that department; he is all middle ground and he stands strongly on it. He faced his vampirism and deal with it, because that's who he is and he can't do anything about it but embrace it. What Damon is telling to Elena is "I'm not Stefan, that's what I am and if you think I'm a monster why are you around me? I'm a vampire, so take it or leave it" and that is self respect, he doesn’t kiss Elena’s ass for fear to lose her like Stefan does. That is a great allegory for relationships in real life. You can't go around trying to change people according to what you would like that person to be, people are what they are. And on the other hand if you try to hide who you are with the purpose of getting the person you love, your real personality will come out before or after with devastating consequences, on which many divorces are based on (I thought you were different... when I met you, you were another person... you've changed...etc.). And if you like someone, you have to love what that someone is and respect it, or decide that, that someone is not the person for you.

Remember Harry you cannot apply normal life parameter of ethic here, because this is a world of fantasy that exist only in the permeter of the writer rules. It is like going to visit someone's house in a foreign country with their own traditions and habits, you politely have to leave your own outside the door and embrace the rules of the house. In this case vampires are like lions, on the top of the pyramis of the food chain, you don't see the damage that steeling blood bags do, but in an hospital those blood bags go to patience and if they got stolen there will be someone dying anyway. The point is that vampires food on human blood to function, you wouldn't blame a lion for killing a human passer by because he needed food. Same thing, here but plus here vampires are an allegory for everything that is discriminatory, they are a message loud and clear to people that people you percive different from you are not monsters also to have compassion for less fortunate people dealing with huge issues, acting out.

Damon is on edge from the beginning of this season because one he is guilty about his brother not being where he should be because Stefan chose to save his life. Secondly he has to also be worried about Elena. And if you add all the other expectations people have of him and comparing him to Stefan is going to be extremely frustrating. I'm not defending the fact that he was wrong to lash out and hurt Alaric because that was simply wrong! He needs to work on these things but is it true to Damon's character? Yes. When he is functioning on high emotions he doesn't know how to process them and lashes out. Alaric being worried about Damon and Elena's growing closeness is understandable because maybe he is worried that things lately have been too much for Elena to be dealing with and he probably doesn't want any more issues. But I can't expect Damon to take his interference with his relationship with Elena well. Again it's because he feels judged by his friend. Damon helping Elena cook and be around her has nothing to do with him trying to pursue rather he is trying to be around because he doesn't want her to feel alone and is only there to comfort her by making her smile for those few moments. And despite all the good intentions if you're going to be judged it's going to make one angry. Coming to Elena's expectations of Damon is very unfair. He isn't Stefan and he doesn't want to be and he shouldn't be just like Stefan is no Damon. I think Elena is struggling with her growing feelings for Damon which she doesn't want to admit is simply because she feels she is going to be judged. She is going to be judged and compared to Katherine which is wrong because Katherine was fooling around both brothers by choice whereas Elena's feelings aren't planned; it's natural. But she is also scared to fall for someone like Damon who isn't seen in the greatest light as Stefan by her friends and others. So there are quite a few factors here. I absolutely loved Damon giving it back to her and reminding her that he is a vampire and nothing can change that and she needs to stop trying to change him into Stefan. It's just not fair. If she wants him in her life she should accept him for who he is just like he lets her be herself. He has never given her the wrong expectations by hiding his darkness so she can't be holding on to false hopes. Katherine in this episode is giving us too many surprises. Firstly good thing she saved Stefan from the witch Gloria and then she comes looking for Damon as her partner in crime which I'm very excited about because I honestly love watching them together bickering and yet make a good team. We don't know what she is trying to achieve from this but we shall find out soon.

A Youtuber once said that if we looked at The Vampire Diaries backward, then Damon's behavior would make sense. Even with everything that happened to Damon, his driving force was love. Damon without love would not exist, yet love was denied to him by so many until Elena came around. Stefan is telling the story as stated by him in the pilot episode, and so far, Stefan has been painting Damon in a bad light which makes perfect sense for Stefan’s character, which negates his vampire nature. Stefan doesn't even try to understand his brother, but he is very judgemental of Damon. It is interesting that even with all the behavior modification toward Damon, everyone seeks him out for his help rather than Stefan. Even when Elena is with Stefan at the moment, it is her father, John Gilbert, who sought out Damon to deal with issues. We never saw John Gilbert looking for Stefan”s help to protect Elena. Jeremy, Alaric, Liz Forbes, Anna, Pearl, John, Carol Lockwood, Elena, and Stefan have asked Damon to help them. The only people who have sought Stefan’s help have been Elena and Caroline. Alaric asked for Stefan's help once in season one. Now, is it interesting that more people ask for Damon’s help? Another thing to consider when looking at the story for the first time is that we get to experience it from Elena's point of view, who is finding out things as the story moves along but is ignorant of what has transpired between the brothers in the past. She only knows a few things but not everything. Elena has yet to find out what happened to Damon. TVD was written in a misdirection manner where the fourth wall was not broken down to see the whole picture, but the writers did gave us clues to what is happening to the three main characters, which are Damon, Elena and Stefan.

I love to see your perspective and how you love both brothers without putting either in a negative light. Its soo refreshing to see! I feel a lot of people in the comments tend to shit on Stefan because they love Damon & vice versa. Sometimes the love triangle with Elena makes the fandom biased.
