I believe this was the episode where either the fans or the producers started having the idea of a spin-off of the originals. That wasn't the original plan at all but the characters they created (especially Rebekah, Elijah and Klaus) were just too good to be a one season type of thing and honestly that was a smart choice :D

I understand that Ellena has the right to make her choices, and Damon didn't handle the situation smoothly but let us please look at the other side of the coin in this scenario. Although we have the right to make choices, our choices affect other people. Elena was aware that Ester had tried to kill Elena at least three times so far, and now at the Michealson’s ball, Ester wanted to see Elena alone. Doesn't that seem suspicious after everything she has done so far to Elena? Doesn't it seem naive for Elena to comply with being alone with Ester? Elena didn't know what Ester was up to, but we all saw how relieved Elena was when she learned that Ester only required a few drops of her blood. This scenario could have turned very different for Elena, especially with the history of Ester trying to kill Elena. The way Stefan and Elena carried out their plan was wrong for not considering Ester's previous actions toward Elena. I do agree with Damon, but the way he handled the situation was wrong. Now let's imagine that Elena was your daughter. Would you let her see Ester by herself?

Can we have a round of applaud for this episode? This episode looked luxurious; the outfits, the décor, the music and the insane amount of good looks....in simple words "gorgeous"😍😍😍I think each one of them looked absolutely ethereal in the beautiful gowns and men dressed up in suits! Coming to the episode this was more of like an introduction to the Mikaelson family and Ester's plans. But for me this show has always been mainly about Stefan, Elena and Damon so I'm going to be more focused on how their journey goes ahead. Although the Originals add their own charm to the storyline. I remember vividly how furious I was when I watched ‘Dangerous Liaisons.’ It seemed like such an unnecessary and infuriating setback because Elena said something she didn’t mean in the heat of an argument. But lets go back to the moment Elena enters the ballroom and we see Damon gazing at her and just look at the spark in his eyes! The imagery of Elena taking both of the brother's arms as she enters reminds us that this love triangle probably won't be ending anytime soon😂 Damon being the protective one and trying to stop Elena from being alone with Ester is showing us how some of the challenges from Season 2 are trickling in as Damon wants to override Elena's choice in order to keep her safe. Though this time, his efforts don't seem so impulsive. To avoid a fight we see him trying to lighten the mood and asks for the dance and to which I loved Elena's response because it is a tradition! There is no way there is a dance going on and we don't see them dancing. Elena pulls away from Damon and because she realises that she has to be free to make her own choices, and while she knows Damon's intentions are good, she pulls away and begins to pull back to Stefan. I guess this is something she has always and will always love about Stefan that he lets her take these decisions. But perhaps Elena is being a little harsh on Damon here-he has learnt to let her make her own decisions/choices, but there comes a point where one must draw the line. He couldn't let her jump off a bridge just because she wanted to make her own choices. I know Elena is only just starting to realize that there is something more between her and Damon. She had been aware of Damon’s feelings for her for months and up until this ball they had both handled the situation with no small amount of grace. Damon didn’t try to force anything on Elena because Stefan was gone. He simply did everything he could to get his brother back for her. Even when it became obvious that things were definitely coming to their end with Stefan and Elena, They still only kissed once and never crossed the line further. And to be honest, Elena has actually been quite respectful of Damon’s feelings for her. She accepted them and learned to appreciate the positive effect they could have on her life, because Damon’s love for her means he will always be there. And in a world as difficult and tragic as Elena’s, she needs someone like that. Someone who will stick by her side through everything. The thing with Damon is that the idea of anything happening to Elena sends Damon into a wild frenzy of panic and fear that he hid behind biting sarcasm and barely contained rage. When she went behind his back and met up with Esther alone Damon was furious. Because what if something had happened to her when he hadn’t been there to help, to protect her from the very real psychosis of the original family. Damon doesn't like losing control especially when it is related to the people he loves. For that matter even Katherine! Elena, in contrast, was calm, cold and calculated. She’d made a clinical and impulsive decision to try and save them all from Klaus. She’d put herself at risk for the sake of everyone else. Damon included. So she couldn’t let him jeopardize it all by trying to put her safety above everyone else’s. And she let him know quite brutally that his feelings for her were clouding his judgment, leading him to make decisions that didn’t factor in the danger it could cause everyone around them. "Maybe that's the problem" and his reaction every time makes me cry like if it's the first I am going through these feelings. I myself don't like the way Damon was holding her and sort of wanting to drag her out of the place. It is wrong! But I am trying to understand both of their perspectives. Damon was brutally hurt and there are major reasons. I feel like the first thing he felt was betrayal in this episode. It wasn't just that Elena teamed up with Stefan. I believe it was part of the deal, no matter what. But what was worse was that it showed Elena didn't trust him although over the summer they grew to be a team, partners, friends and she said she trusted him. While they worked together on finding Stefan or killing Klaus, Elena unconditionally trusted that Damon knew what was best for her. Given the fact that Elena goes behind his back the moment Stefan has returned to how he used to be, Damon feels like he was temporary replacement for Stefan while he was away. But even more so, he's terrified. Terrified of what could have happened to her and mad that he couldn't prevent it. Again like every other character; his past traumas play an important role for this trait of his. Elena says that he would have tried to be the hero and it would have ruined everything which only further confirms her lack of trust. You know what else scares Damon? The fact that his feelings for Elena may get in the way and not let him think clearly. Stefan already accused him of this earlier in the episode, and Damon, who relied on his thinking skills, immediately connects these facts. Ironically it's the fact that he loves Elena that makes her stop trusting him and his judgement-which isn't true but he feels that way. He saves Matt which was good and vents his anger that way, but everybody again doesn't believe him and judges him instead. Damon hates feeling scared, or helpless, and betrayal and lack of trust are what hurt him even more. In the end when Damon hooks with Rebekah it's not for anyone else but it's about him. It's his way of regaining control of how he controls his emotions and not the other way around. And I think it's fine honestly because both of them in agreement. I know Elena instantly regretted her words but she still has a long way to understand things at her own end firstly before she fully understands how Damon priorities her above everything else which isn't to disrespect her choice but simply to keep her alive. I also agree though it's important to understand the line between being protective and controlling because the day people understand that it would be do wonders! Stefan lets Elena do what she likes but the problem is that he doesn't know where she is taking things too far for her own good.

This episode is the birth of the spin off as Jenny pointed out . The Mikealson family all in smart attire on the grand staircase is such an iconic sight. Everybody looked fantastic and Caroline looked like a Disney princess. Her unafraid frank told off to one of the most powerful creatures on earth, Klaus, made her grow in respect exponentially. I must say that this time, and that is the only time, that the dance was stolen by the chemistry between Stefan and Elena. The love they have for each other is still there even if Stefan is not the person, he presented himself as, to Elena, in the first season, the bunny eater level headed, “when have I ever wanted to hurt anybody?” as he said in one of the many lies he hide himself behind when Elena didn’t know his secrets and his ripper personality. Now the cards are out. Elena knows who she has dated, and she is still holding on to the part of Stefan that helped her to cope with her parents loss, that remind her the part of her life before she was aware of her supernatural nature, before everything changed, the exciting mystery guy that is crazy in love with her that does everything she says without questioning, without her having to question her believes, her actions, her life. And here is the problem. Elena is used to Stefan comply with every decision, every choice, every impulsive action, without questioning anything, he doesn’t challenge her, never. This is not respecting your partner choice, because is void of self-respect and is born out of fear of loosing the partner or their respect. This is a mental health issue called Co-dependency that is actually a dangerous issue and that Stefan has all the clear sign of it. A health couple relationship should not be scared to voice their concern or strong disagreements without any fear, because it comes from a place of love and from a place of self-respect. Nobody would let the love of their life going consciously on a potential suicidal mission without trying everything possible to dissuade him/her from doing it. And that is the case of Damon and Elena, he might look too abrasive in his manner, because he is frustrated with her stubbornness and her lack of cautiousness, he cannot protect her from a powerful witch that has attempt already to kill her and that insists of seen her alone. Even Elijah is suspicious. So no, I’m with Damon too, I understand perfectly why he is scared and concerned out of his mind, and why he is pissed off beyond believe after having his neck snapped, being told he is a liability from Stefan, of all people, and hear from Elena that his love is a problem, an inconvenience, reminding him, he has being there with Katherine, used and left behind because his love was inconvenient. So this time, he channel his disappointment on something actually good, saving Matt from crazy Kol. But as usual because of his reputation, everybody is on his case, instead of recognising that he did something good. That is how his reputation follow him and branded him unjustifiably “bad”, no matter what he does, that is why he doesn’t defend himself, saying what Kol was doing, that is why he lets everybody believe whatever. He gave up on giving explanations, he gave up on trying to change people prospective on his bad reputation, he gave them what they want, “bad Damon” even if it not true, even if he does good things. So sex revenge with Rebekah is his real reaction, his “what’s the point?” His middle finger to everybody that pushed him to feel and when he finally does, he feelings are inopportune.

I still find it ridiculous that Damon was able to beat Kol. Though despite that, I agree Kol is scary in the sense that you never know when he's going to do something absolutely outrageous.

Maribel Humble

Damon, walking like a boss after breaking Kol’s neck. I love that shit ‼️‼️

Maribel Humble

Remember that Caroline was able to kick Damon's ass in the earlier episode of this season because she was angrier at Damon, so maybe his anger and attacking out of nowhere made him have the upper hand on Kol.

Seb

Perhaps, but if just anger can add 800 years of strength to a Vampire, the originals really aren't too much of a threat anymore.
