Damon like it or not is brutally honest, so what he said to Caroline might sound harsh or perhaps unnecessary but is the truth. If he was in Stefan’s place, he would have used every possible argument to dissuade her from experimenting with Liz health. Stefan is always obliging, to avoid to be unpleasant, or unpleasantness, as we all do sometimes, but diplomacy in case like this one can cause problems, because in his diplomatic approach, he is not doing the best interest of Liz or Caroline. A true close friend would have taken a stronger position and dissuade her, by pointing out that there could have been the possibility that she would have make things worse. And that is was what Elena was saying to Stefan, because that is what is needed with true friends when they are going to put themselves in trouble. As we say “the tender-hearted doctor makes the wound verminous” and that is just the case being not totally frank with Caroline and let her control freak nature take control in the situation lead to lots of problem to everybody. As she recognised after and stated in her own words her control freak nature made her do something that is not her business to do. On the other side, I understand Caroline, she wanted to do all she could, try every possible option. But being a vampire gives you false sense of omnipotence, being eternal makes you think that you can do everything, and you can't. I love the writers to include this very painful chapter of Liz and how they decided to explore it, how important is to be human and how we are not made to last eternally, because it alters the perception of what is important and of our limitations. Liz character was supposed to be in just few episodes, instead she lasted that long because she is so beloved, her relationships with Caroline, with Damon, with Elena, with everybody, are adorable.

Luke woke up and then died. It was a bit confusing since Jo had said "whichever one wakes up wins" and then he woke up, but yeah he just died after that. Also, not sure if you caught everything their dad was saying. I know in past episodes you were frustrated over the Gemini merge tradition, but in this episode the dad explains that if they don't do the merge, then the entire coven will die

Of course Damon's words were harsh but at the end of the day he made sure that Liz is not dead yet and that Caroline does not have to live with the thought of having killed her mother. As for Stefan, once again he didn't want to be the bearer of bad news. As he says himself, "I didn't want to be the one to destroy Caroline's hope". But that was exactly the wrong thing to do because Caroline is no longer able to think clearly in this situation. How could she? Her mum is dying and she wants to try everything. She needed someone to help her sort out her thoughts and then make a decision, and unfortunately Stefan didn't do that. Friends are not just there to say yes to everything. They also have to give you their opinion when they think you are making the wrong decision.

In the previous episode, Damon told Caroline he had not seen vampire blood cure cancer, so he knew Liz would eventually die. Damon told Kai to siphon the vampire's blood out of Liz, so she didn't end up with excruciating pain like the patient with stage 10 cancer.

Comment from Newmoon: “I do really appreciate the way the writers handled the cancer story line when it comes to biology. In order to understand perfectly why vampire blood makes cancer worse, first we have to understand what exactly vampire blood does to body physiologically. Vampire blood can heal a wound and injury by speeding up the cell replication process around the injured area. Most injuries will be healed by their own but it’s gonna take time for the cells to replicate and rebuild the damaged tissue but the magic inside vampire blood will make the cells reproduce faster than usual and renew the damaged area in shorter time. Now let’s look at the nature of cancer: Cancer cells are a group of abnormal cells that will start replicating without getting the appropriate signals to do so. Despite of the absence of those signals, the cells with keep replicating uncontrollably and don’t obey the order to stop or to self destruct. So obviously if we give vampire blood (the magic to speed up the cell replication process) to a cancer patient who already has extremely fast cell replication problem, those cancer cells are gonna get even stronger and grow and spread even faster. Vampire blood might at first heals the damage tissue(normal cells) caused by cancer but it also will give power to the abnormal cells to replicate even more uncontrollably and eventually kill the patient. And if they turned in to a vampire, cancer cells will have a constant source of magic to help them replicate faster, making it impossible for them to live normally as a vampire. There’s is always a logical explanation for how even magic works in this show and I really appreciate the writers for paying attention to biological part of this story line and how it could realistically be affected by magic.”

Newmoon comment two: “About Stefan and Elena conversation; one of Stefan’s flaws is his fear of conflict and disturbance, he will respect the most dangerous decision people around him make because he doesn’t have the courage to tell them the brutal truth and disrupt the peace to prevent them from making that huge mistake , here in this situation Elena was telling the absolute truth, but Stefan as usual doesn’t want to accept it and hold himself accountable for the mistakes he made, so he turned the situation around to Elena and make this about her and losing Damon and made her even feel guilty for what she said but this comparison doesn’t apply here because, first of all, for Elena, Damon was already dead but Caroline’s mom was still alive second of all Elena didn’t blame Caroline, the person who’s currently in pain, like how she was in pain after Damon’s death but she’s talking about Stefan who was supposed to be her sounding board and her sane voice. Stefan gave Caroline false hope and as the result he caused her more pain by allowing her to make this huge mistake. With that being said I also absolutely loved the way he talked to Caroline afterwards and convinced her to come and see her mom. Stefan is really good with words and knows exactly what to say in times like this to comfort people. About Damon I agree that he was harsh towards Caroline, she made a huge mistake but it was out of love but Damon might say the harshest things but his actions do the opposite, Damon was the man of action by making a difficult decision yet again. We have to remember Liz was gonna die before the day was even over and because she still had vampire blood in her system, she would’ve come back as a vampire and they would’ve had to kill her, not a really respectful way to go. Damon was able to save Liz for now and bought her some more few days, otherwise she would’ve been dead in this episode, he didn’t just protect Liz, he protected Caroline too and saved her from huge guilty conscience and self blame. If what she did had actually resulted in her mother’s death, she would’ve never forgiven herself.”

OHHHHHHH, ngl I did hear it but I assumed he meant that the coven would cease to exist or smthn cause the tradition was gone 😭I remember at the time being confused on how that would work but makes a lot more sense taking it literally 😂

Harry Allen

Oh okay, I was taking it as more of an attempt to heal her to give her a better chance if finding a human cure, rather than just easing her pain. Makes more sense now.
