What i really love about this entire season so far, and what is beautifully captured in this episode in particular, is that we really get to see how much our boys have grown. Season 1 Sam and Dean would never have made the choices that season 11 Sam and Dean are making. The way the boys are finally able to communicate with each other, openly, and honestly, and without reservation is so gratifying, after watching them go through everything that lead them here- the apocalypse, Yellow Eyes, the trials, the Cage, the Mark. And particularly with Dean this episode, we get to see him not just as the big brother that we all know and love him to be. Even as recently as last season, Dean was always pushing Sam back, or behind him, or out of the way. He was trying to keep Sam from the line of fire, trying to protect him however he could. But this episode we get to see him treat Sam as more than just his brother. Dean openly shows his trust and faith in Sam as a hunter, as his partner, and he asks Sam to carry some of the weight. To do what he doesn't think he can. He doesn't try to take on Amara entirely himself, like he tried to with the trials, or with fighting Michael and Lucifer. And Sam doesn't argue with him, or judge him, or second guess. He empathizes with Dean, and explains why he understands. He offers his support to his brother, instead of trying to sneak around behind Dean's back, or go against what Dean wants. Sam letting Dean know he is there for him, and Dean admitting that he needs it, is just such phenomenal character growth and I love that even in kind of a "Monster of the Week", one-off episode like this, season 11 just keeps letting us see these boys learning from and acting on their past experiences and mistakes, and also showing us how much stronger, smarter, more capable hunters they are because of it

I know Jess has said many times now how sick of, if not the outright dishonesty, then the secret keeping that the boys take part in; the lies of omission. Here, yeah, the boys finally exhibit some big growth that they’ve gone through by shooting straight with each other, and it is immensely refreshing. I’m not too big into this fandom, but as I understand it, plenty of the fans were quite happy about this too, yes? Good notes about how Dean asks Sam to carry some of the weight, and how Sam in turn offers the empathy and understanding. Good stuff in what’s a monster of the week style episode. I still wish they wouldn’t have announced that Amara would pop up in some way shape or form, thus you already know that this episode won’t be entirely standalone in nature. Or at least the element of surprise is gone. Though the overarching arc coming into play does lead to that great moment of honesty and candor between the boys, so it balances out.
