Faction Paradox

Ncuti is just so DAMN GOOD in this story

Tick Macphee

I really need to stick to just one corner of the internet because I absolutely adored this episode and all I’ve seen online is 95% negativity.

Scott Sutherland

will you be reacting to Doctor Who at the prom 2024?

Faction Paradox

I definitely have some issues with this story & Moffat did his Moffaty tropes but for me, it was a much needed burst of positivity

Andrew Vignaux

Thanks for the reaction. You have "ruined" - no, that's not the word - "altered" my watching of Doctor Who stories whenever a T-Rex comes on screen. It's never "Look, a dinosaur - cool!". Now, I just think "Betty!"

Going into this, I knew Moffat was the writer. And with that, you knew he wasn’t going to top The Husbands of River Song, so my expectations were telling myself, “Just have fun out there.” Rather love how you temporarily forgot that Moffat was set to write this special, and your reaction to remembering that was delightful. A Christmas gift to both of us. Just as this whole special was a Christmas gift to both of us. We both hold great love for this special. It is, as you say, it had most everything you could want from a Doctor Who Christmas special. Moffat continues his historical predilection of making you cry with his Christmas specials. Still feels tame in that respect compared to how you wept when seeing The Time of the Doctor, the shared sobbing we both had with The Husbands of River Song, not to mention Twice Upon a Time, (really all of his specials with Twelve made me sob) but damn did this one get you, and it makes for such a powerful reaction. This one did feel reasonably standalone. A solid and confusing opening. The question of the tray being rejected, in my case, I don’t much care for ham and cheese sandwiches, and much though I do love pumpkin, my coffee preference is plain coffee that is hot, strong, and black, plenty of caffeine, so, I would pass on the tray that the Doctor was offering, though yeah, you do hope somebody got to it. Somewhat related to that: A bigger on the inside coffee mug would be heaven, yes. Knew you would quite like Trev, and subsequently, you’d be saddened by his death. Your reaction proving that gets a man right in the heart. Then there was the reveal that he kept fighting the good fight, and again, you reaction was lovely. That part made me say to Trev, “God bless ya, Sir.” Your tearful reaction to the Silurian’s death was less anticipated, though it also, hits right in the heart. Would have been nice to have more Jonathan Aris in the role, but it’s nice to see him. The special is greatly supported by the duality that you highlighted. First, in the sweet Anita, darling woman that she is. Steph de Whalley was damn impressive in the role. How you observe, she just doesn’t have anyone to spend time with during the holidays. Gets us both in the heart how the Doctor is with her for the year and just experiences the normalcy of that sweet friendship; having, among other things, such lovely chair nights. Funny how you miss the little things. Do hope we get to see Anita again. They’re indicating that Anita will be on staff at the time hotel. If I were the Doctor, I would do one better and say that she’d have an invitation to be on staff at Sesska’s Spa. This would seem a good idea to you, Jess? Yes? No? The flip side to this coin is Joy’s story. You spoke of it well: The feelings of disappointing people being dredged up during the holidays; missing loved ones who have died, and/or as you said, when one is with family, experiencing the feelings that you wish you were better. All of that is strongly felt on my end anymore. Makes the holidays somewhat unbearable. Brings me to my big emotional reaction to this special. Past a point, I observed how the special was going light on the tears and heartbreak. For me, at least. Usually, Moffat throws something in there to incite both in his Christmas specials, and it was starting to feel like he was slacking. Even the scenes of Anita felt more heartwarming than sad, tear inducing though said scenes are. Then we got to the scene of Joy unloading to the Doctor about her mom, which got both the tears and heartbreak going, and I said, “Aaaand there it is.” No, seriously, that part instantly got me to start sobbing bad enough, that I had to pause. That dug DEEP into some wounds and then tore said wounds wide open. That scene was absurdly relatable. Maybe not down to the smallest tiny detail, no, but there was visceral relatability at that scene. That hurt WAY too goddamn much. Going through it again just watching your reaction. Jesus Christ did Nicola Coughlan destroy my emotions in that scene. Thankfully there is the reprieve from the surprise Betty appearance, that upon seeing it, you were the very first person I thought of when I saw it, Jess. There was the hope that people wouldn’t say jackshit about it until you saw it, and your heavenly reaction to Betty was everything. Quick segue to the Jurassic Park of it all. I know the Betty of it all. You speak of becoming quite sadistic when seeing Betty noshing on some bitches and expressing uncertainty as to what that says about you. I suppose it is vexing. But considering my fictional beloveds... Who am I to judge? I remember the recent Jurassic Park movie being booted off the poll, and I shared your feelings of being upset about that, as I was very much looking forward to what a wonderful reaction that would have been, as I knew you’d have loved the film. Your statements imply you did see it, I hope so, as again, you’d love it. I saw it with a buddy of mine, and we quite liked it. It was great fun, and very emotional. You, you’d love it. Gets the tears going again seeing Joy ascend and become the Star of Bethlehem. All your reactions to that and all the emotional scenes in this overwhelmed. Sobbed again when we see the scene with Joy’s mom. Good to see Millie as Ruby again, if only for a short moment. All in all, this special was just so sweet and lovely, and your reaction has made it all so much better, Jess, thank you so much.

Good to see that I’m not the only one who’s experienced the altered viewing experience with seeing a T-Rex in Doctor Who, as yeah, there are now always shouts of “Aaaah! Betty!!” when it happens to me as well.

Thomas Corp

There was a fair amount of Moffaty tropes, which is fine by me as I love those. The thing of ninety-five percent negativity is news to me. Mind you, I haven’t deep dived all that much into fan reception, even so I see that said, and I just say, “First I’ve heard that one.” The one complaint that I have heard that sounds objectively fair is that people are saying how they could have used a lot more Anita. Makes me say, “I can understand that.” I do hope we see her again. This special was lovely. I had a grand time.

I'm very happy for everyone who loves this episode, truly. That said, I can't even say I hate it, and basically had Ted Danson's reaction to karaoke in The Good Place. "There's no point to it, the images on the screen relate to nothing, some time passed, and then it was over." And all the pieces are there to make a quality story, but the one black hole in the middle is Joy. As a Bridgerton fan, I came into this really excited to see what Nicola Coughlin could bring to this role, and while she has a few great moments, she just can't overcome the fact that the episode's entire setup and structure mean we hardly get to spend any time with her as either the Doctor is hanging out with other people or she's possessed. I had a much bigger emotional reaction to literally every other character here, including the few seconds of Ruby, which is kind of a big problem when the emotional climax hinges on her sacrificing her life and the Doctor crying about it. Moffat tries to make up for it with her monologue about her mother, which Coughlin crushes, but I was so cognizant of the gears turning and the show shouting at me "You will feel this!" that I couldn't get on board. And I have to wonder, has the BBC and/or Disney put up a Voldemort rule about COVID? Because it was incredibly distracting how the dialogue tied itself in knots to avoid mentioning it by name. As for the ending, it's not nearly as bad as I was worried about ever since I caught on to where this was going as soon as the Doctor says "No room at the inn" in quick succession with mention of a star. Just like George Carlin, I was Catholic until I reached the age of reason, and that included watching a ton of horrible religious-themed movies and specials. I'm fully willing to acknowledge the rare one that does it well, but so far Dallas Jenkins is the only one who's really cracked the code on how to consistently do it in a quality, positive, and non-condescending way. But this one does pretty well at it too, simply by taking the Small One approach of not seeming to be about the subject at all until springing it in the closing moments. Now if only they weren't a year off on the final caption, which I got a big laugh about. There's the occasional other good bit here, and I especially loved the Doctor starting this mission totally subconsciously and having to figure out his own thought process, because who hasn't been there? But overall it just didn't add up to much, and if it really is Moffat's swan song on the show, it's a very depressing note to go out on after he did so much great work.

"Joy Almondo"! The clue is in her (full) name...

Out of over 1200 voters on Gallifrey Base forum, 60% gave it 7, 8, 9 or 10 out of 10 scores - "well above average" to "Fantastic! The absolute pinnacle". The reactors I watch all liked it. Maybe you just need some better places to hang out on the internet! There are lots of positive fans, even ones like me who have been watching for over 50 years.

Wasn’t aware of Sam Malone’s take on karaoke, but all right. Why do I get the feeling that he and Larry David would have heated arguments about the topic? See... I haven’t seen Bridgerton, and I’ve been hearing that complaint about Nicola being “underused” and/or “wasted”. I have heard that in the newest season that she was a standout. What we got of her here, I thought was good, so I guess I wasn’t bothered, having no frame of reference. She crushed the speech, like you said. The being cognizant of the gears turning and the show shouting, “You will feel this!” yeah, well, that speech, both the speech itself, and Nicola selling it as she did, that part hit too personal a wound, that I just sidestepped the cognizance as I was sobbing a bit too hard. Same thing just from the audio when watching the reaction Jess had as I can’t work picture-in-picture to save my life. I hear what you’re saying about how the aforementioned cognizance, gears turning-wise, proved distracting. That has happened to me in the past. The Lord Voldemort thing of it all, I believe that was more, as I’ve read, tied to the elections. Namely, from what I understand, the BBC has to be cagey about politics in their shows during times of campaigns, so as not to show bias. Apparently, there was a thought that Sunak was going to hold out until the last possible date before letting the next general election take place, hence the decision to play safe rather than sorry, even though I believe the election ended up being held back in July. All that said, that is a separate thing from actually saying the word “covid”, so I do take your point. Nine years of Sunday School and I missed being shown most of the horrible religious-themed movies and specials. Got shown some stuff; none of it stood out as being unbearably horrible. Most of it was just middle of the road. One of the better ones is still The Prince of Egypt, and I saw that in theaters outside of Sunday School. Weeks leading up to Confirmation, I and others got shown the ending of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade of all things. Rather grateful that they never forced The Passion of the Christ on us. Maybe it is shown in Sunday School in the years hence, but I missed that one. In this scenario, as you observe, they do a good job of it here by not having it be about the subject at all until springing it in the closing moments. I did catch the year and had a “...Wait.” sort of reaction. The starting the mission totally subconsciously bit was good. As to this being Moffat’s swan song, I could see him coming back again. Far as I know, he’s not set to this upcoming season. I know Jess would be happy if he did return. Say he doesn’t and this is his swan song, I was satisfied by it. You say that you found it a very depressing note to go out on, ok. Here’s hoping the next season’s more to your liking. Curious if another major villain who hasn’t been seen in years will show up, even if Davies says that the season will be newcomer friendly. I’ll crack up if he makes that a habit.

Season 3 is pretty universally considered a big step down from the first two, but its big saving grace is Coughlin seizing the reins of her self-described first time playing an adult for all it's worth. Just seeing a plus-size woman be portrayed as openly sexual without ever being for laughs, including a full nude scene that she herself insisted on, I'm sure was a big help to a lot of people.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, most of anything about Bridgerton’s recent season that I’ve heard has singled Nicola out, and giving her significant praise. I also heard lots of praise given to, what you said, “a plus-size woman be portrayed as openly sexual without ever being for laughs, including a full nude scene that she herself insisted on”, I’ve been hearing a lot of positive responses to that, which that is good to hear. Small tidbits that I’ve caught about her character and the season’s storyline with said character, do indicate that I might have a favorable response to both her character and story if I ever do see the show. Be something to maybe look into, though I don’t know when I’d find the time given the busy upcoming tv schedule, plus work and other things.

My first thought when I saw that there was a dinosaur in this episode: Sesska's going to *love* this one!
