Notice how the regeneration effect is starting when the Doctor says "I'm not going to let you stop me." He's actually talking to his future self. This is a very popular choice for the best regeneration story of the classic series, and a lot of people even call it the best story period. The one real down note is the highly distracting view of Peri's cleavage at the end, which the director has apologized for numerous times and insists wasn't deliberate.

"I owe it to my friend to try because I got her into this. So you see, I'm not going to let you stop me now!", The Doctor, "The Caves of Androzani" That is a really great episode cliffhanger line - wow, wow, wow! "The execution was a hoax. The General is obtuse, but he is a loyal Government servant. He would not have deceived me unless ... unless his orders came from a higher authority.", Morgus (aside), "The Caves of Androzani" This theatrical Shakespearian soliloquy mode of Morgus is weird - and unnerving. Talking directly to sesskasays??? You really shouldn't be able to do this on TV ... but it works for me. "Oh, and Krau Timmin? Have the lift maintenance engineer shot.", Morgus, "The Caves of Androzani" Wow, what a piece of garbage Morgus is! I hope has a really nasty death. "Who is this foul slanderer?", "Me.", Morgus and Timmin, "The Caves of Androzani" Where have we seen this delicious style of executive betrayal before? - my mind goes to Goddard in "Dalek" - "Henry van Statten will be a homeless, brainless junkie living on the streets of San Diego, Seattle, Sacramento. Some place beginning with S." "What was it you always told me, Doctor? Brave heart? You'll survive, Doctor.", Tegan, "The Caves of Androzani" As I quoted every time the Doctor said it, it only seems right that I highlight the quote again when Tegan says it back to the Doctor. We love those companion callbacks in the final scene. And of course, we note that scene in "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot" which mirrors this one. "What's happened?", "Change, my dear. And it seems not a moment too soon.", Peri and the Sixth Doctor, "The Caves of Androzani" Among all the immediate regeneration changes that we've seen so far in Classic and New Who, this line seems to demonstrate your regeneration-as-reaction-to-previous-Doctor concept most closely - or at least this is the line that I recall when you mention it. "Too late, Peri. Going soon. Time to say goodbye.", The Doctor, "The Caves of Androzani" Peter Davison has been fantastic in the role. And also his legacy with his post-role work with episode commentaries / conventions / audio stories / "The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot" etc. - just great! The 5th Doctor is ranked in my top three Doctors - although my exact three differs from yours.

You especially living for the Doctor’s sass does help keep the spirit afloat when one is going through some shit, so that’s most appreciated. They were quite aggressive with Peri, yeah, it was odd. And yes, the whole holding someone against their will because you’re obsessed with them, not a good look. Rather enjoy you calling out the guy talking to you and trying to rope you into his shenanigans. I’d talk more about the story, but one, I’m presently doing quite poorly. And two, discussion gets overshadowed by Five’s hour ending as the clock now strikes Six. I was curious if you were aware/suspecting that you were coming to the end of Five’s run. Seeing your reaction proves that you managed to go into this unspoiled it cracked the heart seeing, as you noted, that moment in your reaction where the penny dropped when the realization hit that you would lose him. Your eyes said it all, Jess. The heart then shattered seeing your reaction to when the regeneration occurred. I’m again reminded of how I was too spoiled with Twelve’s exit of going into the season knowing it would be his last, the season organically building to the end, his final three-parter being such the perfect most emotionally satisfying send-off. And ultimately, how they gave me exactly the regeneration I needed for Twelve. Here, yeah, Five does get a strong swan song for final bow. Now to talk about your updated ranking of your Doctors. I reiterate that in my own ranking, Five is surprisingly on the lower end of the ranking of Doctors for me. Not even entirely sure as to why beyond simply that’s just how it ended up. And I was curious how your reception of Five would be. It is very lovely, I must say, that now Five completes your trifecta of your Doctors behind your honey that is Eleven, and Twelve. Like you said, you don’t wish to disrespect One. You could always do something of a tie like I have. I have Twelve and Eleven as my top two, and I have One at third, albeit roughly tied for third with the War Doctor as I just loved him so much. Addressing your one comment, yes, it is very you to have your favorite Doctor of both eras to be the Doctor immediately following the Doctor that is the most popular pick for people’s favorite Doctor of the respective eras. Sort of like how I subvert tradition as the first three Doctors are my favorites of the classic era, and again, Twelve is my Doctor of the revival era, and he’s my Doctor overall. It’s always lovely to see you really love and invest in a Doctor, and I’m glad that Five was one where your love showed very brightly. Hope you had a good cry after the reaction. Thank you for the very emotional reaction, Jess.

In terms of best regeneration altogether, my bias is toward Twelve’s. I cannot be impartial, particularly after his final stretch leading up to the regeneration gave me exactly what I needed and allowed me to much more easily say goodbye to my Doctor. I was terrified that I’d have a reaction like I keep having towards the Penguin’s death in Batman Returns. Instead, the reaction was very similar to the reaction Jess had to Twelve’s regeneration. Me and her were quite simpatico, reaction-wise, on that one. Five did have one that, yes, objectively would be up there quite high.

I adore Peter Davison's description of the scene as the Doctor's rock bottom: "All your old friends show up to annoy you, the Master screams at you, and worst of all, you turn into Colin Baker."

Paul Hayes

As always, a fascinating and hugely enjoyable reaction to a great story. It's also particularly interesting for me personally to contrast with my own memories of seeing the story for the first time. It was the first regeneration I ever saw, when the BBC ran it during a series of repeats in 1993 when I was nine years old. Like you I was taken completely by surprise, but I was hugely excited - seeing a regeneration felt like a rare and special moment, getting a glimpse of something mythic. I remember running through to the kitchen to breathlessly exclaim to mum "He changed! He changed!", unable to believe I'd been able to witness it.

Jess I've always been concerned about you having to sit through 35 years of classic Who and it being a somewhat arduous journey! (Even as a Whovian I consider many of the stories to be not great). So it gives me enormous pleasure to see that you get such enjoyment out of things (like 5th Doctor) as you approach the latter stages of this TV marathon. I can't believe we only have one more year left!
