Is it too early to call this episode your favorite episode of the season? Possibly. Would you be incorrect in such a presumption? No, I don’t think so. I accept your judgment that you don’t need to see the rest of the season. I did figure that you would love everything about the episode, creepy hand notwithstanding. Lovely to hear that this was first on a busy day of filming, thus you start with a high note. One slight downside on my end with this episode is that I just wanted to focus solely on the Bobby and Rufus half of the episode, and that’s such a minor complaint in the grand scheme. Seeing Jim’s name, made me bemoan that they couldn’t keep that secret, but your scream of joy makes up for it. Lovely to see Bobby. Lovely to see Steven back as Rufus once more. They had the strong parallels of the two duos working the same case. When Sam and Dean had their aliases, takes a second, you note, “As in Paul and Michael?”, and you get the reference, though amusingly the closed captions misspelled the names, indicating that the reference was lost on them. The flipside is you got the good laugh at the Lethal Weapon theme with the names that Bobby and Rufus had. You commented finding the soul eaters especially terrifying, which, well, considering the description feels very Dementors by way of Schrodinger, I’d say the fear is perfectly warranted. You also mention how you didn’t think that the wallpaper looked that bad, yeah, well, my mom loathes wallpaper, my dad held a similar sentiment, so I think they’d have not abided by the moral of the story which you imparted. As you note, it’s great seeing Bobby and Rufus working together. Or, well, mostly Bobby does the work as Rufus is Shomer Shabbos. Though that gets such a laugh when Bobby notes the sun set, and Rufus has that perfect, “...Yeah, ya got me there.” look. Would have loved more conversation between them, say reminiscing about old cases. Bobby could say something about some demon who listed his address as Wrigley Field, and how funny it was, to which Rufus would undoubtedly say, “Yeah. REAL cute.” The big conversation they do have is great, and you feel Bobby’s fear of, as Rufus says, the oldest rule of hunting. Even so, Bobby worries about his boys, which gets us both. Knew that when Bobby said he was worried about his boys, when Rufus questioned, “YOUR boys?” you would join Bobby in shooting Rufus the mother of all death glares. To Rufus’s credit, he registers you and Bobby shooting daggers at him and has that perfect, “You’re right. I crossed a line. I retract that remark.” response. And I wholeheartedly second how you said, “YES.” when siding with Bobby on Sam and Dean being his boys. Related to that, love how the episode establishes when it took place in the past without using any timestamps. Between the mentions of the apocalypse, Lilith being mentioned, and the one lady mentioning about the market crashing when putting the house up for sale, there’s the trust in the audience to do the math on that. Fantastic research montage. Love Willie Nelson. Your own response to said montage being great. Struck a nerve when the soul eater makes Bobby sees his boys dead. I yelled, “Oh, THAT’S dirty pool!” They all four did the work. Steven is amazing in his scenes of Rufus facing Bobby possessed. Likewise, the fight between Sam and possessed Dean, Sam rather soundly has the advantage, which makes sense. The soul eater may control Dean’s body. But it possesses none of his skill. And they win the day, and it REALLY gets us both in the heart when the payoff of the nest being outside of time and space pays off. Dean getting to see his dad again, makes us both cry. All in all, a very superb episode of this show, that you have now reacted to it so perfectly, Jess, thank you so much.
