Apparently Yesterday's Enterprise was such a budget hog that they needed two bottle episodes to cover for it, and here's the second. And unlike The Offspring, there really isn't that much to dig into with this one. It's just a neat sci-fi story that's told well, without anything really digging into these characters or building to a big emotional scene. Winrich Kolbe did end up calling it his favorite of the ones he directed, citing how it's just wall to wall Patrick Stewart getting to do his thing, and sometimes that's enough. I also really like how the fake Picard screws up in a way that's totally understandable coming from someone who doesn't actually know him, rather than making the villains look like idiots. Now to look ahead to next week where...oh.

Thomas Corp

That’s true. You can’t say that you weren’t entertained by this episode. It is quite nightmarish in spots. Considering past Star Trek reactions, namely your reactions to Metamorphosis and The Empath from the original series, combined with your claustrophobia, statement’s concerning lack of freeedom and/or consent, I did figure you’d have more or less the response that you had to this. It would be terrifying to just wake up in some strange place, and though it is spacious, the lack of escape and freedom would be triggering, as you said it was for you. Well, that, and you held the priority of food. I had clocked Picard and his fellow prisoners being monitored. To what end and purpose, that remained the mystery. One that takes a back seat to enjoying the dynamic Picard has with his fellow prisoners, such as the perennial Quisling, and the rather aggressive Esoqq. (Or was it, Love bug, as you called him?) You spoke very well about how Picard exhibits great leadership. Though so thoroughly done with the situation, he keeps his cool. And it’s great how once he caught the big clue, had the great imposter bluff, combined with deducing the single unifying thread amongst the group, he figures things out fast. Then there’s the trouble with, let us call him Fool’s Gold Picard. Massive credit to Patrick playing Fool’s Gold Picard as slightly off compared to Picard. You hit the nail right on the head, Jess, by observing how the crew figures things out. Initially, though odd, Fool’s Gold Picard’s requests and orders aren’t the MOST unusual things in the world, and he has built the reservoir of trust with the crew, which allows them to rationalize or excuse a few things at first. Credit to Marina for silently selling Deanna thinking, “What in holy hell is going on?” whilst not quite having the whole picture. Then when the Ten Forward revelry happens, that becomes too big a red flag to ignore. Aided by Geordi having the confused look, which is probably made more prominent given the song selection, so Geordi thinks, “Captain, what the fuck?”, I would imagine. I also liked how you got ready to pounce when it looked like Geordi would be criticized. You put yourself in the crew’s place, and you just would think, “Christ, is he dying or something?!” Then there is the Beverly of it all. We’re simpatico, Jess, on having the “Don’t FUCK with me, fellas!!” response when Fool’s Gold Picard initiates the date night with Beverly. Oh, yeah, on the surface, it is all so lovely, and you desperately wish it was real. Patrick and Gates being so amazing that you almost fool yourself that it is. But alas, you know this is hollow and false, and your reactions mirrored my reactions of really not appreciating the fucking with my feelings here, albeit I went into more of a murderous rage. It’s bad enough that the fashion goes uncommented on, as they had great looks. I yelled about that, “Their outfits are fabulous as fuck, and I’m so FUCKING FURIOUS that I can’t even appreciate THAT, ya JERKS!!!” Then when you see the look that Beverly has at the end of the scene, I snapped, and yelled, “All right, THAT TEARS IT!! Whoever’s behind all this, you will cease this chicanery post haste! Otherwise, I will find out where your lair is, I will head down there, and I will rain down an ungodly FUCKING firestorm upon you! You’re going to have to call the fucking Q Continuum and get a fucking BINDING resolution to keep me from FUCKING destroying you!! I am talking SCORCHED EARTH, MOTHERFUCKERS!!! I will MASSACRE you!!! I WILL FUCK YOU UP!!!!” Shame that Beverly didn’t do as you said you’d do and chug the glass of champagne on the way out. Your comment on that was the source of a good laugh. Love the group talk the crew had. Likewise, you and I loved when Riker conceded that he had no evidence that would hold up, but that he would cross that bridge when he came to it. And it is really great how he finally steps up when Fool’s Gold Picard puts the whole ship in danger. Jonathan tapped into that Xanatos energy there. Loved all your reactions to the crew there. Picard then comes back, and we both lived how they all silently worked. We’re both agreeable to Picard keeping the aliens locked up for longer than he did, though we did both love Picard’s talking to that he gave them. And how Picard makes it clear that if they pull this shit again, he can pay a visit to where they’re at, in thirty seconds they’ll be dead, and he’ll blow the place up and be home in time for corn flakes. One loves to see it. I do agree that mortification notwithstanding, once Picard reads the reports, he’s going to take a lot of pride in the crew. Then there’s the shared reaction to the last Picard and Beverly scene of the episode. One area of difference is that I got pissed off by the music, yelling, “What IS this comical music!? This is NOT funny!! PISS OFF with that SHIT!!” All in all, a hell of a reaction, Jess, thank you very much.

Just finished baking some bread, so what better than to sit down and watch some ST TNG with my fav reactor. What could be better?

Thomas Corp

Some nice freshly baked bread, and a Next Gen reaction from Jess. Talk about a real humdinger of a Saturday.

Thomas Corp

I had heard that this episode was a favorite of Winrich Kolbe, largely because you just get to see the legendary Sir Patrick Stewart be completely awesome with the magnificent acting. I can understand the sentiment. This whole thing was just too creepy, and the Beverly of it all, as Jess described it, got me OBSCENELY PISSED OFF, as detailed in my own comment. The mistake from the villains does really work as they make the false and fairly reasonable presumption as to how a captain would behave and act, yet such a presumption doesn’t wash when factoring in Picard’s character, and that’s what really tips the crew off.

Josef Schiltz

I couldn't help noticing that the Mizarian Philosopher's species seem to be in much the same vein as the Tivolians in Doctor Who's The God Complex and Before The Flood. "The most invaded planet in the galaxy! Our capital city has a sign saying, if you occupied us, you'd be home by now."

Thomas Corp

Yeah, they do seem similar to the Tivolians, now you mention it, yeah.

Josef Schiltz

Eerily so! One would almost think they were cousin species! I think that the Tivolians were inspired by this episode. They are far too similar not to be!

Thomas Corp

It would not surprise me if they were, particularly as yes, they could be cousins.

Josef Schiltz

Incidentally, tracking back to your hands as a subject, I take it that you've been checked for Raynaud's? - which a friend of mine who is a retired builder has which was caused by continual stresses to his hands and fingers from using machine tools.

Ryan

Pretty indistinguishable from Cruise yelling at the Dead Reckoning crew members breaking COVID protocol, really. One thing that occurred to me watching the fake Picard is that this is more taking the piss out of Turnabout Intruder, showing how that kind of story can be done without making anyone stupid as the only way it won't wrap up in five minutes.

Thomas Corp

I believe that was looked into when I saw the dermatologist, yes. Don’t seem to have that, though it sounds awful.

Josef Schiltz

Signs would include discolouration - the tips go a bluey white and cold - and the skin pressed upon stays dented. Worse and painful in cold weather and - of course - more prone to injury and not healing properly due to poor circulation.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, none of that. My hands chap, and they split open at spots, namely around the joints and knuckles. Tends to flare up in colder weather, though it can get pretty bad during the summer months as well.

Josef Schiltz

Look up foods containing Quercetin. Because of my Ichthyosis' potential at worsening during cold weather, I always make sure I have a good amount of Quercetin containing foods to hand. - No pun intended - to ensure faster wound healing or prevention. Any to increase the sub-dermal circulation.

The Mizarians are basically the Tivolian from Doctor Who when you think about it. I wonder if this is where Steven Moffat got the idea for the Tivolian from. The song that the fake Picard sings in Ten Forward is called Heart of Oak. It was written in 1759 to celebrate several significant British battles at sea. It's the official march of the Royal Navy. I remember having to learn to sing it once for a school trip to HMS Calliope in Gateshead. I always find myself listening to the full version of Heart of Oak on YouTube after watching this episode. Get's the patriotic blood pumping. The unknown, telepathic aliens from this story always fascinate me everytime I rewatch this episode. They could cause so much havoc with their abilities if they really wanted to. They could easily take the shape of a Romulan like Tomalak and start a war between the Federation and Romulan Star Empire. I'm aware there is a story kind of similar to that concept in DS9 but that is my least favourite Star Trek show, so I've not seen the vast majority of it. I'm looking forward to seeing what you think of the next episode. It's one of those 50/50 episodes where some people like it and some people hate it. Interested to see which side of the fence you'll be on after your reaction Jess.
