Am I doing ok? Well, the week isn’t the best, but I’m getting through it well, oh, you mean the episode, yeah, shared sentiment on the being not ok. Reiterating that this episode is as far as I’ve gotten in the season. Briefly talking about the boat search. Sucks for Gi-hun when he discovers the tracker is gone, though I loved the Vertigo effect. You and I anticipated that they would check for that. They probably even searched his drawers. Smart move if they did. Reason being that most pat downs fail to uncover anything hidden there as even the most hardened killers are often reluctant to feel another man’s groin. In-ho would likely be wise to most forms of trickery and had the men not take any chances, leading Jun-ho and his group to be chasing geese of the wild, as you put it. Quite sweet when Woo-seok got upset, showing just how much he’s invested in taking the villains down. They do a really good job of Gi-hun waking up to his old trauma, as he is again amongst the four hundred and fifty-six players. Another year of four hundred and fifty-six players, exactly four hundred and fifty-six players. What’s the significance of that, I wonder? Now is where I confess that I got stuck knowing that Gi-hun was going to be back in the games. I did not see any trailers, but images of Gi-hun back in the uniform were nigh impossible to avoid. There are memes aplenty already with the new mugshot from Gi-hun. Largely, they’ve shown up amongst football fans, so I got spoiled there of all places. Bastards. Seeing Gi-hun’s buddy was a shared reaction. The moments you express the familiarity of episodes past, I sound like George Lucas, saying, “And again, it’s like poetry, it’s sort of, they rhyme. Every stanza kind of rhymes with the last one. ...Hopefully, it’ll work.” We do have a healthy showcase for some of the players. Not caught too many names yet, though I am trying to pay attention to that. Unable to confirm if you got the youtube crypto fucker’s name right. Loving the mother and son duo. Knew you were going to have a “MA!” type of reaction to that. I got in on it, myself. Sounded a lot like Brad Garrett when doing so. Already annoyed by the rapper, and I’m yelling, “I know Thanos. Thanos is a friend of mine. And you, sir, are NO Thanos.” Someone drop this fool, please. He did show good timing with the pill; I’ll give him points for that. Bringing us to one of the big highlights of the reaction. Your reactions to Gi-hun trying to prevent anyone from dying. Yeah, it gets you seeing him putting in way more effort to save the people than he did trying to get Osha to be his Padawan learner, that’s an accomplishment in and of itself. It would have been nice if everyone lived. That damn bee. See, I know that with bees that you don’t move, they’ll leave you alone. But the bee bitch, as you called it, combined with the high stress, shit went bad. Haven’t seen the first season in almost three years, but as I recall, they lose two hundred and fifty-five people then, compared to the ninety-one people killed here. So, Gi-hun did good. It was especially impressive when he and the trans woman, I believe her name is Hyun-ju, tried their best to save the one guy. Shame that No-eul still killed him, showing her to be quite ruthless, though she did have a reaction to the dad, loved your own reaction to that. See how that plays out. She has our attention. Going back to Hyun-ju, I have gotten word of controversy surrounding the character, more specifically, a headline I got stuck seeing was that there is the backlash of she is played by a cisgender male actor rather than an actual trans actress. I have not looked into the matter for fear of spoilers, so I can’t comment much at this time. I will say that I rather liked you encouraging the mom to take a nap when she started sounding a little too much like J. K. Rowling. Then we have the vote. The pieces of flair on the uniform is a new twist on things, yes. And again, Gi-hun makes the valiant efforts, up to and including revealing he played the games the three years prior. Interesting to see the differing reactions from the players. You say you would be against continuing if even one person was opposed to the idea, especially if your mom is there. Even with the players advocating just letting the games continue as everyone else in the games is not important, you’d yell, “Damn it, man, you’re talking about my MOTHER!!” I believe that even if you were in dire circumstances, you would hold to that, as you are that pure and kind a soul. I know it’s easier said than done, like how with shows like The Walking Dead. Made worse in my case as Alpha is my favorite character on that show. Samantha Morton being absurdly brilliant helps that. You maintain that belief that you would not be voting to keep playing, kept making me say, “Ah, God bless you, Jess.” They ultimately threaten Gi-hun. Problem is, they wouldn’t just kill him there outside of any of the games. They could have done that once he got knocked out in the limo, but that would have been ridiculously easy. Further proof is the mom makes the successful plea to her son after the threat is issued, and nothing happens to her. Leading to the big final scene of In-ho infiltrating the game as player 001, and casting the deciding vote, leading to your very memorable reaction. You know you’re particularly angry when you start sounding like Joe Pesci in the language department. They keep this up, you’ll reach Marisa Tomei levels, language-wise, where even Joe himself even has the line, “What IS it with you and that mouth!?” Now I sound like Joe or Peter Capaldi in the language department myself. My statement is not a criticism, merely an observation. And I support you having the sailor mouth if things keep going the way they do. Going back to In-ho with his chicanerous infiltration, I suspect that’s a recurring thing of someone planted in the games to allow this exact scenario to play out. Il-nam took the role in season one because he was dying anyway. Now In-ho is in the role. He’s definitely playing a sick game, and again, he could have had Gi-hun easily killed. That is not enough. He wants to break Gi-hun, I surmise anyway. Also, well, since you offered the speculation of the idea that one or any of the players introduced could be like In-ho is doing of infiltrating the games, and I don’t know one way or another, but since you spoke of that, I can give voice to something. I am puzzled: How did we have two separate occasions where the vote came down to one? The saying, “Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.” This is only twice, so still in the territory of coincidence, but highly improbable coincidence. My guard is up with suspecting people are working with In-ho. I don’t know, of course, as again, not seen the next episodes, but I am suspicious. I would not have even said anything if you hadn’t. Since you did, then we are thinking in a similar fashion. Christ, this reaction to Squid Game was most excellent. Thanks, Jess.

In Season 1, 255 people were eliminated in Red Light, Green Light. This time it was 91. So Gi-hun saved a lot of lives. Even without him there would have been some variation, so it might have been less than 255 anyway (equally could have been more) so it's hard to know how many to give him credit for but well over a hundred at least.

I haven't been shy about the season's first two episodes failing to grab me more often than not, but that still always had the caveat that we hadn't gotten to the actual games yet. As the big iconic part of the show and what got everyone on board in the first place, that was always going to be the real sign of how much gas was left in the tank. And now seeing the first one, I'll just quote someone who'd definitely get a big kick out of this whole setup: This was a triumph. I'm making a note here, huge success. While I hope at least some of the games are different this time (at the least, I have to imagine they got rid of the one where Gi-hun can get everyone through just by telling them to lick the shape out), it was definitely the right idea to start out doing Red Light Green Light again. Of all the iconic images (and Halloween costumes) the first season gave us, that doll is unquestionably the biggest of all, and just seeing it in the distance again is an instant "Oh FUCK" moment. Gi-hun immediately getting his friend behind him even before sharing that strategy (at first I thought it was weird he took so long to tell everyone, but then I figured its being so dependent on volunteers for the front spots made it more of a Hail Mary) was a real feels moment. Just getting new camera angles on the doll was a real rush, and even with the number of losses still being devastating, his keeping it to under a hundred very much feels like a win after how the last one went down. For having to introduce so many new characters in so short a time, plus a very neat fake-out in giving so much attention to the very first person killed, I'm impressed at how invested I am in them to either make it through or die horribly. Two of the players being public figures who a good deal of the others recognize is a very neat twist that offers all kinds of complications, and I'm hoping against hope the storyline of the trans player is handled right. As mentioned by others, the actor Park Sung-hoon is a cis man, and well before the season's release Hwang profusely apologized, saying he tried his hardest to find a real trans actress but it simply wasn't possible in South Korea, where being open about it will destroy your life even more than some other countries I could name, and he ultimately didn't feel comfortable putting someone through that. It's hardly the cut and dry situation some have tried to make it, and I'm keeping an open mind. It also helps that I was a huge fan of the K-drama The Glory (think The Count of Monte Cristo at an elementary school) where he plays one of the main villains, and it's a trip seeing him in such a different role where so far he's really doing good with it. Another very nice twist that people are now stuck publicly displaying which way they voted on ending the games and there's no hope of being forgotten. The In-ho reveal was one of your all-time best faces, and I'll just note we saw him unmasked during Red Light Green Light, meaning unlike Il-nam he didn't have the guts to play that one himself. We also get just a slight update on No-eul, and much like Jod in Skeleton Crew, it's much appreciated that the show so quickly dispenses with the idea that she's going to be some kind of token good guard. Instead she seems to mostly just be a look into the deeper logistics of how the games are pulled off, so that should provide some interesting stuff. I'm now looking forward to the rest way more than I was before, so that's always a nice feeling.

I can't wait to see what's going to make Gi-hun think "I'm fucked" during a Jaws zoom in the third episode of next season. They kind of have to do it now, right?

Thomas Corp

Rule of Three would be in play, so, yeah, they do kind of have to do it.

Thomas Corp

I honestly didn’t mind how it took until the third episode to get to the games. Largely because I applauded the show for not just diving into that, and that it was something different. Now we are back in the games, and they open with a hell of a start. We open with the familiar. They did a great job with the shots of the doll from a distance, and subsequently, the shots of Gi-hun silently conveying his terror and trauma. Hear you on the feels moment. Even with the significant loss of life, that is a good victory for Gi-hun, saving as many lives as possible. They do reasonably well with the looking price for our new set of main players. Whether you like all of them or not is a separate matter, but all of them are quite engaging characters. I still miss Mi-neyo. Public figures being part of the games is a new wrinkle. As I have not yet seen, past this episode, though I should be getting to the next one in a few hours, maybe tomorrow if not tonight, so couldn’t tell you how the plotline with the trans woman is handled, even if you wanted the spoilers. As mentioned, I didn’t look into the casting controversy for fear of spoilers. Reading the explanation that the creator gave that you detailed in your comment, that makes sense, then. I heard people were dealing in absolutes about it, and I was reserving judgment either way until I heard more pertinent information. Nice to hear that you are excited about the actor. The voting pieces of flair should prove interesting in the long run. The In-ho reveal did get a hell of a reaction from Jess. Her response is more than justified, especially as the dirty coward couldn’t even partake in the first game like Il-nam did. Sort of curious if they killed a guy who originally had the number. I also wonder if he planned to be in the games before or after the first game. I would wager after, given that he sees Gi-hun fight as hard as he did. He wants to break Gi-hun. I’m guessing. It is refreshing that like Jod, No-eul isn’t being portrayed as secretly noble. I do wonder with the focus on the inner workings of the staff that she will presumably provide a window into, like I think we will get with Jod, is there going to be some sort of backstory that offers explanation as to why she’s part of the staff that she’s used to justify the moral bankruptcy, and therefore will make her more unsympathetic. Both characters, I have an inkling that they are going to have the explain, not excuse story in their past. Like Tech said to Crosshair, “Understanding you does NOT mean I agree with you.” It has the potential to be really good here, so we should have a lot of fun. Nice to hear you’re now more excited to see what is to come with the season.

Ryan

Mostly I'm just cringing at what a pain it's going to be to navigate pronoun use between the actor and character.
