Well, Jess. Do you remember what your theory was about regenerations being the answer to something that happened to the previous one? This is the Doctor! What did you say, Jess? For better or worse?

Darren Seal

Oh dear it’s the twin dilemma how s21 can be so good and end with… this.

Ian Smith

Cheap production; silly looking monster; manic and potentially insane Doctor. Much for fans to deride here - and yet Colin Baker's interpretation of the Doctor as an unhinged force of nature carries the story along. Will be fascinating to see how Jess feels about him as his era progresses. He's...one of a kind!

You know, as awful as Six is in this, I have to admit he's extremely entertaining in a morbid kind of way.

John Nathan Turner (JNT) was the producer / showrunner at this point. He was a polarising individual, who tended to wear loud colours, be a little brash and had a mop of curly hair. Someone (it may have been Peter Davison at a convention - I forget) said JNT essentially cast himself as the Doctor when he cast Baker.

We've got Kevin McNally in this who comes back in new who as Jericho in the flux. But I met him a couple of years ago and he is a lovely man and such a good actor. As a kid I really didn't take to Colin in this story. Even for the 80s his coat was horrendous looking

Thanks for a great reaction. Well I certainly agree that this Doctors introduction packs a serious punch! It's a little like having a box of chocolates (5) & then eating a whole lemon (6)! I don't think there's ever been more of a contrast between 2 Doctors! Whenever I read articles talking about 6, that 'scene' is always mentioned. I think in my mind I tried to reconcile it as the after effects of the poison going through him from the last story, but I'm not convinced the writers were thinking the same thing. Aside from this being a Doctor intro story, I didn't really gel too much with the story itself but it does have some fairly intriguing parts to it, such as not knowing the reasons for the twins abduction and not knowing what is exactly behind it to start with. Still, 2 more parts to go. See you next time!

The Twin Dilemma is kind of universally known as a complete clanger but the fact that it was remembered for decades afterwards, albeit for the wrong reasons, is why I nonetheless respect it. As for the Doctor himself… well, he’s thought of as kind of like the 13 of Classic Who sooo… make of that what you will.

so in Real Life, we are just a handful of stories away from the Doctor Who Hiatus of 1985/6 this story I feel sparked the action of that decision. There were some very questionable story, character decisions made by JNT. Next season has some gems but all heading towards the first 'almost cancellation"

David Cole

Well, I thought this would be an interesting one and it was! Like having a bucket of cold water dumped on your head isn't it, in an (arguably) entertaining sort of way. Bear in mind also that this *ended* the season, so it was certainly a... bold introduction.

The Twin Dilemma is an undeniably rough start with perhaps the most abrupt shift in characterization between Doctors the series has ever shown. It does get somewhat better from here onwards, though many fans feel that the full potential of Six was only realized in the Big Finish audio dramas. At the time, though, these weren't available, but Doctor Who magazine did a fantastic job with their Sixth Doctor comic strip stories, even giving him a shapeshifting penguin as a companion!

Paul Mason

The Doctor being temporarily unhinged, dangerous and unpredictable post-regeneration is a great idea if they had pulled it off. I love that they tried and Colin Baker certainly gives it his all. BTW has anyone warned you about season 22 yet? The episodes are double length so all those two-parters are equivalent to 4-parters.

Josef Schiltz

Even better that they had an illustrator that had previously worked on the Sapphire and Steel strip in Look-in, Arthur Ranson, who did an excellent job and even had one story laid out in Rupert the Bear in the Daily Express Annual and newspaper strip style.

Steve McMullan

Ending the season by introducing an unlikable Doctor who is very difficult to look at and in a very bad story is a sure way to convince fans not to come back next season.

Rob Walters

This story is wonderful in that Colin is so hilarious throughout!! ("If it's a question of his life or mine, I certainly can!" , "Words spoken in the sickness of transition!") I can see how this briefly hubristic, slightly psychotic persona was jarring for people, but by the next story the Doctor is back to form, albeit more confident and hilariously funny. The Sixth Doctor is fantastic!!

Rob Walters

Only simpletons and imbeciles believe the Sixth Doctors era was excrement. He was wonderful and his stories, some of the best of the entire classic run.
