I love this episode!! No interplanetary space fleets out to annihilate one another, no "fire phasers!", no world shattering events. No BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Instead, we get a relatively quiet episode, a change of pace with little bits of subterfuge, a Ferengi's nose gets bopped, we have Picard and a little romantic tryst, some humour in getting Jean-Luc to go on the holiday in the first place, time travelling aliens and - even better - everyone lives! . . .and we get to find out Picard's preferred reading when on holiday. Didn't sound bad at all.

I have to start this by saying everything involving Risa has always annoyed me. The whole joke is supposed to be that it's where everyone goes for giant orgies but they'll never actually say that because this is supposedly a "family" show, even though there's really no reason Trek has to be that beyond the original show being from an era when that was the only thing you could put onscreen. So it all basically boils down to the Monty Python sketch with the guy who keeps elbowing people and asking if they get dirty jokes, and that has a very limited half life for me. And it's especially weird since just a couple years ago, the show seemed to have no problem telling the kids about certain unsavory parts of Tasha's childhood, and after this season has taken such big strides to genuinely thoughtful and mature storytelling, suddenly it's coming up with a big complicated word for sex and then laughing in the bushes. So it's a good thing this episode isn't much about Risa itself, and it's just the vehicle to introduce us to Vash. She immediately grabs your interest and it's no surprise she caught on with the fans like she did, and it's pretty nice to see an adventure couple, especially back then, where it's the man who you can see saying "I may not be an explorer, or an adventurer, or a treasure seeker, or a gunfighter, but I am proud of what I am. I am a librarian!" I don't even mind the especially wonky time travel logic, since that's clearly part of the joke. And it's especially impressive that she remains pretty popular even with the most rabid Picard/Beverly shippers, rather than getting a reputation like Diana Fowley or Karen Filipelli. And I also have to say your reaction made this the most I've ever liked the early parts of everyone forcing Picard on vacation, so thanks for that.

That was an episode, like you said. In terms of fan reception, I’ve heard varied responses to it, though I seriously doubt you have a Talons of Weng-Chiang type of deal to worry about, Jess. Personally: It’s not one of those episodes that I would rank last, though I would have liked to have loved it more than I did. Similar to what you said, nothing really bad about it. What hurts is that it follows several stand out episodes, that this one pales a bit by comparison. All of this kick started by everyone trying to make Picard take a damn vacation, which you quite got on board with. Not me, I was on Picard’s side of resisting the vacation. I felt so personally attacked by that too. How Beverly says Picard loathes going on vacation, that part I really can’t argue with. How she says once Picard is on vacation, he has a marvelous time, that varies. Last two occasions I went anywhere, it felt like how in Tales of the Walking Dead where Alpha gets told, “You’re so caught up in all the things that could go wrong that you can’t enjoy the good stuff.” which, that line also felt like a personal attack, as the lines here do, leading a man to yell, “Now that’s getting personal, show!” One nice part of the Picard and Beverly scene is the rather charged byplay that Picard and Beverly had helps wash the taste out of my mouth from last episode with the alien fuckery with the Beverly of it all. Do love how Picard practically shot daggers toward Deanna when she bluffed about her mom. Then there’s the whole thing with picking up the trinket was Riker’s way of helping Picard to get a little action. If were Picard, I’d be LIVID with Riker on that one. And Riker would probably justify it as being a gift or favor, and that after all, he’s not the kind of guy who would just get his captain a gift certificate or a pen knife or any of that other horseshit whilst on vacation. If he did say that, and I was Picard, I’d just deadpan, “I’d rather have a knife.” Glad you got a laugh out of Riker’s chicanery, even if you do concede that Riker was being Team Too Much, as you said. I also take exception to Riker criticizing Picard bringing the books with him. The book selections sounded most agreeable. Bit of light reading never hurts anybody. The book of Ethics and Sophistry in the Alternate Universe sounds quite amazing actually. Jesus, Picard is relatable in this scenario. Provides quite a contrast to Kirk who would likely plunge headfirst into this planet, bellowing, “LET’S FUUUUUUUUUUCK!! I’LL FUCK ANYTHING THAT MOOOVES!!!” Well, ok, maybe Kirk would not have been QUITE that bad. Don’t think he would have been too far from it, especially if one goes by how pop-culture tends to talk about Kirk. The bulk of this is Vash, which is where the plot thickens, as they say. (Why, by the way, is it a soup metaphor?) Vash herself isn’t bad, and Jennifer Hetrick is quite good. She just doesn’t get the best time to shine here, that I don’t begrudge you feeling cold by the plot of this. And I understand how you say you feel bad about saying that. As yeah, there are those occasions where something can be perfectly fine, it just doesn’t grab you for whatever reason. Also, you say how you feel about being annoyed that Picard couldn’t get his proper vacation in. Which, see, you’re encouraging Picard to go to the place where he can relax and be pampered, whereas I just hear that said to Picard, and say it sounds God fucking awful. And how you said that the crew’s pestering for the vacation is done out of “love”, not the word I’d use. I will say that on paper it is neat seeing in a plot where he feels like he’s in the Cary Grant style roles in To Catch a Thief and/or North by Northwest. Rather fitting therefore with the timing of this reaction as today is Cary’s birthday. The execution could have been done better here, I do concede your point on that. Especially as, yeah, there just isn’t much investment in Vash being after the artifact that she knows from her time with the scientist. The scientist, who from the sound of it, spent considerable time Waiting for Godot in trying to acquire this Tox Uthat. It reaches a point of annoyance when Vash was going on about it was lucky she and Picard crossed paths, and how she saved Picard from his boredom, and that a man like him needs excitement, in addition to loving your own reaction, my own comment was, “Really, Vash, this playing Brigid O’Shaughnessy act is growing tedious by the minute.” Love how Picard pulls the fast one on all parties involved, particularly how you, he, and I clocked Vash’s trickery. Picard even spells out how she seemed to sharp a woman to have been as careless as she seemed. Picard beats the aliens by showing how they time-turnered themselves, and now the aliens have the Groundhog Day loop to look forward to. But that’s another story. All in all, you say it’s an episode that although it’s not bad, it’s just one you didn’t care for all that much. I respect your honesty and reasoning. As it is in the past, the honesty is greatly valued, Jess, just as this reaction was greatly appreciated, as it was most wonderful, thank you.

I heard Roddenberry had a heavy hand in the Risa planet, and it shows. Curious if to land on the planet, do you first have to provide the password of “Fidelio”. Plenty of Eric Idle as Mr. Nudge-Nudge energy to this, yeah, and it is jarring compared to like you brought up about the show tackling Tasha’s past. I just get so DEEPLY upset with Riker trying to set Picard up. Now I appreciate that some people would go to these places for casual hook-ups. But one, don’t trick Picard into that. Two, if that’s what the man wanted to do, let him do it on his own terms. Three, the idea is NOT appealing, AT ALL. I don’t have any interest in casual hookups. I would rather find the woman you want to settle down with, and I haven’t found her yet, (or if I have, I don’t know it yet,) and this place is NOT the place to go looking for that. As to Vash, I mean, as I said, I would have liked a better showing here. The idea of the adventure couple itself is agreeable. Hard to top Indy and Marion though. Nice reversal where the man’s the one who takes the pride in being the librarian. God, I love Rachel Weisz. Time travel was a bit wonky in this one, true. Wouldn’t go so far as to call myself a “rabid” Picard/Beverly shipper. Passionate, sure. The episodes where either of them is in the romance/infatuation plots without the other, it does help that they are both good friends first and foremost, who value each other’s happiness, even if they were to be in a relationship with somebody else. So, my being a passionate Picard/Beverly shipper, I usually never have much a problem with that aspect of it all, provided it’s done well. Do agree though about Vash being a good character who avoids the shipper backlash. Never seen X-Files, so can’t offer anything there. I do defend Karen rather strongly as she was a great character. Then again, Jim was a complete asshole, and now I’m in my thirties, people call me a sellout with that. Never mind the fact that I thought he was a complete asshole when the show was airing first run back when I was in high school. The feeling has just gotten more pronounced as I get older. Nice to hear the reaction Jess had to the opening scenes was fun for you.

Picard bringing something to read whilst on vacation is me. The book Ethics and Sophistry in the Alternate Universe sounds amazing. I’d love to read it. Riker questions how Picard brings that and Ulysses along for light reading, made me snap a little at Riker, saying, “What’s wrong with that!?”

Ryan

I love saying that both stars of The Mummy are Oscar winners.

Mine might be 'Painting Music' by Paul Klee, 'Cultural Capital' by John Guillory and 'Edward James: A Surrealist Life' by John Lowe and 'Science: A Candle In The Dark' by Carl Sagan. I might throw in some Greek Comedies whilst I'm at it. Preferably those translated by David Barrett and Alan H. Sommerstein because I cast them in my mind with the members of Monty Python. Oh, and a sketchbook.

Thomas Corp

Those are all good. The Greek comedies sound particularly agreeable. That sounds great, what you said about casting the Python fellas. I seem to like switching it up every now and again with the variety. I know I’ve brought Sherlock Holmes on trips a few times. I do love Highsmith’s Rilpiad series. Shakespeare’s always a good go to, as are Poe, and le Carré.

Ryan

One of the novels shows that Anabasis (ie, the inspiration for The Warriors) is a big comfort reading for Picard.

Josef Schiltz

The 'Wordsworth' Shakespeares in paperback are a nice easy load if you want to take along single plays. Some of my stims are Shakespearean and I'll run through some under my breath if I am bored. Queues move faster I've found! "Oh, for a muse of fire . . " I have used for years. I've just seen a tribute to Jeremy Brett's Holmes on a YouTube channel and he is the definitive for me. We match up quite well in mannerisms as well. Damn lithium and the rheumatic fever he had as a child. I have his biography 'Bending The Willow'. I've often wondered if Jess has seen his Holmes. HAH! Aristophanes are particularly good with the Barrett translations imagined as Pythonesque and they were published when the Python team might have seen and read them as students.

Thomas Corp

Richard III is good for stims. So is most of Iago’s dialogue, namely I love his, “How then am I a villain?” soliloquy. Love the tributes and compilations of Jeremy Brett as Holmes on youtube. They’re great quick pick me ups. One small part that’s always great is Watson asking if he really did remarkably bad, Holmes briefly looks as if he’s contemplating the answer, before promptly saying, “Yes!” Someday, Jess does need to see him as Holmes, even if it doesn’t happen on camera, she needs to see the Granada series.

Josef Schiltz

I just love the casually dismissive way in which Holmes says, "oh, yes." Watson wounded! I would say that, were Jess to watch The Adventures Of Sherlock Holmes, then to avoid The Speckled Band.

Geordie Joe

This is easily one of the weakest episodes in season 3. I could tell during the reaction that you were losing interest as time went on. I was just thinking to myself "Yep, same here Jess" The opening act on the Enterprise is fun. Watching the crew trying to convince Picard to take a vacation, but once he beams down to Risa the episode falls off a cliff in quality. Then it becomes a tiresome find the MacGuffin episode with a weak plot and one dimensional characters. Riker's little practical joke on Picard with the Risian fertility symbol is probably the best part of the episode and that was just intended as a throwaway gag by the writers.

Thomas Corp

This one is on the weaker side for the season as a whole. Not one of the worst ones altogether, but given the track record of the season, it pales in comparison to what we’ve been getting this season. Can’t entirely say I find the opening “fun”, but that speaks more to my relating to Picard, just hating how everyone is pushing, poking, and prodding him to go on vacation. Objectively, the scenes are good, they just get under my skin. Took offense too how he posits the thought of going to the symposium, and how that idea isn’t met with a warm reception. Maybe for him, that’s great fun. Likewise, the business with the fertility symbol, if I were Picard, I’d say to Riker, “Yeah, Riker, we’re going to have a word. I get back, we’re going to have a serious word about that.”

Josef Schiltz

Rewatched this episode last night and I still really like it and I was waiting for this episode to come along. Casting about for a reason as to why this episode is getting such "meh!" All I can reason out is that there is no mayhem. It's a quiet episode, no space battles and explosions, no conspiracies, no phaser battles and everyone lives and Picard actually enjoys himself and doesn't have to yell "All hands! Brace for impact!" or some such drama. I like this one for the same reason that I like Family and Data's Day. We get a 'time off' Picard and he also gets to indulge his interest in archeology - albeit, it's time corridor archeology and this all adds another layer to a fascinating character. I get a feeling that you lot are playing 'Oliver'. Saying, "Please, sir? I want some more!" when there is a plate of rosy apples in a bowl right in front of you!

Thomas Corp

I have no problem with the absence of the mayhem, that part’s great with Star Trek. The quieter episodes are great. I’m with Jess in that nothing even in this was strictly speaking bad, just, for whatever reason, it didn’t grab me. I know I was completely on Picard’s side with resisting the vacation, and later, wanting to take the one object and bash Riker over the head with it. It feels like an episode that’s perfectly fine, just not one that ends up in either best, nor worst rankings for me. Maybe I am ignoring the nice rosy apples. But then again, I’m more partial to Granny Smith apples myself. Honestly really like that you like the episode a lot.

Tsuliwaensis

the episode might not have been the best (to me it's like Girl in the Fireplace all-over-again: what do you mean, you're just going to fall in love with someone else for an episode? 😐), but that doesn't mean that the reaction wasn't a hoot to watch. I very much enjoyed your commitment to Picard having a proper holiday and how fiercely you were defending him against the threat of plot, attacking his downtime from all sides. this was a thoroughly good time. 😊
