Not much of a surprise that the teams full of people we know all make it through, but it still manages some fun twists, including the most fun slapping scene since Tyrion to Joffrey. If the camera panned back to show a bunch of people lining up with different weapons, I'd totally buy it. Then we get to Gi-hun's team, where you can just feel In-ho fighting down the urge to say "Ain't I a stinker?" I imagine there was a bit of discussion over just where to put the gong-gi so they could film as much as they could pull off in a single take before having to switch to the insert shots of the expert's hand, and what we get is a blast. Aided a ton by the song and its petering out then coming back in, which from what I've read is a hugely cliched "inspirational sports montage" scoring in Korea. So just imagine the scene scored with We are the Champions, or even Hallelujah, to get an idea of the local audience's experience with it. Some real blood boiling during the whole voting sequence, and it's really diabolical how they're apparently now just mandatory after every game, combined with everyone displaying how they voted. A person is smart, people are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it. Though I do think Gi-hun could have had a bit more success if he shared that some of the games pit the players against each other so half will die no matter what. I have no idea what In-ho's up to setting himself up as a big voice for stopping, and my best guess is he's going to work this into a later argument that will tempt Gi-hun into agreeing the games have a good purpose. I really can't see that working, especially with only two episodes left to build it, but let's see where it goes. The big highlight for me was Geum-ja and Hyun-ju. I was dreading where this was going when Geum-ja started on the topic a couple episodes ago, and it's a big relief to see it's actually a case where there's no malice in it, just no idea how to broach a subject she's never encountered before, and now that she has a decent understanding she's totally fine with it. Though still in a way that makes you occasionally shout "Ma!", and I wouldn't be surprised if there's a Sylvia Noble-esque scene later where she's overly paranoid about saying something offensive. I've never heard of this Mingle game, and haven't watched any ahead, but from the conversations I gather a number is called out, and then that exact number of people have to get in one of the doors. That has way too much potential for messing up the division and ensuring not everyone will make it, so of course it shows up here. The next episode is shaping up to be the new Marbles, and I kind of don't want to keep going through it.

A lot going on in this episode, as you say. Good to hear you’re enjoying this season more than you were anticipating. I hear what you mean about thinking how it was going to go, and so far, I’m with you on this being a great time. Start by briefly talking about No-eul. She finds herself in a proverbial pickle with Isosceles and Equilateral being most irate with her over the disruptions she’s caused with the Burke and Hare racket. She doesn’t seem intimidated by the two, yet she seemed to not expect the reprisal. What did she think was going to happen? Curious to delve more deeply into her character. Following up with the game. The core four that we left off on, they did the work. Loved how it delighted you so. Hyun-ju coming through with the advice. Love how Geum-ja encourages Yong-sik to tap into his aggression, and how Yong-sik likewise encourages Geum-ja first by reminding his mom about how she used to play the game back during the Korean War under far more stressful circumstances, and then his encouragement with the, “Use your aggressive feelings, Ma! Let the hate flow through you!” mentality. Great how when the shaman lady falters, Hyun-ju slapped the SHIT out of her, you and I had the shared reaction there. Then Hyun-ju wins, and they all cross the finish line. Gi-hun and his team had a great showing too. They were all getting it in one go. The moment of Dae-ho being lightning fast was great to see it, and how it made you have the reaction that it had. Tellingly even In-ho had a “...Holy FUCK.” look on his face at that one, and I don’t think he was pretending on that one. The same cannot be said for his fuckery with using his non-dominant hand with the top. We were on the same page with reactions there. In my case: First you channel Kevin Kline, by yelling, “ASSHOOOOOLE!!!” Then when you were saying, “This. Mother. Fucker.” that matches about the energy I had of saying, “Goddamn son of a bitch!” during that scene. He was definitely doing it to fuck with the others. Don’t think he was entirely planning to come in clutch at the end, because as you observed, you can’t completely bank on that. That he did come in clutch is likely an added bonus. Leads to the vote where you realize that “One More Game!” is nowhere near as iconic as “One Way Out!” In-ho would likely be stuck voting x given it would be too difficult to explain otherwise. He also likely counted on people like the older gentleman convincing others. Said older gentleman, by the way, it seems that everyone has forgotten that they would need to die thrice over to cover his debt. Let alone the fact that for more money to be gained, people need to die. They set it up well with the players you would hope would vote x, instead vote o. Love, Jess, how you remind us what a kind and pure soul you are by reiterating how you would vote x. I was curious if Gi-hun would be allowed to vote if majority already ruled in favor of the games continuing. Respect is given that he still votes x, even after that, and after his buddy voted o. Said buddy and Gi-hun do have the touching scene where Gi-hun does sort of sound like his old self again. You surmise that In-ho is possibly trying to break Gi-hun. Alternatively, or perhaps additionally, he’s trying to corrupt Gi-hun into accepting that the people in the games deserve death like he’s kept going on about. That, as In-ho sees it, it’s just an infestation. Everywhere you look in fact, nothing but undeveloped, unevolved, barely conscious pond scum. Totally convinced of their own superiority as they scurry about their short. Pointless. Lives. He wants to break Gi-hun that way so that it validates his own delusions. And, and this is a surmise on my part, it destroys possibly any guilt or self-hatred that he has over how he, an officer of the law didn’t go to any lengths (that we know of,) to stop these games, whereas Gi-hun has. You spoke of the rapper fucker (did we ever get a name for him by the way?) and his wingman, who, likewise, haven’t caught a name, causing the crypto situation to boil over. Likely, yeah. Then there is the other main group. Park Sung-hoon delivers in the performance of Hyun-ju explaining how her family responded to her coming out. Namely how her parents had the reaction that they did. This is why sometimes people wait until after their parents have died before doing anything about that. Love how everyone is supportive. We both got plenty emotional during those scenes. You say how Hyun-ju is emerging as your favorite of the season. Me, Geum-ja is cementing herself as my favorite of the season. Kang Ae-shim, her actress, is emerging as the mvp of the season for me. And like how you say, once that feeling sinks in, you just feel the dread of the (presumably) horrific death. Worse is how like how you envisioned Artax as Rocco, I, likewise, am seeing quite a bit of my mom in Geum-ja, and I’m futilely trying to brace myself for the pain when she gets killed. If she gets killed. I don’t know. Not seen past this episode yet. I knew the bathroom scene would get you. I was worried for you as there was the fear that the scene could have been worse. It wasn’t worse, but we both had an emotional response to Geum-ja comforting Jun-hee. And again, Park Sung-hoon comes through with excellent silent acting as Hyun-ju observes that. As to what you talked about at the end. Sorry to hear you’ve been going through tough times, emotionally. That’s been me as well. First week of the year for the last few years is a BAD time for me. DEEP wounds connected to the beginning of the year. This year, not as much, which tells me scar tissue is forming over the wounds in question. In your case, I am sorry about the tough times, and it warms the heart to know that the support and comments have meant so much to you, Jess. Thank you for yet another terrific Squid Game reaction.

No-eul accusing them of breaking "the rules" is pretty rich. And begs the question, if the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule? Another of those times where we both made the same reference for totally different reasons, so that's always fun. And maybe speaks to the base similarities of this secret level of society with its own rules. From what I've been able to find, Kang Ae-shim actually hasn't been acting for that long, with her earliest credit being in 2006 and mostly in small-looking roles without their own name, just being another character's mother. She's also playing a good deal older than her real age here as someone who experienced the Korean War, being born in 1963. I'd definitely imagine living in the country ages you prematurely if this show is anything close to accurate.

The Chigurh logic is strong with this one, yes. The shared film references could be about the base similarities of this secret level of society with its own rules. That and I just love Vincent so goddamn much in that film; a seriously underrated villain, the Bug in the Edgar Suit is. Saw that Kang Ae-shim doesn’t have the most expansive filmography. She’s been great here. I also caught her age listed, I assume that’s partially pragmatic reasons as the youngest someone would be if they were children during the Korean War would be their late seventies.

Yeah, little suspense, yet still the twists and turns are there to keep the proceedings from being predictable and prosaic. That was indeed great when Hyun-ju demonstrated how with certain people, sometimes you have to slap them in the face just to get their attention. In-ho was most decidedly dethpicable with his fuckery. Heard that about the song being big in Korea. In terms of sports montages, I’ll take No Easy Way Out, Burning Heart, or really just the entirety of the Rocky IV soundtrack. They cranked up things, diabolical-wise, with the voting after every round. And the people are so confident about what they know. After the first game, everybody knows that with a past winner, it’ll be easy as pie. After the second game, everybody knows that with such simple games, the next games will be a breeze. Imagine what they’ll KNOW... tomorrow. There’s question of if Gi-hun did try the approach you suggested, how many people would have actually listened to him and not their hubris and greed. Assuming it’s not just some elaborate ruse to fuck with Gi-hun, I surmise likely you are correct in he is trying to eventually tie it into a sales pitch to Gi-hun to accept the games as good. You mention that you really can’t see that working, especially with the limited time left. It doesn’t have to work; the mentality only has to make sense to In-ho. Again, that idea seems likely as to what he’s playing at. Geum-ja and Hyun-ju were wonderful in this episode. Shared relief of how the plotline has progressed, without any malice. That sums it up, what you said of it’s a case where there is “just no idea how to broach a subject she’s never encountered before, and now that she has a decent understanding, she’s totally fine with it.” complete with the occasional “MA!” at a few spots. My mom’s had a similar experience like Geum-ja’s response, combined with the sort of Sylvia thing of worrying about saying the wrong thing, even with being completely supportive. I like how human the representation has been in that regard. Don’t recognize the mingle game either. Having not yet seen the following episode, the description sounds akin to a variation on high stakes musical chairs. The strong likelihood is that it’s the next marbles, and the dread is strong, yeah.

I'm so sorry to hear you're hurting. If there's anything I can do to help, you know where to find me.

One interesting thing about 001/In-ho is that if you watch carefully, all his bad throws of the top are with his right hand. The final one, where it succeeds, he uses his left. I also want to say that the woman who plays "mom" is one of the best actors in the show.

Marissa Nielsen

You do a wonderful job with these reactions and I wanted to thank you for how much work and heart you put into them. I think it's so lovely that even when you're hurting, you spare a moment to thank and share a light. I hope our light with these comments gets back to you and it makes everything a little brighter ✨️
