i was 13 when this one was on BBC1 and I was HORRIFIED! I remember feeling very shaken - as you are .. and unsure.. especially after the last story, top notch acting and adventure in the caves of androzani.... to THIS! Every regeneration takes a little getting used to - some more than others.

I think it was a mistake to make this the end of season 21 rather than opening season 22. Each new Doctor invites comparison with their predecessor just by the nature of regeneration, but going directly from Caves to this without giving the audience enough breathing space to come to terms with such an extreme change is jarring. I know a similar thing happened with the crossover from Hartnell to Troughton; but that had the benefit of happening early in season 4, giving the new Doctor time to settle in and the audience time to get to know him by the end. Here, the viewers went through a complete tonal/stylistic whiplash which stayed unaddressed for a whole nine months.

It actually was quite a good idea to have the finale story of a season introduce the new Doctor, the only issue was the direction they decided to take 6 in. If Castrovalva had ended S18 that would've been good since 5, while different to 4, isn't so completely the opposite that it's off-putting. But yeah, going with where they went with Sixie, which is bold for long term planning in this era, it was a terrible idea since the image of 6 strangling Peri would've been in everyone's minds in the wait for S22.
