My favourite part of this episode, even on top of the amazing performances and characterisations, is the line 'you'll never guess where (the amulet) has been this whole time'. Coupled with 'I should put this away' and it then appearing in Sam's pocket, that implies that Sam fished it out of the trash bin Dean dumped it in at the end of Dark Side of the Moon (the S5 Heaven episode), and has been carrying it around ever since, as an expression of faith in his brother and the world in general. 'Never give up' indeed. Makes that very bleak episode (the one which revealed that God was on Earth) less bleak in retrospect, thinking about Sam walking over and picking it up shortly after the cut to credits. I like to think Chuck's secret identity was planned from Season 5 onwards, given how in 5x4 he's become one of future Dean's inner circle.

I've been looking forward to your reaction to this episode ever since you made it to season eleven. This is one of my favorite episodes just because of Rob and Curtis' performance. Plus, Rob's performance (completed in one take) of "Fare thee Well," which is often requested at conventions because he sings it so wonderfully. Rob was actually told that he had been playing "God" all along by the show's creator, Eric Kripke, just before his final appearance in the season 5 finale "Swan Song." However, Eric told Rob to keep it a secret and let fans come up with their own theories, with the only hint being his disappearance in a flash of light. So, as far as we know, Eric had intended to hint at that all along (but was never going to outright reveal it, seeing as season 5 was originally intended to be the last season, and was Eric's final season as showrunner). Even as the show continued, they kept Chuck "off the table" because he was just too powerful and would have been too much of a 'hail mary' for Sam and Dean (which is also why they diminished Castiel's powers over the seasons).
