One thing I absolutely love about this season is the sheer grandness of it, that we really get to see especially in this episode. Most seasons, outside of the boys we really only have one or two really big, powerful characters (ie: Dick Roman, or Lucifer and Michael, or Godstiel and Raphael etc), but this season, and this episode alone, we have God, Amara, archangels, the Scribe of God, a Prophet of the Lord. The cosmic level playing field that Sam and Dean are playing on is just so phenomenally well done, you feel the magnitude of what they are up against. The threat level is the highest it has ever been, the consequences for what they are doing are just so much more impactful. You have monsters banding together out of fear, you have demons and angels banding together to try to deal with Amara, and then poor Sam and Dean being forced to work with people who have tortured them, killed them, abandoned them and hurt them in multitudes of ways. Especially for Sam. Sam's quiet strength and sacrifices this season is so deeply, beautifully, tragically written, and I feel like the characters kind of undervalue it, but what Sam is put through this season probably makes it (imo at least) his most traumatizing season (at least so far). Sam has had to go back to Hell, to a cage with Lucifer in it. He has had to watch Castiel, basically a brother to him, be possessed and then be attacked and assaulted by him when Lucifer touched his soul, he was almost killed by the werewolf Corbin, he was tricked and manipulated by Lucifer and Rowena, and then, this episode, he has to go out and rescue the archangel who tormented him for centuries in the cage. Not only does he willingly put aside his own trauma and past to go get Lucifer, because he is needed for the fight, but he then puts Lucifer into Baby (his home and sanctuary) and then brings him home to the bunker (again, his home and sanctuary). Just being in Lucifer's presence must be Hell for Sam, but he does it without hesitation and without any real acknowledgement. There isn't really anything flashy or big inherently about Sam's heroics this season, but for all the grandness of the season I think Sam's entire arc is just as powerful, about his selflessness, his sacrifice, his strength and courage, about keeping Team Free Will running, no matter what curveballs (like God showing up) are thrown at him, while Dean is more in the spotlight with dealing with Amara and their connection. Like you said, there is definitely a different feel to season 11 then the others, it is just so powerful, and deep. The characters, the arcs, the weaving of the story, is masterful. Jared and Jensen particularly just freaking killed it, but the entire interwoven depths of these characters, especially now that they are coming together and connecting and we get to start seeing the pay off of the story building earlier in the season, its playing out just beautifully. Season 11 has always been my favorite, so I know i am biased but I am excited to see your reactions to the penultimate and finale, because it just really is the icing on a flawless cake. To me this was a perfect season, start to finish, and now that we are getting to the roots of the conflicts of the season, now that we have all the players on the board, brought together and ready to act, the theme of the season- sacrifice, family, and the underlying arch of nothing is really what it seems like, I really think you are going to be blown away by the conclusion
