Quite the roller-coaster ride of emotions that you went through with this episode. The result being a superb reaction, Jess. Start by talking about the opening that we had near identical responses to. I just had the thought of did this show just pull off an Up by way of Long, Long Time opening to this episode, if so, I’m not even mad, that’s amazing. Loved your assessment of the opening. Bulk of the talking points are centered around Oliver, and for good reason. The Incrediboy energy is strong with this one. It reaches fever pitch to the point where you say you need a drink even though it was early in the morning when you filmed. One, I reiterate that over eleven years of retail, that’s something of a common occurrence, so I am in zero position to talk or judge. Second, “Time is an illusion, lunchtime, doubly so.” so, you have the beer, tequila, wine, whatever the libation of choice would be in this scenario, and I’ll stand by that decision. It sends a bad look when he wants to go by the name of Kid-Omni-Man. You know it’s bad when for once, good old Art is stuck without a punchline. Nice to catch up with Art, and I loved your reaction to him. Shared appreciation of catching up with Amber, and that it is nice to see that she is happy. It was likewise good to see the Maulers again, though it looks like the last time. I now confess I got semi-spoiled on that. Given how Amazon released the first three episodes at once, (bastards) you saw thumbnails of either people uploading clips, or other reactors uploading their videos which had the spoilery images of Oliver caked in blood. So, I kind of knew this was coming. Still packs a punch though, which is something I am loving about this show: even when you get somewhat spoiled, it still hits hard. Certainly, you had a memorable reaction to that. I hope the Maulers aren’t completely dead. If they are out for the count, permanently: Damn it, what is the luck with the love to hate villains dying on us!? First we lose Metatron this week, now the Mauler Twins!? It really raises alarm bells when Oliver plays the “accident” card. Nice of Cecil to try to talk to the kid. It is also rather sweet too that Immortal tells Mark about the one Mauler surrendering first. Bad blood though there is, he still let Mark know about that. Leads to Mark and Debbie giving the boy a talking to. One cannot defy the Mama Boss that is Debbie, like you said. The woman is perfection, I concur. Speaking of Debbie, again, conflicting feelings on her dating Paul, now made more complicated by her shooting straight with Paul. To be fair to Mark, I’ve not gone through the experience of Mom dating someone new, Dad, likewise, never did it either, so Mark wins on that one. Mark does have a right to be upset about that, whilst Eve’s points about what Debbie did are valid. Shame my heart rate is jacked by this. They keep singing Paul’s praises, and I’m telling you, Cliff’s infamous past character rears his ugly head in my mind’s eye, combined with how this show is, and I’m half screaming, “STOP SAYING THAT!! You’ll encourage them!!” If this ends up being spoilery, I apologize. I am speaking to where we’re at now. If something of this nature does happen/it was in the comics, I do not know about it. Other highlights. Nice that Eve set the boundaries with her parents. And it’s nice that Rex and the team formerly known as the Teen Team are getting by. They do need a new name, though I liked your reactions to Rex’s egocentric names. Eventually he’ll suggest, “Captain Rex and the 501st!” to which we note. “That’s pretty good. But it’s taken.” His scenes with Rae are sweet. Then there’s the spy orb. First thought upon seeing it was, “That’s not Cecil. It’s too overt. He probably is still monitoring the family, just not with that.” One thing for sure, in addition to the stress about that, the final scene does verify that at the very least, Cecil is blameless there. Leads to massive stress for the next episode, which I stayed up to watch late last night. I know you filmed the reaction already, and even so, I promise you that I will not speak of the next episode until the reaction is up. Until then, thank you for the superb reaction, Jess.

I was a bit worried about whether this episode would continue the momentum the last one had built or slip back into the comparative water treading of the premiere. And that was all washed away during the opening sequence, a piece of capital letter Art on a level I typically just associate with The Bear these days. We don't see this kind of pure visual storytelling enough, and it was lovely to see it can still be pulled off so well. By the end I was fully invested in these two and very worried they'd end up dead, and might have gasped out loud when we hear dialogue. I'm reminded of how the opening of 28 Days Later was going to not have music, until they got concerned that the car alarm after so long of total silence might legit give people heart attacks. I was hoping we'd dig this deep into Oliver's feelings about life in general after his little "Why didn't you just kill Cecil?" moment, and Christian Colvery definitely lives up to the writing. I knew him from Cocaine Bear, a movie as magical and uncomplicated as it sounds, and he brings so much more out here. He's also in a show called Sweet Tooth, which I've never heard of but apparently it has kids with giant racks of antlers, so color me intrigued. The writing does such an amazing job imagining this kind of totally alien mindset that would come from his unique upbringing, and however morally repulsive what he's saying is, you can't help sympathizing with him as a little kid who's being forced to change everything he thought he knew about someone he idolized. And I say that as someone who kept defending Neil Gaiman for much longer than I should have, so I feel like I understand him more than maybe even was intended. At the same time, I have to point out that was an unnervingly long pause from Mark upon being asked if he ever thinks Nolan was right, and the story that he's apparently settled on to justify killing Levy is at best an extreme stretch of the word "accident." So I'm definitely keeping an eye there. Lovely to catch up with Amber and see she's doing okay after I was worried that Amazon just refused to shell out the cash to bring Zazie in this season. And Eve's continuing story shows way more growth than most people would probably be capable of. I also can't help noticing there seems to be an effort to stop using her less detailed middle distance model where her logo looks like the female symbol is just crossed out, which I imagine comes after a ton of confused reactions (the people at Pretty Much It, whose reactions I can't recommend enough, even wondered for a while if it meant she was trans). The Maulers have always been one of the show's consistently best pieces, and I dearly hope there's some extra clones somewhere because it would be a shame to lose them now. Oh, and I think I did recognize that voice at the end, but since you didn't have the thought I'll avoid possible spoilers for now.

The opening of Searching has actually replaced Up for me when describing this kind of sequence. I thought I was just getting a fun mystery movie, so to start out with that really leveled me. Don't say mean things about Fire Lord Ozai, Cliff's version was easily the nicest of the three. After some thinking of how to get through to someone with this kind of mindset, I'd probably at least give a shot to "You don't want to be like Karla Sofia Gascon, do you?"

Thomas Corp

Not seen Searching. Have to check that out. I’m not talking about Fire Lord Ozai. Good note with the Karla Sofia Gascon shot.

Ryan

I'm pretty sure I haven't seen whatever movie you're talking about, so on occasion I'll just randomly throw one out.

Yeah, shared appreciation for the opening of this one. Like I said, it felt like Up by way of Long, Long Time. Still behind on The Bear, though my brother’s been seeing it, and says I’d likely like it. Not familiar with the kid voicing Oliver, though my back hurts upon looking him up as I see he’s born the year I graduated high school. There is, as you say, the thing of sympathizing with him as a little kid who’s being forced to change everything he thought he knew about someone he idolized. Given what you’ve talked about your feelings on Gaiman, I can see how that would resonate with you some. There was a conspicuous pause from Mark after being asked about if he’s ever considered that Omni-Man was right. The whole Angstrom mess, that one it’s still hard to say was entirely wrong given the Debbie of it all, and the relatable feeling of a man seeing his mother hurt and near death, he would not think straight. Still wouldn’t say what he did was right, yet hard to fault why he did it. We will keep an eye on that. Fucked up what happened to the Maulers, which I sort of knew was coming due to the internet semi-spoiling that one, and I sort of knew by the time Jess posted the last reaction, so I had to keep quiet. You and me both on hoping that they have one or two back up clones. I was curious if we were ever going to see Amber again, so it was nice to catch up with her. Eve’s plotline continues to be intriguing. Hadn’t noticed about the logo. As to the voice. Let’s just say that it was not unfamiliar, and that it would be wise for people to not look at the credits at the end of the episode. (Didn’t check if the Amazon pop-up thing mentioned it or not, though they’re terrible with that.) Now to play the waiting game for the next reaction, and the season to come. Meantime, we have to look forward to more superhero fun this weekend with Captain America which already the critics are yelling about how we’re “supposed to hate it”. It’s like Quantummania all over again where the film’s not even out yet, and already you’re hearing the backlash and bile. The film DOES sound like it’s probable that it’s overstuffed a mite, so if that’s a criticism raised, I could understand that one. I’m already anticipating that it’s likely not balancing the multiple villains as expertly as Batman Returns did. I have tickets for it next week to see it with my one buddy, so we’ll see how it goes.

The Cliff Curtis situation, by the way, is actually spoilery for the film in question. The film stars Rena Owen and Temuera Morrison and it came out in 1994. Don’t think you can stream it, though it looks like it’s available to rent through Amazon and Apple. Fair warning, the film is a VERY tough watch. I also have not seen the Avatar shows, and I honestly am gleefully anticipating Fire Lord Ozai in the show as it’s Mark Hamill. Shit though the 2010 film was, Cliff was good in that.
