Oh blimey! The one saving grace regarding this one is Picard's sonnets.

Thomas Corp

Tis a bit of an endurance test at spots, yes. Seems that Jess had a similar opinion about the sonnets. The Wesley plotline was sweet too.

I was one of the half of fans who couldn't stand Lwaxana in the first two seasons, but I also go along with the crowd that this is where they finally figured out how to make her work. Mainly by sticking her against someone even more annoying. Her shenanigans are cheeky and fun, but Tog's shenanigans are cruel and tragic, which makes them not shenanigans at all, really. It's really something when you can be more repulsive than the Ferengi Neelix standing next to you. Majel is clearly thrilled to be playing this new side of her, and fully proves up to carrying the whole story. It's also a relief given the time period that at all times this is portrayed as a horrible thing to do and our sympathies are kept purely where they should be. Though I do agree there's a big tone issue along with that which one of the current Trek shows definitely wouldn't have done (instead they'd insult all the Jewish heritage that Leonard Nimoy brought to Spock for their comic relief; oh yeah, that's a thing that happened). Of course, the other big moment is Picard's Anguished Declaration of Love as TV Tropes puts it, which is all the funnier for coming after Stewart's deeply dramatic work last time. And it's marvelous that Frakes, Sirtis, and Dorn cracking up is still perfectly in character (well, maybe not Frakes glancing at a crew guy who was presumably also unable to stop laughing) and could all be kept in. Though the big irony is the moment of him stretching his hand out became the "What the hell is that" meme, a rare time when one of them is totally at odds with the actual context of the scene. By this time Wil Wheaton was beyond fed up with constantly being the fans' punching bag, which was apparently palpable even in those days where you couldn't just go online and rant after every episode. So you can see them laying potential groundwork for him leaving the show while still leaving room in case he decided to stick with it, which is all handled very well if also feeling a bit like padding in this particular episode. But you'll see where that ends up.

This is a forgettable filler episode with the best part being Wesley's field promotion to ensign at the end. Seeing him in a Starfleet uniform as Beverly and the rest of the bridge crew smile with pride is a great moment of character growth for Wesley. Unfortunately, that 2-minute scene right at the end isn't enough to salvage the rest of the episode. I just can't stand those creepy sex pest Ferengi. They are the most annoying aliens in Star Trek. I think that's one of the reasons why I didn't like Deep Space 9. That show has a few of them as recurring main characters, so there is literally no escaping them. I couldn't make it past season one of DS9. Only 2 weeks left now until your season 3 finale reaction. I'll be counting down the days until then. Haven't been this excited for a reaction of yours since The Five Doctors.

I’m with you, Jess, this one was tonally all over the place. My assessment of it is roughly the same as yours was. The presumed comedic intentions really do not work here as I was with you on having issues with the turn that it took. Starts out light enough, though still frustrating, with Deanna having the perfect “Someone please shoot me.” look during the scenes with Lwaxana. Figured you’d have the response to Lwaxana pressuring Deanna with the idea of getting married, when as you observe, and I agree, Deanna’s perfectly happy with her life. You had the calmer reaction to Lwaxana intruding on Deanna and Riker’s shore leave than I did. I let out a Brad Garrett style “MA!!” once or twice at that part. The scenes of Lwaxana’s attempts to play matchmaker make me realize how grateful I am that Dad never was pushy about that, and that so far Mom hasn’t sounded like the old Italian ladies in Marty pestering Ernest Borgnine as the title character by continuously asking, “Hey, Marty, when are you gonna get married?” all the time, nor has really anybody else in the family done that. (Although I am a little over a month away from being the age Marty is in that movie, so maybe I have that to look forward to in the years to come.) There’s likewise been practically zero pressure on my brother and I for grandkids. Probably because having kids, that’s just not in the cards for either my brother or me. Not without a miracle anyway. Lwaxana’s dress is wonderfully and ridiculously extravagant though, yes. Likewise, I knew you’d love Deanna and Riker’s outfits. I noted Riker’s shirt, saying, “Oh, I love that shade of blue.” Poor Mr. Homn getting left behind. Bringing us to the Ferengi of it all, and yeah, it’s really sickening. We already start on the wrong foot of Tog going after Lwaxana. We both had a look when Tog got too forward with Lwaxana, and we definitely had the shared reaction when he said that shit about “every female has their price.”, hearing that one made me roll my eyes and groan with a strong “Oh, for Chrissake.” energy. You called Tog “persistent”, that made me deadpan, “There’s another word for it.” Yeah, the whole coercion of it all, it is beyond uncomfortable how there is the air of humor with it. Especially when they shed the ladies of their dresses. The ladies being beamed over naked, yeah that one, you just go, “Oh, no. No, no! No, no, no!!” Anticipated your reaction would be about what it was. You really do feel so bad for Lwaxana being forced into being Tog’s consort to save Deanna. You raise the prediction of people arguing, “Well, she’s just playing along.”, even if that is true, it’s still mighty unpleasant. I lived for what you had to say on that, and I would have been seated and willing to hear the further words that you would have had to say on the matter. The Total Recall looking device, I hated that, certainly it was not fun seeing it disturb you. Good on Riker on getting the signal out. All of this interspersed with the Wesley plotline. Geordi and Data being such sweethearts, though I like how you note the flaw in the one argument in that Wesley’s not going to meet anyone like Geordi at the academy. My own wary comment to Geordi’s encouragement was that, “I don’t know. College was NOT good for me. Most of that being my own goddamn fault.” Likewise sweet how Picard and Beverly, his good old Mom and Dad, have the farewells to Wesley. But then Wesley solves the problem. Warms the heart. Wesley gets to save the day again. For old time’s sake. Leading us to one of the big saving graces of the episode. One that I concur that you’d love it more were it not for the earlier unpleasantness. It is objectively great how Lwaxana sets up the trickery, Deanna catches on and informs Picard about it, and although Picard initially has the “Oh, Merde.” response, he commits, and delivers with the recitations of the Bard’s sonnets, with a little Tennyson for seasoning. Patrick is so good, that it sounds like he’s getting the iambic pentameter slightly off on purpose. You also note when you see this episode for the first time, upon seeing the image from the memes, you say, “So THAT’S where this meme came from. I thought it was from a blooper or something.” Your face at that part was a picture, and it matched perfectly with the reactions of the crew, of which, Worf was particularly great with his silent, “...the hell?” response. Greater still is how once in the rhythm, Lwaxana and Picard ran with the ploy rather seamlessly. I had a laugh when Tog pleaded with Picard to have a bygones attitude, and Picard said, “I’ll think about it.” making me say, “He’ll think about it, Hahaha! Hear that, Tog? Picard’s a thinker. That’s terrific.” I do wholeheartedly share your disappointment of not having one last scene with mother and daughter following the horrific ordeal. Reinforcing the bond, and showing how much though Deanna is frustrated by her mom, she does love her mom. And just to see how the ordeal affected them, you would have loved to have seen a scene of Majel and Marina selling it so well. True, like you said, some of what you were wanting is conveyed in the episode, it’s just we would have liked the one last scene to send it all home. Instead, we do get the scene of Wesley getting the promotion from Picard, who sounded SO like such a proud dad. Loved your reaction to that scene, which both the scene itself, and your reaction to it was perfect, Jess. So, though certainly not an episode that either of us is listing as a favorite, it still yielded a terrific reaction, thank you. Hoping the weekend festivities have been lovely by the way.

The transport scene is saved a bit for me by how unbothered Lwaxana is about it. Which would later be improved on by the scene in Farscape where a guy tries to make Zhaan uncomfortable by flashing her, to which she just says "Is nudity a taboo in your culture?" and does it right back.

Thomas Corp

This episode is to Lwaxana what Déjà Q was to Q. Like you said, they shift the type of plotline the characters would get so that they don’t get stale. Shame though how Lwaxana, who’s shenanigans, yes, are cheeky and fun, is prisoner to Tog’s shenanigans which are indeed quite cruel and tragic. Which... makes them not shenanigans at all, really. Evil shenanigans they are. (“I swear to God I’ll PISTOL WHIP the next guy that says “shenanigans”!!) Credit to Majel for her performance. To your one point, true the episode is clear on that at all times this is portrayed as a horrible thing to do and our sympathies are kept purely where they should be, even if there is the shared issue with the tone. Reminds me of the one Becky episode of season seven of Supernatural how the plot is quite clear on Becky being in the wrong, yet there remains the air of zany comedy which is not good. Odd how Beetlejuice ages exceptionally well with this. Probably because the old Juice is that much of an overt and obnoxious sleaze of a creep that Michael played so well. Picard’s big moment is indeed a highlight. Good note on how the corpsing, Jonathan’s especially, works so well for the scene that they just left it in. Like I said, the “What the hell is THIS shit!?” meme template, I thought was from a blooper, then you see the episode, and yeah, the dissonance of it all is jarring as fuck. The Wesley plotline does well in laying the groundwork for his departure, and indeed, Wil is very good in this episode, though you still feel bad for him being considered the Jar Jar of the show, moreso when this was airing. One thing I’ve loved is how Jess has been very kind to Wesley. Similar to her response to Jake Lloyd as Anakin in Phantom Menace, it makes me just wish more people had her positivity back in the day.

Ryan

I'm reminded of the "Watching a comedy from 2004" sketch, where a guy quickly devolves into shock that any of it was ever considered okay, plus "Oh, I forgot Kevin Spacey plays the principal."

Carrot

Thank you so much for this reaction. I have always felt exactly the same way about this episode.

Josef Schiltz

Twelve: "That's IT! That's IT! Just ONE more person - JUST ONE MORE - says the word "shenanigans", I'll BELT them with my SHOE!! That's NOT even funny!! Now GET that BREAD PUDDING BRAIN word under control!!

Josef Schiltz

Twelfth Doctor: "Finally, It's my go." (really overplaying it) Myy love is as a FEVER, looonging STILL For that which longer NURSETH the disease, Feeding on that which doth preserve the ill, Th’ uncertain sickly appetite to PLEASE!. My reason, the physician to my love, !ANGRY! that his prescriptions are not kept, Hath . . . . . . left me, and I desperate now approve Desire is . . . (death), which physic did except. PAST cure I am, now rreason is past care, And frr-antic-mad with EVERMORE (unrest); My thoughts and my discourse as MADMEN'S are, At random from the truth vainly EX-pressed: For I have sworn thee fair, and thought thee bright, Who art as BLACK as hell, ( as dark . . . . . . as night.)" Nardole: "Ohhh dear. He's gone!" Twelfth Doctor: "Sorry. I've always wanted to see that done properly."

Thomas Corp

I think River would consider that foreplay, or at least the prelude to said foreplay.

Josef Schiltz

Ha! I couldn't help thinking of Twelve and River when Picard used this sonnet to 'woo' Lwaxana. It does fit them.
