Faction Paradox

I'd really like The Rani to return to the show. An antagonist who doesn't care about power, control, prejudice or revenge. She doesn't want to hurt anyone but also doesn't care if she does if it furthers her research.

Ryan

As you might imagine, there was a ton of speculation that the hand picking up the Master's ring way back when was the Rani, to the point that RTD even straight up says it's her in the commentary, though he gives a little laugh afterward to let us know it's just a joke (as he'd already publicly stated there was no intention behind it beyond giving another show runner an opening to bring the Master back if they wanted). And of course that came back now that we have another shot of a woman's hand picking up his tooth. Personally, I've never really cared if she comes back. I've never seen her as anything but a cheap ripoff of the Master, and now that we've actually gotten a female Master even that aspect is nullified.

Josef Schiltz

I always thought that Juliet Aubrey would make a great reincarnation of The Rani, but she got hijacked by Primeval first and in a very similar role. Sadly, of course, we've lost both Ant and Kate. How excellent they both were as The Master and The Rani. Previous to this, Kate O' Mara was a regular in Dynasty as Alexis Colby. She was also bust across the pond in another soap, this time for the BBC, in Triangle about a North Sea ferry, and in the late 80s, Howard's Way. Earlier in her career, she was in two Hammer horror films, The Vampire Lovers and The Horror Of Frankenstein. She made her stage debut in a 1963 production of The Merchant of Venice. On the DVD release of this story, she praised Ant for his pronunciation of the word 'exquisite', relishing it. Terence Alexander was a regular character, Charlie Hungerford, in the detective series Bergerac and that was the role he was best known for at the time and which starred John Nettles as Detective Sergeant Jim Bergerac. Louise Jameson also starred as his girlfriend, Susan Young. Btw; Jess. The dialogue you didn't catch was "I'm still a bit shook up. I need a toby before I can tell pit about attack." He's talking about needing a drink. Contextualizing also with the later dialogue in the bath house, "Hey, we're not last, grandma. T'others'll be along when they've emptied tobys." Toby being a popular ale. I'm pretty familiar with the location at Coalport in Shropshire as it isn't far from a cousin.

Ryan

Joan Collins was Alexis, Kate was her sister Caress Morell (reaching deep into the barrel for that one). Pretty much the same character, really. Also, another star of The Brothers was none other than Colin Baker, which I imagine played a role in her getting cast here.

Peter Wood

This one is my highlight of the season. Kind of overshadowed and overlooked, but it's always a lovely watch.

Josef Schiltz

Oh yes, of course! Kate was Caress! You're right. The characters were pretty much interchangeable! My excuse is that I wasn't really paying attention.

Josef Schiltz

Jess. It's an extraordinary realization that you've been doing these reactions for nearly ten years. Your reaction videos have helped me through some tremendously difficult times. 2016 was the year that my mother passed away. That was something of a turning point as I had been her sole caregiver for most of my adult life, she had early onset dementia, and I was, indeed, at something of a loss. The intervening years have been very complex yet, at the same time, seem so very short. Almost five minutes! I loved it when you said that Matt's Doctor had been such a soul reviver for you with your difficulties at the time. His Troughtonesque interpretation happens to be my favourite in recent years too, partnered with Amy and Rory of course. Rani is a feminine given Sanskrit name that means "queen" or "lady" in many Indo-Aryan languages. As for The Master's disguises. They really are getting more and more outlandishly eccentric.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, we are approaching ten years of Jess reacting to Doctor Who and other films and shows. First caught her videos around the end of 2017/beginning of 2018. It ended up being perfect timing as I had just said goodbye to Twelve, and through Jess, I got to experience the journey all over again. Joined up here around the time of the reaction to Heaven Sent. It was also fortuitous timing as 2018 was a particularly trying and difficult year for me. Jess was a big help; some reactions ended up being very well timed. She has continued to be a tremendous source of relief, comfort, and just joy when going through bad times. You mention the year of 2016 when you lost your mom, and how there was the turning point in which you were at something of a loss. That was 2021 for me. Dad having the accident where it was determined he needed to go to the hospital. And just when I begin to adjust to the idea of Dad being in the nursing home, his health took the plunge for the worst, died about the week and a half after that. Similar feelings of just being adrift after, in my case, seventeen years of being essentially primary caregiver, starting when I was thirteen. There’s like a block of that year that’s just a dark blur. Jess was beyond a godsend. Her Star Wars reactions at that time were particularly efficacious in keeping me afloat. Always great when Jess speaks of her love for Matt as Eleven, and how he was such a soul reviver for her. Would say he’s my Doctor, and indeed he is very, VERY close to it, were it not for Peter as Twelve. Already was predisposed to love him due to already loving Peter, and Deep Breath hadn’t even ended, and he was my Doctor. God, I miss the days of Twelve and Clara, and the days of Twelve, Bill, and Nardy. I would have loved a whole season of Twelve, River, and Nardy. When starting the reactions Jess had to Twelve, I already knew that he couldn’t surpass Eleven in her eyes. I was fine with that. Ended up being wonderful when he got about as close to it as any Doctor could get, which made me quote Emperor Palpatine, his famous line, “A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.” As to the Master, they need those eccentric disguises to match their eccentric performances.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, I caught the rumblings about the Rani getting brought back up when the tooth business happened. If they ever do bring her back, they bring her back. We did have the whole “Somehow, Sutekh returned.” shebang last year, so why not? Just hope they write it well. And hopefully, that there is no mysterious hooded woman ominously and dramatically pointing to any street signs going forward. In terms of how you say you saw the Rani as a sort of female Master, yeah, that aspect would get VASTLY overshadowed since Missy arrived.

Ryan

I'm sure the ability to bring her back despite Kate having passed away has its appeal. Maybe even regenerate her into a man, since the show has definitely done enough the other way to offset any implications of that. One idea that literally popped into my head just now is this how they could bring back Matthew Waterhouse, telling the Doctor "too bad Adric never got to be this age."

Owen Wildish

Another 6th Doctor favourite of mine, Missy, should have been the Rani, not the Master...

Ryan

I also have to note I may have been onto something that every Angela Bassett project needs a CNN reporter cameo, since Wolf shows up in Zero Day.

Glen McCulla

As someone born and raised in the North East of England, I'd like to both apologise for any incomprehensibility in the dialect, and protest at the way it's done by the actors in the episode. It's not geet accurate, like.

Glen McCulla

The Rani sassing the Master is life.

Josef Schiltz

Having rewatched Robot Of Sherwood just recently, I especially love that final scene between Robin and Twelve. "History is a burden. Stories can make us fly." . . . Ha ha!

Josef Schiltz

Btw: Loved it when Robin called Twelve a "bony rascal". It reminds me of The Doctor - Three - being called a "Long-shanked rascal with a mighty nose" I think that was in Time Warrior.

Rob Walters

'Toby' is a reference to the Toby jugs they would drink the beer out of, as indicated by Jack Ward's line, when he tells his mate (the blonde geezer with that headband), "Nah, man. I don't think I've the strength to lift a Toby.."

Rob Walters

Bringing the Rani back as a man, like you suggest, would be wonderful as it would exemplify the fact the regeneration does NOT alter sex. What proud Gallifreyan man would feel good, travelling the universe called 'Queen'.....?

Josef Schiltz

Yes. An aunt of mine had some in her collection. i saw them when we visited her in Knottingley back in the 70s. Also a lot of glassware from a local factory. A visit on a Saturday also made me miss Doctor Who. The last episode of Inferno, which was damned annoying!

Josef Schiltz

"I'm burnin' through the sky, yeah 200 degrees, that's why they call me Mister Fahrenheit I'm travelling at the speed of light!"

Alex Mann

I was hoping Ms Flood would be the Rani. 😅

Alex Mann

Would have also been a cool way to introduce Iris Wildthyme, but I’m sure we’ll get some obscure god, hopefully it’s at least a good story.

Faction Paradox

Agreed! I'm still hoping for the Black Guardian myself, but so long as it's some nasty villain I'll be happy. I mean she did talk about killing God, that's pretty metal

Thomas Corp

I’ll concede the possibility. Whether that is what’s going to happen remains to be seen of course, and I’m not committing to any concrete ideas or theories. But again, certainly possible she’s the Rani. If Davies does go down that path, I won’t say no to it.
