Ah season 12! I adore this season, and particularly the first two episodes. The premiere is fantastic, harsh as you said, and absolutely brutal for Sam, but, honestly, is it even a Supernatural premiere if Sam isn't suffering somehow? What i love about this episode is that it is very Sam-centric, but we get to see a side of Sam that we usually don't. The majority of the time we see Sam, he is quiet, and kind, and soft-spoken. He's the diplomat, the researcher, the more calm brother of the two Winchesters, in that he is more likely to think his way out of a problem, or talk it through, or try to de-escalate a situation to get control of it. But here, this episode does a really, really good job of reminding us that Sam is a soldier. He is a battle-hardened, experienced, deadly hunter, who is quick, clever, and able to perform exceedingly well under deadly, high-intensity situations that honestly are probably extremely triggering for him at the same time. Being locked up and tortured would mess anyone up, but for Sam especially, after the Cage this is something out of his worst nightmares, to be in a situation like this again. Add in to that mess that Sam still thinks Dean is dead, he thinks Cas is blown to places unknown, and nobody is coming after him. He is grieving, he's scared, he's pissed and he is just coming off preventing another Apocalypse, so he is probably exhausted, starving and utterly drained. But Sam puts all of that aside, he buries everything and shows a calm, stoic face to his tormentors. He is probably the sassiest he has been since he was soulless this episode, completely flippant and uncaring (very, very much a Dean thing to do, and isn't that just heartbreaking, Sam emulating his "dead" brother to try and get the strength to get through this horrible mess), he endures absolutely brutal punishments without a hint of cracking, and he still makes a plan and almost perfectly executes it to escape, while having both legs incapacitated, his mind swimming with hallucinogens and his body very much in shock from the water, the tasers and the burns and bullet wound. If he was even slightly less injured, or had slightly less of a moral compass about killing humans, he would have gotten himself out of there. This episode really does a phenomenal job of showcasing that as mild-mannered as Sammy chooses to be, when he has to be he is a complete badass, and incredibly formidable. There is a reason the BMOL has to restrain him and incapacitate his legs to keep him down. Plus, fun little trivia, Jared had to film the waterboarding and foot flambaying scenes on his birthday, so for him to do such horrifying scenes on a day like that, and deliver this strong of a performance? Just phenomenal. And then, while Sam is the focus of this episode, everything going on with Mary, Dean and Cas is so well done as well. I love how aggressive Cas is in this episode, because we never really get to see his protective side come out, especially for Sam, but when it does, Misha does a really, really great job of reminding us that Cas is an Angel of the Lord, he isn't just another "one of the guys", he is powerful, and old, and incredibly strong, and Sam is his family. And, my heart just breaks for Cas because while you can feel his anger for the people who took and hurt Sam, part of that anger is also his own guilt. The last thing Dean requested of him was to watch out for Sam, and within hours of Dean's "death", Sam gets taken. Even with Dean not actually dead, you know Cas feels like he failed, and he is going to fix that, no matter who or what gets in his way. Cas wanting to save Sam, willing to hurt others who hurt him, is just so heartwarming to see considering their first meeting where Sam was just "the boy with the demon blood." And then, everything with Dean and Mary... the history there, the emotions, the confusion all under the emergency of trying to find and rescue Sam, is so complex, and so beautifully laid out. Watching Dean trying to help Mary adjust to this new reality, watching how Mary is so conflicted, so confused about her children, the world they are in, the roles they all play, being forced back into hunting so soon after her resurrection... it's just so good to watch. I really can't wait to see how you enjoy the rest of the season
