OMG I'm so excited!

Ryan

I’m more terrified, considering a certain thing that happens here.

DieWinterkirsche

Oh, Jess... When I saw THAT thing I thought "Yep, Jess will bawl her eyes out" AND when you said in the pre-reaction-part that you held a grudge, I was like "Yeah... WELL, about that..." xD

Thomas Corp

I would advise, Jenny, not looking at the comments until after you see the episode. I do hope that you enjoy the episode and the reaction that Jess had when you have the chance to see both.

I quite appreciated the longer intro that you had, Jess, as it shows the pure excitement and enthusiasm to return to Daredevil. I have been excited to share this with you. And yes, I did observe that how each season of Daredevil, you were in a different location. They were not fucking around with this opening episode, like you said. They also did not show all that much mercy with the continuity lockout with this. I expected something along these lines with season three of Daredevil what with everyone saying it would happen if you missed Defenders. Which I still haven’t seen Defenders as I haven’t yet worked out the timetable of what seasons to watch of which shows and in what order before getting to Defenders. We both had the shared happiness of seeing our avocados at law that is N, M, and P. Well, the joy was there last night. Seeing your reaction and your expressions of happiness, yeah, I just started crying. Had caught wind about Bullseye being in this, good shot with the paperclip as a warning of his reappearance. And it brings us to Foggy. It was lovely to see him again; we both were looking forward to more. In your case, you express rediscovering love for Foggy in your recent rewatch, a sweet sentiment by the way. Then the pain and rage came. My rage was twofold. One, my own anger over what happened; I goddamn near had my own Kingpin rage moment. Two, I knew what this would do to you, Jess. Christ, you already had such strong hatred for Bullseye from his actions in season three of Daredevil, chief amongst those actions, his killing of Ray. The grudge from which, as you are a fellow Slytherin is unsurprisingly still strong. And now Bullseye kills Foggy. Our dear Foggy. He didn’t deserve this. To die like this. That man was good. He was kind. He was the goddamn heart, soul, and rock of the group. We had very similar reactions to his death. My shift at work still stewing from it, and dealing with the dread and anticipation of your reaction was a test. Barely talked to anybody at work today. Sidenote, fuck those who give you shit for the crying, if any. And his death fractures everything, evidenced by how Matt gives up being Daredevil. ...And today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent where one is encouraged to give things up... How depressingly ironic. Bullseye, regrettably survived the fall, though now he is going to prison for life. For your sake, Jess, I hope we don’t see him again. You express doubt that we won’t, and just as you did, I haven’t seen the trailer so I couldn’t confirm or deny anything. But I hope, for your sake, that we don’t see him again. Unless it’s a death scene; that’d be lovely. I continue to feel the strong guilt over Kingpin and Vanessa being my favorites of this show, when both got on your shitlist, especially after season three. Which makes it weird that I continue to be guiltless and shameless over my love of Emperor Palpatine, as he incited your fury a few times, which was admittedly life giving, seeing your reactions during said moments. With Bullseye, at least as it pertains to this variant, you have such hatred and rage for him, and I’m not offering any fucking resistance on that one, Jess, don’t worry. Leading to discussion of Kingpin, still my favorite of the show. Vincent remains a treasure. We are both ready to dive into the Kingpin and Vanessa of it all. In my case, they are one of the less than handful of comic book romances in film or television that just SPEAKS to my soul on a very VISCERAL level. Make of that what you will. It could have been different as I heard that Ayelet was initially unavailable to return as Vanessa. But when the strikes happened, schedules got changed enough that she could return, and thank God for that as Vincent and Ayelet are so amazing with their chemistry. And now a new wrinkle is added with the troubles they have. Adam being one of them. Hell of a moment when she asks Kingpin not to kill Adam, and Kingpin promises not to. You are not assured by that, and I don’t begrudge your position on that one, Jess. So, as anticipated from the ending of Echo, Kingpin is victorious as mayor. Leads to the one reunion, we had the palpable excitement on that one. Something oddly sweet how both Kingpin and Matt briefly commiserate over erstwhile diners that they favored. Kingpin having a laugh in response to Matt’s crack about Maya shooting Kingpin in his eye, likewise, oddly sweet. Yeah, we both anticipate that they won’t stay in their lanes, and we await how that will go. I do like how Kingpin assures Matt that he had nothing to do with Foggy’s death , which I believe him given the timeline, not to mention that Bullseye would not agree to any team up given the Julie of it all. Matt wisely does not make any overt or subtle threats toward Vanessa this time round. Good thing as Kingpin will most certainly, per his past description, spend more than six dollars in postage in retaliation to such a threat. In terms of Matt’s love life, early days on that one with Kirsten being more the matchmaker with Matt and Heather than she ever was with Marius and Cosette, an interesting reversal. The show was unkind with the rather futile attempts of providing a little meet cute to put a Band-aid over the gaping, festering wound that is Foggy’s death. While they’re at it, I’m surprised that they didn’t give us a paper cut and pour lemon juice on it. Plus, the romance there will pale, fall under the shadow of the Kingpin and Vanessa of it all. Maybe it’ll be nice. In terms of new characters, Cherry has my attention, as does Michael Gandolfini as this Daniel gentleman. It is slightly uncanny how Michael is a fellow man that looks so like his dad. BB is one to keep an eye on, especially with her last name. Your reaction made me say, “KNEW you’d catch that.” Heartwrenching though it largely was, a terrific premiere to open with, and if nothing else, I am most loving and appreciating sharing this new season of Daredevil with you, Jess. Thank you so very much for the exceptionally emotional and heartfelt reaction. Many hugs sent your way.

Similar response in both seeing the unfortunate business, and when Jess said what she said about holding a grudge.

I let out a full Sam Beckett "Oh boy" at you saying how much you already hated Dex. I can't say I had the same reaction, just because I spent the whole episode expecting it to be fake after the big deal they made about completely scrapping the original version of the show where both him and Karen were just randomly killed between seasons. So apparently that was a bit of an exaggeration by the marketing team, and only the season's first and last episodes were totally overhauled while the rest just had an occasional altered scene, so they were stuck having to get rid of them both somehow. Though now the word is they do have full control over the already filming second season which the original crew hadn't gotten to before being fired, so for all we know there's some Hand resurrection in the future. Sad to say I doubt you'll be getting your wish with Dex as I have a very hard time imagining they wouldn't have just killed him if their plans for him were really finished. Though I have to give props to Wilson for that bit of "Seriously, dude?" physical acting when Matt follows him to the roof, and if we get more of that I'm eager to see it. I've been a big Kingpin fan since I was watching the '90s Spider-Man cartoon as a kid, where he was brought to life by the mellifluous velvet tones of Roscoe Lee Browne (one of my favorite bits of pedantry is pointing out a black guy was playing the role years before the Daredevil movie stirred up so much controversy for it). And I still remember going into the first season of Daredevil thinking "Okay, impress me, Vincent." And of course he immediately became one of the greatest villains of not just the MCU but any comic adaptation, so seeing him come back like this opposite Charlie after a few false starts from both is a treasure. Of course the big standout of the episode is their reunion, which was naturally all over the trailers, where you half expect Fisk to advise Matt not to let himself get attached to anything he's not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if he feels the heat around the corner. Word is they both had a good deal of creative control over how it played out, and that love and expertise in the characters after ten years shines through every second of it. As for all the new characters, we still barely know them and they were probably casualties of having to give Foggy and Karen a proper sendoff. The one standout is Cherry just because he's played by a veteran of Homicide: Life on the Street and the objective greatest TV show ever made, The Wire, and that history can't help but inform my view of him. Also nice to see Heather back on the horse after her encounter with the Jedi went so badly, now if I could only get a sense of her personality. As for Kirsten, every time she popped up I could only think "Why isn't this Karen?", as if someone thought they could fire Kevin Nash and convince us some random jackass was Diesel. Just a couple weeks after Brave New World took such a beating for wimping out of having any kind of point with its inherently political story, it's pretty amusing to see this show just coincidentally have its portrayal of Fisk be an exact stand-in for Andrew Cuomo by the time it was released. I'm most excited here for Michael Gandolfini, still remembering the moment in The Many Saints of Newark where he turns in the phone booth and says "What you say?", and I actually started shaking because it was 100% like seeing his father again. Another case where I don't have much of a grasp on the character yet, but his sheer screen presence is carrying it much better than the others. And of course I have to mention BB Urich. Ben's death never sat right with me, and not just because it apparently made the crews of all the other Defenders shows think killing off a major black character was an essential part of the formula. The crew has long revealed that literally the only reason they did it was that no one had bothered to tell them a deal was being worked out with Sony for the Spider-Man characters and they thought this was the only time they could use him, so I'm very happy that's finally being rectified as best as possible. I came across you too late to participate in any original Daredevil discussion, and I'm thrilled to get that chance. You're already head and shoulders over any other reaction I've seen to it, so let's see where it can go.

Ryan

Daredevil S1, Jessica Jones S1, Daredevil S2, Luke Cage S1, Iron Fist S1, Defenders, The Punisher S1, Jessica Jones S2, Luke Cage S2, Iron Fist S2, Daredevil S3, The Punisher S2, Jessica Jones S3. I didn't have to look any of that up; thanks autism.

Be nice if my reaction to Jess reiterating her hatred for Bullseye was merely the Quantum Leap, “Oh boy.”. Knew that the hatred for Bullseye would increase, particularly as the older reactions are fresh in my mind after seeing them after seeing seasons one through three of Daredevil on Disney+. Frankly, season three was easy enough to follow along with even without having seen Defenders, thanks for the comment on the viewing order for that and the other shows by the way. Main thing that helped, far as I can tell, is that Kingpin’s storyline was unaffected by Defenders. I can see the thought of this being a fake out. The prayer card really is the final nail in the coffin for that idea. Plus, it helped that I really hadn’t heard much in the way of specifics about how extensive the retooling was. Of course, there’s going to be more Hand shenanigans, which is where I’ll need to catch Defenders before that. I reiterate my hope that Jess never does have to see this variant of Bullseye again, unlikely though it is that said hope will come to pass. The physical acting with Bullseye having that, “Oh, for- Do you EVER give up?” moment was good, yes. No, yeah, Kingpin is one of the best of the Marvel villains. Shared love for the Roscoe Lee Browne portrayal. Lord, that man had a voice. Said portrayal, yes, predates the excellent Michael Clarke Duncan portrayal, where the issue of him being black was never an issue. Because one, it was Michael Clarke Duncan, two, there wasn’t really anybody else who could physically play the role with that level of talent. Heard about the show years back, thought, “Who the FUCK is going to be Kingpin if Michael’s gone?”, then I heard Vincent was cast, and I immediately called that perfect casting. Sure enough, the man knocks it out of the park. Charlie, I was largely curious on his take on Daredevil. Helping is that I wasn’t particularly attached to the Ben Affleck variant. Vincent and Charlie do good work. Well shown in that diner scene where there is indeed the expectation that Kingpin will discuss that he has this recurring dream that he’s drowning. And he’s got to wake himself up and start breathing or he’ll die in his sleep, and he and Matt will concur that the meaning of the dream is about having enough time. You can tell Vincent and Charlie spent the time working out the scene to get it to where it ended up. Still getting used to the new characters, of whom, we have a shared opinion on liking Cherry. We shall see if Heather has better luck with a relationship with Matt than she did dealing with Gi-hun, Jeri Hogarth, Tommen, and the Wookiee showing up and fucking shit up. Keep hearing the opinions about Brave New World being on the weaker side with the having any kind of point with its inherently political story, which, I mean, it is a comic book superhero film, so I’m not going to take it too personally when I see it. It does sound funny that they wimp out, as you say, and this show is being bolder, aided by recent events providing some good ammunition. Looking forward to more Vanessa. We are going to have our eye on Michael Gandolfini, who has that much of a striking resemblance to his dad, yes. Have heard about the troubling trend the Defenders shows had with killing off certain characters. And I did hear that Ben was killed in part because they didn’t know about the Sony deal. Nice that we get to meet BB in this series. Hoping for Ellison to appear and share scenes with her. I liked Ellison a lot. Boy did it hurt seeing Jess react to Ben’s death though. As I said, the guilt for loving Kingpin and Vanessa is reaching strong levels here on Jess’s channel. Though at least there is the shared feelings on this variant of Bullseye. I loved all the Daredevil reactions Jess had when I finally saw them after seeing the show. Already it’s great to start this one with her. We should be in for a grand time to come.

Ryan

I liked Brave New World quite a bit, though there are a few scenes where it's VERY obvious there were heavy alterations late in production and one of the actors had to be CGI'd in, kind of like Leia in Rise of Skywalker.
