Oh Jess... Here we go again, I guess.

sesskasays

I (for the first time ever) am very glad that what I'm reacting to tomorrow.....my favorite is already dead.

DieWinterkirsche

Well, I hope that your second most favorite in whatever you'll react tomorrow stays alive too - good luck! :)

The season has flown by, which tends to happen when you drop three episodes to start. (Impatient bastards.) Talk about a hell of a penultimate hour for the season. No need to apologize for the post-episode thoughts, Jess, because you are always wonderful with that, particularly as they are always authentic and genuine. And leeway is given considering the emotional devastation, I’ll address that in a minute. I will say that the brief part where you talked about making mental notes when you watch things, it’s familiar as the way you describe it, you have a similar method as my dad and I when we would watch things. Especially if it was in the movie theater, I’d catch Dad pointing at spots and made the note to recall when and where it happened in the movie. We start by addressing how Angstrom got better. One thing that kept my mouth shut about the Angstrom business before that was revealed was the question of was this the Angstrom we knew, or a separate variant. The opening now reveals the former. Assessing his survival makes a man note, “Seems a touch contrived, but all right. Makes enough sense if nothing else.” We still have the shared curiosity as to how Angstrom’s sales pitch went. Chaos and carnage abound this hour. Powerplex seems quite happy with the perceived vindication, and to be part of the battle, and he’s practically yelling, “YEAH, BITCH!!” as he fights the army of Invincibles. We also catch up with that damn mummy who made me say, in response to his one line, “Wait, “Wretched females”? What are you, a Ferengi?” The heroes all stepped up to the plate. Cecil and Donald did the work, they both got me emotional too. They have help from Brit, who, yes, Mike, sorry, Brit did say to let them know if they died. Mike’s, again, sorry, Brit’s not really that touchy feely, you know, outside of when he spends time with Stacey and Kaylee. It was also a quick emotional moment when Immortal spoke of the variant of Mark being inferior to the mainline Mark. I loved that moment. Much though he has his trust issues with Mark, and he has the personal disagreements. Not to mention how Immortal and Kate seem to be getting a lot of hate as of late. Even so, say what you will about him, push came to shove, Immortal had Mark’s back. Respect. Debbie got the good scene with Oliver, likewise, they say she stayed safe at Paul’s. Would have been nice to check in on her after everything that happened, though we both had relief over William and Rick being ok. Eve fought well, wounded though she was. This after she and Mark commiserate over shit dads, which in response to Mark understanding that, I note, “Touché, but Eve’s dad is a special kind of awful, let’s be honest.” We both had zero fucking patience or time for when said dad showed up. A man just wants to yell, “You’re picking the WRONG FUCKING day, Bub!!” Loved your own sentiment imparted. Gets to you, the scene with Eve’s mom. You spoke well of how the themes of the season came together. Mark is absolved of one guilt only for another to befall his shoulders. And yeah, like Twelve said, “Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose.” Oliver is on the side of just killing Angstrom, though he at least was grossed out by the arm, loved your own reaction to that. It is also good to see Oliver listen to Mark when subduing Powerplex. And now Angstrom is in deep shit with the Technicians who had the threat of “You will serve us, or we’ll TEAR. YOUR. SOUL. APART!!” I loved how Cecil acknowledges that although the smarter money would have been just to kill Angstrom, it’s not wrong that Mark didn’t, because it shows he is a good man. And Cecil knows that if he were in Mark’s shoes, I’d be the same, he’d have not hesitated, simply saying. “You went after my mother, sir, my MOTHER. So, I am not here to threaten you, I am here to kill you.” We both had the good response to how although Mark still is averse to working with Cecil, he still expresses gratitude to Cecil’s words and actions, and it’s honestly nice that they end up in a tentative proverbial Switzerland, so to speak. Leads to the ending. Now, again, you pride yourself on being open and honest with us when you get spoiled, Jess, I extend the same courtesy. And if I had a channel of my own, I’d have opened a video for this episode discussing how I kind of went into this vaguely knowing about something that was coming; the question being would it have been in this episode or next, and like how you do, bring it up when it transpires. The precise detail being the appearance of Conquest. The image of the character, and some vague rumblings came my way at one point or another. Ergo, if I did have a channel, people would probably be disappointed by my more or less non-reaction to Conquest, followed by my somewhat pointing to the screen and confirming that this was what I kind of knew was coming, by flatly saying, “...That was it.”. This was, incidentally, my exact reaction to Conquest appearing late last night, followed by my taking a pull from my beer. Nice to see your own reaction to the scene. We are set to have a big showdown next week. And given the actors involved, I worry that this will tap into some deep wounds and trauma for you, Jess, and I’m very worried for you and I will be very sorry about that if it happens. We both got thrown by the absence of an extra scene. The Amazon player indicated as much, but I still stayed put and waited to see, so I would not feel silly, Jess. We were both cautious. There ended up not being the scene, so once that was clear, I just grabbed another beer, you know, one for the road, then hit the sack. And now I cannot put it off any longer. We now talk about the death of Rex. We start with the scene with him and Rae, which continued the trend of the two of them having very adorable scenes together. Watching your reactions to that made a man’s heart sink. Leading to the big emotional moment. I confess that my own reaction was somewhat subdued. Probably because my energy got sapped by the Foggy of it all. That, and since it was Ash Wednesday yesterday, I didn’t really eat anything, so energy was shot there as well. The greater emotions were just thinking of you, Jess, and how this would hurt you, and the sadness and anger that came from that was potent. Basic thought was, “We just lost Foggy on Daredevil. And now we lose Rex on Invincible!? ...I don’t believe this. I don’t FUCKING believe this!!” I suppose it should have been expected. After all: When has Rex EVER followed orders? And now seeing your own reactions, a man’s heart shatters very slowly seeing the pain that Rex’s death caused you. Silver lining being he died well. He died a hero, that you pointed out as well. And “My entire goddamn skeleton, dickhead.” are some damned BADASS last words. I cannot improve on anything you said, which is why my discussion of Rex is relatively brief, that and my loquacity ran rampant. One thing I wish to highlight what you said. When you spoke of Rex’s heart. Yeah. Yeah, he had a heart of gold that he didn’t show to much anyone. Lovely, therefore, that you saw it, and appreciated it. Godspeed, Rex. Thank you for the heartfelt reaction, Jess.

Well, this is the opposite of what everyone needed after that Daredevil opening, thanks guys. I think it's pretty unquestionable that Steven Yeun is the MVP here, and I'd never before considered him as a candidate for one of these "Look upon my range, ye mortals, and despair" stories, but he completely nails it, capturing the story of every one of these guys in just a few vocal inflections that let us imagine the rest. My favorite is definitely the Syndrome-type one who fights the Guardians; killer Ben Schwartz impression there. Which is a very good thing because he has to pick up the slack from a much less interesting version of Angstrom Levy who's been robbed of all his motivation beyond just chaos, and it's painful to hear Sterling trying his hardest to bring some gravitas to these cartoon villain lines. Say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos. And then it's saved some more when it turns out those surgeons are actually the Cenobites. I had the distinct thought "No fucking way" just at that first "No," and then Doug Bradley keeps going with that unmistakable majestic delivery, and I need so much more of this, especially since it's not making him go through the makeup again. Hell, bring in Jamie Clayton even, let them mix it up. But of course, there's the part everyone will really be focused on, Rex Splode. I never would have imagined during the first season that anyone would get the slightest bit emotionally invested in this guy, but now the fans everywhere online are mourning. And the biggest part of that has to go to Jason, who was able to keep that core of who he's always been so it never feels like the character development is cheating, while showing us so much more of how good a person he can be when he wants. I do wish they hadn't given him the most obvious death-foreshadowing speech since Gwen Stacy's graduation, but getting his own "The name is Gambit, remember it" had me just as involved as back there. Even more impressive is that from all I've read from the comic fans, this was all original to the show, as in the comic Kirkman seemed to quickly lose all interest in him as the subplots kept piling up and never got back around to doing anything with him. So, what else? Donald's "That's what I do" hit me surprisingly hard. After I was sure Aaron Paul was done for the season, he was a very welcome addition, especially with them resisting the urge to have him say "He can't keep getting away with it." Oh, and while I stopped watching the show long before he actually showed up, I'm very happy for the Walking Dead fans who are presumably about to see Steven get some payback on Jeffrey Dean Morgan (at least the ones who aren't too distracted ranting about Negan being the nicest, smartest, sexiest character ever created by humans who never did a single thing wrong). I had my own version of that as a Deadwood fan with Timothy Olyphant kicking Gerald McRaney's ass in Santa Claria Diet, so I can't begrudge anyone else getting it.

From what I’m seeing, it’s nice that there have been the comments of everybody thinking of Jess as it seems there was a consensus view of we have a “Goddamn it. Goddamn it, not again.” response to Rex dying, and anticipating that it would be rough for Jess following the Foggy of it all. And Jess, given what I surmise the show in question to be, we have the shared favorite there, and my second favorite already got cruelly and offensively killed, so you speak of having the relief that that worry of losing your favorite’s off the table, that makes two of us.

Rotten timing to be sure. Steven does show considerable range, I mean, he showed it here, on The Walking Dead, and Beef. But he kicks it up a notch this week. Angstrom’s motivation did devolve, and yeah, it doesn’t feel right having someone of Sterling’s talents delivering the weak lines, good though he still is. He did kick up the fuss with the multiverse of it all, which is probably not legal. Also, let’s not forget, let’s NOT forget, Dude, that keeping wildlife, an amphibious rodent, for uh, domestic, you know, within the city... that ain’t legal either. Shared thing of needing more Doug Bradley; Lord that man still has a voice. The big talking point is about Rex. Season one, the enjoyment was similar to loving Larry Linville as Frank. You don’t particularly like the character, but you greatly appreciate the talent in bringing him to life. It says a lot about how far Rex came when everyone is in mourning. The death foreshadowing, one, I still am amused that when revisiting the on the nose Gwen speech to prepare for the reaction Jess had, I found it wasn’t AS blatant, and I said, “I remember that part of the film being a lot heavier handed. Huh.” Still heavy handed, to be clear. There was the question of was it applying to Rex, Rae, or both. One thought was Rae was going to save Rex at the end, and she’d die. I would have gotten more emotional at Rex’s death myself were I not still reeling from Foggy, and I was on fumes as Ash Wednesday is not a good day for food for me. Interesting to hear that Rex’s death is an invention for the show. Explains how the fans didn’t spoil that shit. Shared feelings of being hit surprisingly hard over Donald’s line, and Cecil’s response to it. Surprising to get more Aaron this season. The comparison to the one line is inevitable. My brother, last I talked to him is still behind. I sent him one of those “spoilers without context” memes of Jesse saying that line. No word back yet if my brother’s caught up so he can understand the reference. One thing I forgot to bring up was Eve’s mom talking about the girl from the Atom Eve Special. That part hurt. The Negan jokes are ones you start taking shots for. The fans too distracted ranting about Negan being the nicest, smartest, sexiest character ever created by humans who never did a single thing wrong need to talk to a therapist, and they are certainly obnoxious in the comment section. Jess spoke about that once or twice. I’m a villains guy who has Negan second to Alpha for being my favorite character of that universe, and even I’M not THAT sick. The rematch should be interesting. In terms of my version of that, uh, I don’t think I CAN get my own version of that. I mean, for Jess, Glenn’s death is the saddest of television/the one that wounded her the most. Thinking on what death was the saddest of television/the one that wounded me the most, yeah, I can’t get such a thing like how you said about the Timothy Olyphant kicking Gerald McRaney’s ass in Santa Claria Diet what have you. Then again, my very close second in this category was on Doctor Who with Clara’s death, so there could be something down the road with Peter Capaldi and Jenna Coleman getting payback of some kind against Maisie Williams. ...That’d be all right.

I highly recommend the reactions from Pretty Much It, where one of them has gotten completely obsessed with what the point of the mummy story is. They wait until the season is over to put everything out, and this is going to make him nuts. I really hope the current Daredevil crew remembers that Fisk personally murdered Ben and the presence of BB is going somewhere with that. Because otherwise I'll just be kind of wondering why they went to the trouble.

And of course we later got an actual Deadwood finale movie where the entire town gets to beat him up, so that was pretty incredible. I had some attachment to Glen since he was there from the start, but I still had a hard time working up any emotion when I learned about his death just because it seemed so much like the cliffhanger had been structured that way because the crew hadn't yet decided who was going to die, so why should I care? I went through that bullshit with the notorious "Who's in the coffin" on Arrow and got burned for it, so I'm not letting it happen again. Mostly I was just laughing at how it made his big fake-out death on the dumpster entirely pointless.
