"You jest, of course. I'm indestructible. The whole universe knows that.", The Master, "The Mark of the Rani" The Master is back! Who could have guessed that? And then Master kills the dog - what an absolute monster! "You're unbalanced. No wonder the Doctor always outwits you.", The Rani, "The Mark of the Rani" But I do like the slight-misdirection that this is a pure Master story when it is actually a story introducing a new Time-Lady. The Rani is played by Kate O'Mara - apparently "Dynasty" is her best known TV appearance but she had numerous other stage and film and TV credits. Actually, we could have seen her in Classic Who before because she was considered for some good parts in some interesting stories ... think of the important female roles in "Inferno", "Kinda", "Snakedance" and "Resurrection of the Daleks" - it's actually quite fun to think back on those stories. One of the stars of this story is surely the filming location - the area of Ironbridge Gorge and Blists Hill industrial museums - similar to the St Fagans National Museum of History exterior locations they used in "The Family of Blood" two-parter. And there's a scarecrow in that one too. "Well, you've certainly never done a day's labour in your life.", Ravensworth, "The Mark of the Rani" Lord Ravensworth is played by Terence Alexander. He was well known for his role in the long-running detective show: "Bergerac". As you would imagine, lots of Who-stars appeared in that show that you would recognise. Most obviously was Louise Jameson (Leela), but also appearing in various episodes were: Annette Badland (Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen), Ian Marter (Harry Sullivan), Maureen O'Brien (Vicki), Mary Tamm (Romana-1), Mark Strickson (Turlough), Liza Goddard (with the wonderful hair in "Terminus"), and Richard Hurndall (the First Doctor in "The Five Doctors"). The show was created by Robert Banks Stewart who wrote "Terror of the Zygons" and "The Seeds of Doom" for Classic Who. One of Colin's anecdotes for this story is that during the scene where the Doctor rubs earth into his face to make it dirty - well, a dog had just visited that location (probably the dog we saw earlier). There was no (as Colin put it) "rush of sympathy when an actor's in trouble". Colin relates this on the commentary track. "A hyperactive Peri. Too ghastly to contemplate.", The Doctor, "The Mark of the Rani"
