I absolutely adore this episode. The scene with Sam and Mary in the bunker, especially when Sam tells Mary her being back fills in his biggest blank, never fails to make me tear up. In my opinion it might be the softest, sweetest line in the show. Sam has never known his mother, not really. A few hours with her past self, and a brief interaction with her ghost just isn't really enough. And he finally gets to meet the real her and give his mother a hug. After how horribly he has been treated, Sam getting this big of a win is so well deserved and earned. Also, i am a little surprised by how you reacted to the opening of this episode, considering your reaction to Season 7 Time For A Wedding with Becky. As soft and sweet as the ending of this episode is for Sam, the opening is probably one of the most brutal attacks on Sam that we have seen. Toni (whose full name is Lady Antonia Bevell, fun, or I guess not fun fact for you lol), unlike Becky, doesn't draw a line when it comes to assaulting Sam. She crosses every single boundary, stripping away all of Sam's autonomy. And considering how little respect Sam gets in regards to his bodily autonomy, between the multiple possessions, Becky's drugging, the demon blood... to have anyone, let alone another human who is supposed to be a good guy, assault Sam like this is horrifying. Even the way she brags about it after the spell breaks, asking if it was good for Sam, and saying how fun it was, just solidifies how evil she is acting. I do agree that watching Dean and Mary's interactions, the little bit of friction and tension there, it is incredibly well done. Unlike Sam, Dean actually did have a relationship with Mary before she died. He has memories of her, childlike memories of a caregiver, an idol, someone perfect and infallible. Dean remembers the woman who died, so he doesn't have the same sort of... clean slate that Sam has with Mary, the chance to have a new and unique relationship. The history between a child and his mother is going to absolutely come into play for the grown hunter and his long absent mother who was also a hunter. I am excited to see the rest of your reactions to this season as the story develops

That scene with Sam at the end is sweet. Particularly how there’s a boyish quality to his voice and demeanor. The opening, Jess did say she hated that, the feeling is mutual. Really rotten thing to say when Toni (terrible luck for Jess with that name) taunted Sam. It just gets glossed over by the narrative which is horrific. I suspect that Jess didn’t really bring it up again in the post-episode thoughts for the reason of that she’d go on a tangent. I’d have been here for the tangent if she had. It is interesting that yeah, though he was young, Dean does have the memories of his mom. To now be thrust into this new sort of relationship with his mom, compared to Sam having a “clean slate” as you described, it is going to be something Dean’s going to have to sit down and think about how that’s going to go. After he stops tying one on at the end of the episode that is, which, I don’t blame him for needing a few beers on that one. Should be fun seeing how Jess reacts to what’s to come.
