Just like last weeks Daredevil and Invincible: Here we go again... I'm so sorry, Jess. Plus, I hope Rocco gets better soon! :)

Thomas Corp

Sorry to hear you had a rough night with minimal sleep. Hope the trip to the vet goes well for Rocco. Praying for you both, Jess. Now to the episode. An emotional and quite brilliantly done episode, like you said. Start by talking about the Kingpin and Vanessa plotline. They are very slowly tearing my heart in two with Kingpin and Vanessa having their marital problems. The pain that Vincent and Ayelet convey our dear couple going through it is quite frankly sublimely wonderful acting. You mention that them not being on the same page may likely combust, I’m not going to be looking forward to that if it happens. Liked how you sided with Vanessa in the one area. You talk about Kingpin trusting BB will prove a mistake. I doubt he’s trusting BB much, though he is trying to use her for his own purposes, which it seems likely that it could come around to bite him in the ass. Speaking of BB, you know I do believe that, given the love for Ben, you will quite like her. Bringing us to the big talking point of Hector’s trial. The one cop was stupid trying to threaten Matt. Never mind how you said the guy seemed in a hurry for round two, as Matt shuts him down, trying to tell on Matt would prove worse for him in the long run. Really settling on Cherry being my favorite of this season after Kingpin and Vanessa; the man did good work with the decoy. We unfortunately get our first strike against Cherry upon seeing his ball cap, which made me note, “Urgh. Mets fan. All right, try not to hold it against him.” Sucks when the witness flakes, leading Matt to pull the one bold approach. Share the having mixed feelings on that move, chief among them that he didn’t inquire about if Hector was ok with it. It was kind of the only play he had, though it paints a massive target on his back. It does then lead to the string of testimony that got to you. One imagines the cops wearing the ink of the distinctive skull didn’t provide the heartfelt stories, which speaking of the ink, yes, the Punisher surely would be pissed about it. Concerning the testimonies: See, I have to be a slight asshole about that. Had to cringe slightly as character evidence is quite useless for the reason that the prosecutor points out that simply because someone has or has not done certain things in the past, it does not preclude any facts or evidence of did someone commit a specific crime or not. Mind you, Matt’s strategy here feels more establishing a groundwork for the pattern of behavior, and it also highlights the one key piece of evidence that Hector did not have the amulet in this specific case, so a pass is given. It further balances out when the prosecutor goes on about how someone dies when hit by a train, which that’s just grasping at straws. And now, seeing your emotional reaction to the scenes, the complaint is lessened further. You also noted the prosecutor made a semi solid closing argument otherwise, so it is nice that I’m not completely alone with the observations I made. As you observe, the case is won, and Matt and Heather speak of Foggy, (I’m still not over it either, so you’re in good company, Jess,) and it reminds us of Foggy’s optimism, as you said. That faith in the system was one of his greatest strengths. Especially when he was trying to prevent Matt from crossing the line when Matt wished to kill Kingpin. A well founded concern now that we see what happened when Matt did cross the line by dropping Bullseye off the roof. Even if the fucker lived, the damage is done. So, yes, it is sweet how that part of Foggy lives on. And now to talk some of Hector. Your read correctly that Kamar has sadly died; Christmas Eve of 2023 if I saw right. Speaks volumes to his performance that with just the two episodes, he might have followed Ben, the Punisher, and Ray for being the pick for favorite of the season. Seeing you get invested in him, one, reminds us of the true compassion and kindness of your heart and soul. Two, it made me dread your reaction to the end. The gasp you made stabbed the heart. And to twist the knife in the wound, they have the sound of the coquís on the beach instead of music. Love that you realized that. The final scene led to a few thoughts on my end. One, you know that this isn’t the work of the Punisher himself, concur with you there. This isn’t his style. (Plus, we don’t see Jon’s face, nor his name in either opening or closing credits.) Two, I doubt Kingpin has any direct involvement nor connection to this or this ring of cops, and even if he did, you would think that he would have ensured the death of Hector was more public because when you kill a king, you don’t stab him in the dark. You kill him where the entire court can watch him die. And thirdly, doing that by itself, no, a man would have even more power as a martyr. To destroy a vigilante like the White Tiger, you would first need to turn him into what he hates the most. Namely men like Kingpin. Regardless, we end on that scene, we tip our hat to Kamar, and my hat is likewise lifted to you for the lovely Daredevil reaction. Again, prayers to you and Rocco that everything will be all right. Take care, Jess.

Concern wasn’t as strong this week, at least not before seeing the reaction. Seeing the reaction, seeing how Jess was getting emotional over the scenes with Hector, then there was that here we go again feeling and concern, as I’m saying, “Ah, shit.” Prayers are being sent for Rocco; hope he’ll be ok.

I've been there a few times staying up late with the dog. Once I even took one to the vet at 2 AM right before a big work day, but it was worth it. I'm keeping Rocco in my thoughts. One of the more frustrating things about the OG show was how little we got to see Matt actually doing his day job, and most of when we did was dedicated to showing how bad he was at it. So I was very happy to see so much time dedicated to it here, in which he gets to be really good. Most of all the trick with getting Nicky to the courthouse, where the whole time I was thinking "Please tell me you learned something from how the whole business with Ray Nadeem went down." And his one big questionable move actually does get called out by just about everyone, only for us to see it was ultimately the right call. I got a bit of a chuckle from what the prosecutor's closing argument was reduced to, and I kind of expected him to end with "Now imagine she's white...yeah, I don't know where I was going with that." My one question is portraying Matt and the cop as having a mutually assured destruction thing, since I'm pretty sure defending himself from a gun to his head would get off a lot easier. But of course, the real star here is Kamar de los Reyes in his final acting role before his death from cancer on Christmas Eve 2023. I've tried looking it up, and it's frustratingly hard to get a picture of how the show's original shoot and then the reshoots lined up with that, but since Hector is in full costume for the whole final sequence I feel pretty safe saying that was added to close the question of why he stopped showing up (seeing as it would be way more awkward to replace an actor mid-season than what's happening with Baylan). And for now all I want to focus on is how incredibly strong he is in this role, every single facial inflection an interesting addition that tells us exactly what we need, and giving wonderful gravitas to his poetic lines about his home. I instantly wanted to check out everything else he's done, and I hate that there won't be any more. I've also spent the last week looking up more about White Tiger and found that a few characters have taken the name, so we might be headed there if they want to keep whatever original plans there were for him. I'm very impressed that the show actually seems to be going full steam ahead on this ACAB story with the Punisher-idolizing cops. Of course there's no way that's actually Frank at the end; even setting aside how it makes no sense for the character, why wouldn't they use his face for the big reveal? I'm starting to be reminded of how the original script for Infinity War had Steve Rogers only show up at the final battle in Wakanda with that jump into frame to save Vision, and I have a feeling we're building up to something similar as the Punisher is driven to show these guys how wrong they are about him. And it'll certainly be nice to no longer have our last image of him be gleefully mowing down a bunch of black teenagers minutes after he let a literal Nazi go scot free (and followed by a dedication to Stan Lee as if that was at all what he was about). Oh yeah, that was a thing that happened, and was basically the one thing that made me happy about those shows ending when they did.

I'm hoping that Adam is like Billy from Twin Peaks, this guy we never see but he's having an affair with a prominent character and everyone's worried about something happening to him. One other nice bit from the trial is the prosecution overplayed their hand by going for murder one, and if they'd just done a manslaughter charge they may well have gotten it, which is why you'll often see a surprisingly lesser charge than the crime seems to warrant in real life. My brother is not at all a Scorsese fan and especially hated that one, but agrees it's now hilarious to see Daniel Day-Lewis throw an ax into a picture of the man he'd later win an Oscar for playing (and after killing the original choice for the role).

Now you mention it, I’m curious how the prosecutor tried to sell the murder one as the big criteria there is premeditation. The murder two makes more sense, though he’d have probably had greater success with the manslaughter charge by itself. I do hear divisive opinions on Gangs of New York. My brother and I love it and quote it a fair amount. Love the character of Bill the Butcher, which yes, the irony of that one moment is great, made better by the fact that Liam Neeson was set to play Lincoln in the Spielberg film for the longest time.

I did hear that that was a big complaint of the Netflix run of Daredevil: how we really didn’t get all that much of Matt actually doing his job as a lawyer, and what we did get, he was appallingly sloppy at it. The worst part being when he just devolved into goddamn closing arguments when he was supposed to be questioning the Punisher. (It was also weird how Reyes was completely ok with the ME report being thrown out because of Elektra as their whole case was built around that just as much as the defense.) It is nice to see the legal side get more focus again. Heard fans made the same Ray Nadeem comparisons. It does work how they lampshade the big questionable move that Matt pulls, and even though it paid off, it is still called out as being iffy. Good use of the Time to Kill quote. Fair note on the gun to the head question. Feels more in addition to the tough sell of saying Matt can throw down, the mutual destruction was more they were both where neither of them should have been. That one cop sure was cocky though. Couldn’t say for sure about the filming schedules. I was planning to hold off on speculation about Hector until we were later in the show. Like with Baylan, the discussion only really started after the penultimate episode when it looked more and more likely that his character’s arc would not be concluded. Here, it would seem Hector’s story has finished, (Tough I’m hearing some fans sound unconvinced,) and it means, barring flashbacks, Kamar likely had his final bow. You do feel the sadness of Kamar’s death. He had one hell of a showing here. Gets you seeing how he got Jess as emotional and invested in Hector as she did. White Tiger being a legacy mantle would be a good way to continue with any future projects, provided they take that path. Very bold approach that they’re taking with the story with the Punisher-idolizing cops. Sure as shit wasn’t the Punisher himself at the end. Never mind how it’s not his style, his face isn’t shown, and Jon’s name wasn’t the first thing shown in the credits like they did with Vincent’s name to preserve the big surprise Kingpin appearance after the Punisher trial ended. Curious to see how the plotline progresses. As to the last shot of his show coming after what you said about the one character. My love for said character notwithstanding, yeah, it doesn’t exactly send the best look. Though, to be fair, Punisher always has been a divisive character, so I guess it sort of does make sense that his show closes on him doing shit that would leave a bad taste in one’s mouth.

Oh, and one more bit: one of the cops who gave a good report on Hector was an "Officer Morales." Not exactly our first hint of that plotline since we got Donald Glover as Aaron in Homecoming and he showed up as the actual Prowler in Across the Spiderverse, but I have to think they wouldn't still be going with this for no reason.
