The episode was intense, which was of course, completely expected, like you said. Evidence of this is how even though you know with complete certainty that Picard will live through this, the intensity loses none of its potency. A big thing of this is that Picard is off the board, and how the crew deals with that. Sweet reaction you had to Picard’s old friend’s one big scene. Love how Riker selects Shelby as his first officer. I love his thing of you don’t have to like someone to work with them. And it is great how they moved past their friction, and they got the damn thing done. I expect no less, Jess, that you would have Geordi as first officer. The Slytherin and Hufflepuff energy and power that you and Geordi would have would be most impressive, and I would live to see it. Speaking of Geordi, his role is minimal in this. The reason being LeVar had emergency surgery and was unable to film with the rest of the cast. They sneak him in later. They do a good job of incorporating Geordi in whilst accommodating LeVar. And it’s pretty seamless, even when you know what to look for. It’s like the Hobbit trilogy with the scenes of the White Council where you have Sir Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett, and Hugo Weaving filming in New Zealand with a stand-in/stunt double for Saruman, and Sir Christopher Lee given his advanced age and faltering health filmed in London, and they spliced it together. That Guinan scene gets you right in the heart how she tells Riker that he has to let Picard go. The mention of Picard and Guinan’s relationship: Sounds like it would be a good story for another time, which now is not the time. Great to see your encouragement of Data and Worf being the sneaky duo and successfully getting Picard back. Speaks volumes how bad Picard is when Beverly freely admits how much time she’d need, though she and Deanna put in the work. Just as her son did, and pride in Wesley is strong here; that young man was one very cool customer this episode. Gates gets you in how much though Beverly remains cool under fire, she’s holding back a tsunami of emotions, particularly when she tries to talk to Picard. Horrific to see the aftermath of of Wolf 359. I imagine the intent thirty-five years ago was that this would be essentially a Pearl Harbor equivalent. Since the beginning of the twenty-first century of course, more common analyses have likened Wolf 359 to the Federation equivalent of 9/11, the comparison is apt. I see your reaction to the mention of Wolf 359, and I note, “The name is a familiar one to you, I see. I expected it would be.” Slightly amusing, your reaction to the scene Locutus had with Worf. In Worf’s place, I’d say to Locutus, “You say “raise quality of life”, but you guys aren’t the Sith, so no thank you very much.” They put together the dream team of Beverly, Deanna, and Data working together to get save Picard, with O’Brien at the technical side, so Geordi can stay in engineering. A damn good Watsonian reason for Geordi to be absent, and O’Brien gets some good time to shine. That stare-down between Data and Locutus, chills. And I KNEW you’d appreciate as I do how Deanna senses when Picard fights. Stubborn man that he is, I relate, yes, he was waiting for the moment. Fantastic how Beverly then comes up with the strategy that Picard and Data work together to execute. Your reaction to all of it, marvelous. Lovely to see your delight that the expendable redshirt made it out ok. You had a good moment when they mention the Borg regeneration. Well, Jess, if they do regenerate, they could do so and become your Honey. After all, he was at one point Skynet. Complete SHIT though the movie was, your Honey as Skynet, along with Lee Byung-hun as the T-1000 was honestly great. Picard obviously is not ok, but he spoke to my soul how he masks the trauma with the dry wit, sarcasm, and the stiff upper lip combined, just to keep the onslaught of emotions at bay. With my Asperger’s, the feeling is very, VERY familiar. Sad to see Shelby go. That final melancholic scene of Picard just having that lost expression guts you. He will need to talk to Beverly, and of course he’ll need to see Deanna. Love how you spoke of that. I am told that better understanding of post-traumatic stress has allowed a much more favorable assessment and appreciation for Deanna over recent years. I just love how you really love her. She is third behind Picard and Beverly of the main crew for me, so it makes me happy, the love you show her. All in all, just a magnificent reaction to part two of this story. You spoke how there was the likelihood your energy would be shot given the troubling night with Rocco, hope things are better on that front by the way. The low energy did nothing to affect the excellence of the reaction, as I had anticipated. This is where you really shine, Jess. Because, and I know you apologize for not being as animated, no apology is necessary. It’s ok if your reactions aren’t the most animated. You being animated during reactions is not a necessity. It does certainly make certain reactions more fun and entertaining. But even in the times when you aren’t that animated, the emotions that you exhibit, Jess, are still very powerful. And that’s what we keep coming back for. Or at least it’s what I keep coming back for. Indeed, though less animated, your eyes convey everything, and the emotion shows through. And in this reaction to part two of this story, again, you were magnificent. Now you take a break along with our heroes, so that’s timing. I confess that early in the morning a week from tomorrow, I leave for a trip, so that sort of works in that next weekend I can focus on the last bits of packing for that. Look forward to the next reaction. I thank you very heartily for this reaction. And all the best to you and Rocco, Jess.

No, I'm not saying the line. It's completely played out, no one's laughing anymore, who do we think we're kidding? Like I mentioned last time, Michael Piller wrote Part 1 with zero idea of what would happen after the big cliffhanger, intending to leave the show for his own original projects while someone else was left to figure out how to handle it. Except for various reasons that really aren't that interesting, he ended up still stuck on the show for Season 4, and having to write this premiere himself. I can only imagine his family found him staring blankly into the distance, only able to say "What sort of supreme being could condone such irony?" (pretty crappy movie overall, but I maintain that one moment makes its existence worthwhile) Luckily, while it's generally considered a step down from Part 1, that's much more due to how truly exceptional Part 1 was rather than any flaws it has, and it provides a very worthy conclusion that manages to totally undo everything about the cliffhanger without feeling like a cheat at all. I have a hard time picturing Annie Wilkes having much of a problem here. Not so luckily, this encouraged the crews of not only this show but the rest of this period of the franchise to keep doing the same thing of wild season-ending cliffhangers with zero forward planning, which had...predictable results. But we'll get there. It's quite a neat experience coming back to this episode after the Battle of Wolf 359 became such a touchtone for the rest of the franchise, like watching a movie about a famous true life disaster and watching the characters blindly marching toward it. Especially knowing one of its casualties was a little-known scientist named Jennifer Sisko, whose husband swore to avenge her by Grabthar's hammer. It also provides the devastating emotional climax of The Autobiography of Picard, where after we've met several fun and engaging characters and wondered why the book is building up so many new characters we'd never heard of on the show, it turns out that's because Locutus personally fired the blast that killed them all. That really brought home to me the impact of this on Picard in a more personal way than I'd ever experienced before. And that's the most special part of all this. They make sure to show us that shot of Picard's tear early on to eliminate any comfort we could take that he might not actually be personally experiencing any of this, and that haunting final shot of him looking out the window makes clear this is far from over for him, no matter how much the reset button seemed to have been pushed with Beverly easily taking out all the implants. And from this moment on, there is a very admirable continued dedication to showing this experience permanently fucked him up and the best he can do is show how hard he can get hit and keep moving forward. And while I had some major issues with all parts of the recent Picard series, I'm extremely grateful that we got to see him and Seven of Nine talk about this, something I'd been wanting to happen for years. Take some well-earned rest after this, because this is one of the highest regarded seasons of any Trek series, and it is not always going to be kind to you. We can only hope some of the other upcoming shows will have more consideration after these past couple weeks.

After seeing the absolutely pitiful effects to insert Tim Blake Nelson into a scene of Brave New World due to a last-minute significant rewrite, I have so much more appreciation of what they were able to do with Levar here with much less advanced tech. Remember that brief period when Matt Smith was announced to be in some super secret role in Rise of Skywalker? That went a whole hell of a lot of nowhere, didn't it? I say give him more stuff like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

Thomas Corp

I do remember the announcement of Matt being in The Rise of Skywalker that never amounted to anything. I like to picture him as Ochi of Bestoon. The character has popped up in some books, and I hear Matt’s voice when the character has dialogue.

It is interesting how Piller planned to leave yet found himself coming back. Would probably lead to the line that you quoted, which in terms of amazing lines in less than spectacular movies, the one from Spy Kids 2 stands out when Steve Buscemi has the dead serious delivery of that line, “Do you think God stays in heaven because he too lives in fear of what he’s created?”. The perceived step down in quality is more attributed to part one being amazing, and the hype likely factors into it. It’s like how you see reactors on youtube having genuinely great times with Prequel and Sequel trilogies of Star Wars, especially as there aren’t the years upon years of build-up and hype to contend with. As it is, part two of the story is fantastic enough that old Annie would likely have no real complaints about how the Enterprise got out of this cock-a-doodie dilemma. Speak more of the future cliffhangers when we come to them, though I don’t recall ever having any great issues with any of them. Freely concede that they pale to this one, but that’s more the bar is just set too high. That is a good comparison with given how big a thing Wolf 359 has become, how seeing this now is like watching a movie about a famous true-life disaster and watching the characters blindly marching toward it. Order 66 has a similar feel twenty years later. Always a pleasure to see a damn good use of that line from Galaxy Quest, and you always instantly hear Alan’s voice when reading it. God bless that autobiography. I have that one and the one by Spock. The tear, as you said, does deliver the sharp knife to the heart as it extinguishes the hope that he might not actually be personally experiencing any of this. Even with the damn fine work of Beverly and Deanna helping him recover, yeah, that final shot tells us that the trauma from this is never going away. And how yeah, it is fantastic from a narrative perspective how there is the dedication to diving into how this ordeal permanently fucked him up, though he does adhere to that sage Rocky advice of how winning is done, good use of that line, by the way. Good note on how refreshing it is about him and Seven of Nine getting to talk about this. Here’s hoping that the other shows go easy on Jess, especially as her schedule will be beyond hectic from now until the end of the year from the look of it. At least, we have the reprieve from the brutality of Invincible for a while. I think Daredevil might be ok this coming up Tuesday, though I’m starting to think that the week after might be rough. That week incidentally, I’ll be out of state when they have the two episodes at once. I’m pretty sure I’ll keep up with the episodes, though I might be behind on the reactions. See how that goes. Reiterate that yeah, the other shows, we implore them, give Jess a break.

Buscemi has another of those lines, on the same subject even, in Michael Bay's The Island when the clone finds the real world and hears people talk about God for the first time. "You know how sometimes you really want something, and you pray for it? God's the one who ignores you."

Paul Hayes

I did enjoy your look-to-camera at the mention of "regeneration"!

Thanks for postponing your end-of-season break so that we could watch this reaction, Jess. It seems like both you and Picard need a well-deserved rest after this one. The Enterprise has two councillors on board if you take Guinan into consideration. If Troi is busy, just go to Ten Forward and speak to Guinan. It's usually a bad sign whenever a random officer joins the away team. I think Lieutenant Gleason survived because he wasn't wearing a red shirt. (That's my attempt at some humour.) Glad they drop the Riker-Shelby feud for the second part of the story. The writers probably realised how daft it was. It could have worked better in a story where the stakes weren't as high. Maybe a story about Starfleet's bureaucracy rather than the potential assimilation of the entire Federation.

Josef Schiltz

I hope that you are all okay considering that storm and tornados that have occurred?

Uh, well, there were some threats of it in Illinois via some strong winds, primarily that was Friday. My brother and sister in-law said that by them, they didn’t get any winds that were THAT severe. Around Friday some of the winds were a bit stronger than normal, but nothing to write home about. I surmise that the winds broke up, or otherwise lost momentum before getting anywhere that there would be concern for me or other loved ones. So, it all sounds all right. There is presently snow, though not much. Plus, in years past it has snowed on my birthday once or twice before. My birthday being over three weeks from now for frame of reference. So, sounds like not much to worry about, though I appreciate the concern, Josef.

Josef Schiltz

Always much concerned when all that stuff starts flying around over there. The awesome power of nature. I've only seen film and, of course, storm chasers who get up really too close to the damn things. They hardly ever touch down over here and we are, therefore, relatively lucky. Patrick Moore - if you remember, he was onscreen when Eleven started his laptop-phone 'zero virus' - had his garden observatory destroyed by a waterspout that came inland and he said, in his typical restrained manner, "Well! I certainly could have done without that, I can tell you!!" He was also one of the guest astronomers when Apollo made it's moon landing when I was seven. Pretty sure that the BBC wiped their programme. 🙄!! Patrick was also guest on Children In Need night during the Colin Baker era. We must see if we can get Jess to check that out. She would be delighted with it. It is on YouTube.
