This episode is freaking heartbreaking. Dean's devastated expression as he watches Mary leave, Sam's flinch at the door closing, and the pain and confusion in his eyes, Mary's overwhelming grief... just a Winchester Pain Fest that we haven't seen the likes of since season 1. Whether its John or Mary, these boys just can't help having complicated relationships with their parents. Although i will say, this episode did a solid job of balancing the heaviness of the Winchester Family Drama with the hilarity of Cas and Crowley, and I love that we get to see Rowena's fierceness to. Rowena is an absolute badass and I love when we get her magic on display. Also I feel like this is really her turning point. She isn't the same witch we met in season 10, and after everything with Lucifer, it feels like this is really where that new Rowena starts to step out. I think that is something this episode really does well, in showing how trauma changes someone, and there is a little bit of a parallel between Mary and Rowena there. Both women were murdered and came back to life. But where Mary needs to run (and not in a judgmental way, she just needs space), Rowena needs to fight, and put Lucifer back in his place. Both have been changed by their trauma, the headstrong, hunter Mary having lost her family and boys chooses to run and escape and focus on herself, and the villainous, selfish, evil witch Rowena realizes the consequences of her action and agrees to help fix it. Just a fascinating display of trauma, reactions and the pain that comes from opening old wounds. Especially for Dean, who has the ideal Mother image from his memories, and has to see the real thing not live up to that, and for Sam, who never got to know his mother, and now that she is back, she is walking away before he gets the chance. Superbly well done, and I can't wait for your reactions to the rest of the season

Yeah, there were tough moments of the look on Dean’s face and the flinch that Sam had. Wonder if the latter was direction that Jared received, or he made that acting decision himself. True, with Mary being gone most of their lives, they never had that chance of a great relationship with their mom. And obviously, they had the tumultuous times with their father what with John being John. Makes you more grateful that they had their damn good dad that was Bobby. Still not over his death as that episode was WAY TOO realistic and relatable on a visceral level. They had the good balance of tone. Much though Rowena is an enjoyable villain, it has been aggravating how the show kept pushing how impressive she is, when her track record felt like an eighties cartoon villain who gets defeated week after week, yet we’re supposed to still buy them as a threat. Yeah, Rowena is still delightfully entertaining, the problem, however, being they keep saying she’s powerful and dangerous, yet she kept feeling more flash than substance. Here, this episode finally gives her a real good time to shine and goes a long way of selling her threat level again. Of course, now it does feel like she’s turning a new leaf, so that should be interesting to see how that plays out. Dean does need to reconcile the image of Mary on the pedestal that he’s had in conjunction with his memories. Sam, being the little brother, plus no memories of Mary, you could see how it was easier to see that Mary was struggling, and as you say, it feels like he now had the chance to get to know his mom, and she leaves before he can. Just hope Mary finds some peace now that she’s decided to walk the earth. You know, like Caine in Kung-fu. Be nice if we got some standalone stories during her time with that.
