Oh, didn't expect this. Fun!

Faction Paradox

Amazing I was hoping you'd rewatch this and maybe some of the past celebrations like Death of the Doctor once you've finished classic Who

"I'll see you again, Mister." And then she's the only one who doesn't get her own lifelong version of him, because she had to be paired up with another black person even if he was a sex monster. No, I'm never letting that go. I wasn't quite able to appreciate this at the time, because (let me just check if this is still legal to say) I never liked Ten that much. I'll fully cop to part of that just being bitterness at getting so little of Eccleston, and none of it was the fault of David himself, who I always saw as doing his best with the material he got. It just felt like the writers all had their own idea of who he should be and made no attempt to find common ground, each simply writing him their preferred way on a level I've only seen one other time with the Buffy/Spike romance, which just made him seem horribly hypocritical and sanctimonious (even fucking Kathryn Janeway felt more consistent, and her own actress complained about this very thing). But looking back, it really is quite a lovely tribute with David's own love for the series constantly shining through. And of course there's now the added fun that he would later make Peter's daughter retrieve his devil spawn from her stink crevasse. And seeing all this just adds even more to that. Thanks for all you do.

As you're specifically talking about the character of Martha, then it's worth saying Mickey Smith was not a sex monster.

You know, I really wanted this to be a joyful and happy revisit to both the 10th Doctor and 5th fifth Doctors eras and don't want to start any arguments here, but since you're the one to unnecersarlily shit on his character and how he was written, let me just say I think it's absolutely BAFFLING that anyone could say the 10th Doctor had no consistency and the writers all had their own versions of who he was and couldn't find a common ground. He's not just the most well written and consistent Doctor ever imo, he's one of the most well written and consistent characters I've ever seen! "Horribly hypocrytical" and "sanctimonous", yes he was at times and that was a crucial part of his character arc and one of the main ressons why he's such a great and interesting character. You clearly weren't paying enough attention. The fact he still remains the most popular Doctor ever so many years after he left and after several different Doctors coming after him and two whole eras, speaks for itself. P.S. Sorry Jess, 10 is my favourite Doctor as I've mentioned before and I just couldn't let someone insulting him for absolutely no reason slide. This reaction was wonderful.

Such a lovely video to see this morning. You spoke well of the Whovian fandom and how they’ve embraced you, and it is this universe that really did make the channel take off. As I’ve said, it was my introduction to you and your wonderful channel. Around the time when Eleven’s hour was ending, and the clock began to strike Twelve. Such beautiful reactions you have had with this universe. And yes, the love for the Whovian fandom is warranted. Great people. Fun times. A little rough at one or two spots, and even then, here on patreon, it’s very lovely. With the special, always nice to see you react to Martha. Your reaction this time carries so much more weight and meaning than last time now that Five is in your top three Doctors. Oh, yeah, Ten and Five play off each other so well, and probably put forth an idea of the familial squabbling between father in-law and son in-law over the years. That subtext in retrospect is hysterical. Love the quick lampshade of Five looking older. And there’s the good line about the celery. Tis true that there are very few men that can pull off decorative vegetables in their wardrobe. God, your eyes just shined very brightly with love in this. The heart swells to bursting, seeing your reaction to Ten calling Five his Doctor, and that wasn’t acting. All your kind words about us, I can’t improve on any of it. The ten years of Whovian festivity on your channel, (technically seven in my case,) have been such joy to share with you, Jess. I know that with Classic Who, the end is nearer than we’d like. You speak true though, the Doctor will always be part of your channel. Thank you so, so much for the lovely video, Jess.

Also worth mentioning that the reason why Martha and Mickey ended up together is not because they're both black. It's because they both had unrequited loves for the Doctor and Rose, so they had something to relate to. I won't deny that there should've been some build up to Martha and Mickey getting together, but to suggest that there aren't deeper reasons for the reason they were put together is ridiculous because the connection is so plain to see.

Yeah, you can keep holding on to that about Martha if you like. She really needs much more appreciation than she gets. The other rotten thing is I quite liked Mickey even before seeing Jess and her channel. That stood out finding out she loved him as I never much heard anyone else share the opinion. Now, sadly, though there is still fondness for the character, it gets harder to separate the art from the artist. I get the bitterness of not getting much of Nine. I was worried about much the same thing when Twelve regenerated into Thirteen, especially after having gone through it with Daniel Craig succeeding Pierce Brosnan as James Bond. That and his whole run felt too overserious and the overarching plot felt more superglued and stapled together than the Sequel Trilogy. Though Skyfall does stand out as the crown jewel of that run. Thankfully it wasn’t as bad with Thirteen’s run, albeit yes, she is second to last on the ranking, but that’s more because of Chibnall’s writing. My beef is not with Jodie, she was great. I got to refresh my memory of Voyager as you do keep seeing the memes about Janeway. I’ll have that to fall back on that you say even Kate took exception to some of that. The whole first run for Davies, there is now the high school nostalgia. Ten is like Four in that they both end up at or around the center of my ranking, so I don’t mind much that you didn’t like Ten all that much. Makes a refreshing change of pace when you talk with the militant Ten fans who get upset when you say that Twelve and Eleven are your Doctors. Still haven’t figured out which one angers them more in that respect. In any event, yes this is a lovely tribute, made with great love. The hilarity of how the two men are now in-laws makes it even better. Just good to see Jess do the great work here, which I echo the thanks that you gave her.

What a lovely choice for a rewatch! Highly emulsional. One thing that I would say, Jess, is that we would love you to see the Children In Need cheque presentation 1985 presented by Terry Wogan. You are actually in the right time period in your Doctor Who travels for this one and there are no spoilers at all. There are some very, very welcome surprises which are delightful. maybe you can get someone to arrange it for you. I will keep from rabbiting on about any further simply because of possible spoilers of the surprise. it's only three-and-a-half minutes. Btw: The astronomer Patrick Moore co-presents this little segment. He was part of the UK's presentation team when there was BBC coverage of the moon landing on the 20th July 1969. He also had a little role in The Eleventh Hour on Jeff's laptop screen that Eleven 'borrowed' - "Give. It. Here! . . Blimey! . . " After he had done some shenanigans with the sonic, a number of scientists came onscreen. Patrick was centre-bottom.

It's now pretty amusing to remember this was before they caught on that literally no one would care about the actors looking older than they should if the show itself didn't go out of its way to point it out. I just wish Season 2 of Picard had taken this lesson regarding Guinan.

What a lovely video. In my mind, you are watching Doctor Who from the safety and comfort of Sesska's Spa.💓

If we pick the Early Early Access tier as a reference, you´ll finish Classic Who on the 6th of November, if there are no pauses and if we are not including the movie. :D

What does "make Peter's daughter retrieve his devil spawn from her stink crevasse" mean?

Ed Green

Although he does get the if meant seriously somewhat problematic line 'this is no place for a married woman'. Which suggests their work life may have caused problems in their relationship later on.

Ryan

That's a Patton Oswalt routine. His wife had been told by a fortune teller she'd never have kids, so he claims that when she found she was pregnant, he impulsively shouted "retrieve my devil spawn from your stink crevasse and prove the gypsy woman wrong."

Paul Hayes

I had wondered for a while if you might one day watch this again after seeing the Fifth Doctor's era, and it was lovely to see you re-watch it. Just as it's always been lovely seeing Doctor Who through your eyes, getting all these new, thoughtful and hugely entertaining insights. "All my love to long ago..." I've always loved that line. Thank you so much for all your reactions, and for your help with various Doctor Who bits and pieces of mine over the years!

Matthew Beckford

I was balling my eyes out just at your introduction. Bravo! I can't compose all my thoughts right now.
