I had tears in my eyes throughout most of this. I played the second game for the first time about a year ago, and I have been rather obsessed with it ever since. Its just phenomenal. I get so emotional about every part, reminiscing of the game, the characters and what will be coming. Here they are changing things up a bit, telling the story in a different way; and thats fine, it wouldn't work properly if we followed the game step by step for obvious (and spoilery) reasons. Yes Jess, prepare to have your heart ripped out again, as this story ramps things up tenfold and will take multiple seasons to tell - and I'm glad for it as it will allow the characters time to breathe and flourish, and the extended cast and scope of the story is far bigger than the first game/season. I was worried with the casting of Abby, since she is a seriously impressive brick shithouse in the game; and putting a wee slight thing like Katlyn Dever to play her (who was tried for the part of Ellie here too), is a brave choice. However they clearly casted her for the emotional stuff, and already we can see she is going to excel. When she says "slowly... when we find him, we kill him slowly", I got shivers; that's Abby alright! The music, oh the music straight out of the game gets me every time. The Longing Theme especially thats played in the opening few minutes, is so simple, but says so much. Great seeing the game composer, Gustavo Santaolalla at the party as well, nice touch, as is a lot of great Easter eggs for those who know the game inside out. Omg I never noticed Tommy and Marie's kid has dinosaurs on his sweatshirt, thats so good! The actress playing Dina as well is great, and her and Bella have real chemistry too, and showing exactly the loveable nightmare Dina is in the game!!! Both her and Bella sounds like their game counterparts inside that supermarket, especially when Ellie falls through the floor to start that terrific scene with those bloody stalkers! Catherine O'Hara is so damn great in everything, and though I've not see her in years, I'm reminded just how bloody good she is. Her character is something new, and her being married to Eugene is also new, even though we never met him in the game, though his presence was inferred a lot in the early game. He died of a stroke there, but Joel seems to have killed him as he got infected. I'm sure we'll see more of that. As she unloads her anger towards him onto him, its clearly intended to be a throughline of what this season is going to be. Pedro's acting is fantastic here too as we can feel he wants to unburden himself too, but won't allow it, as he thinks what he did in the hospital and lying to Ellie was done for her own benefit; but the switch where we see him almost talk, then close off, is superb. And I take back what I said about him. In the opening of the game, we have a similar scene with Joel speaking to Tommy about what he did, and Tommy asks "what did you do?" - and he looks at him with that piercing look, that goes right through you like fire, as he says there, that he "saved her". I didn't think Pedro could pull that off, as he has too warm and kind eyes in comparison to game Joel - but he did, and it was a powerful scene. Can't believe how good that party scene looked, it was straight out of the game! Though they have switched this scene up from near the end of the game (and also the patio scene) to the start of the series, it helps solidify this early bond between Dina and Ellie, and when Dina says to her "oh Ellie, I think they should be terrified of you" - just... The stuff with the pipes is new, but I think we know where that is going. I kind of love it though, that tendrils are all over the place, looking for non-infected. Thats far more terrifying than batches of spores from the game. And that last brief scene with the crew approaching. Abby is coming!!! This is going to be something!

Good to hear from you. Been a while. I’m behind on gaming. And from what I’m hearing about Nintendo, the habit has really spiked in price. Gets me a bit misty eyed seeing how this is already getting you emotional. I’ve heard rumblings how things have been different from the game. Pragmatic deviations given change in medium, makes sense. Like if Disney ever tackles KOTOR, much though there are some plotlines I’d love to see make the transition, realistically you can’t include everything, and there are things you can cut and not lose much if anything. Or just approach certain themes and plot points with storytelling tools that work better for film and television than it would in a video game landscape. Good to hear they’re doing well with adapting here. Been hearing about the physical differences between the game version of Abby compared to here. Does feel like they’re prioritizing the emotional stuff, like you said. My one thing with casting: if something’s not strictly speaking the most vital for who the character is, then you can be flexible. Plus, there are guys like Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, or Joe Pesci who are not tall men, yet they successfully play some terrifying individuals. Nice to hear that Abby is living up to her reputation. Didn’t catch the Gustavo cameo until it got pointed out. The music for this has all been good. Just a nice delight seeing Jess light up some at seeing the kid’s sweater. Isabela, I’ve seen in some things, like I said. I believe my proper introduction to her was in Sicario Day of the Soldado. It is nice to finally meet Dina, and already a positive response to her. Catherine is good in anything she’s in, and here is no exception. Makes me feel old anymore when everybody seems to only know her for Schitt’s Creek and the default image of her for me remains Home Alone and Beetlejuice. Just love how she’s never lost her touch as she is delightful. What’s been said about Eugene in this episode has me filled with dread that he and Gail will have the Bill and Frank episode this season. I’m going to need plenty of beer if they do that to me, as I really don’t think I’m going to be ready for that. Like Jess said, it feels like Joel doesn’t feel like what he did was wrong, yet the bigger issue is he lies to himself as to why he did what he did. Way I heard the fancasts of Hugh Jackman, I could see him saying the line with that stone cold adamantium look in his eyes. Pedro, as we see here, there’s definitely far more of the turmoil and conflict shown, which works very well. Heard from comments that the party was perfectly recreated. Good to hear the pipe business is new. Going by the season opener, should be one hell of a time. Question remains: the things that I know for sure will happen, do they happen in this season or next. Either way, we ought to have a lot of fun.

The “slow-motion gripping sadness” at the end the analysis — that’s how most game players feel for most of the second game. It’s a phenomenal game in terms of using gameplay and expectation subversion to force the player into an amazingly subtle range of emotions, but the prevailing sadness you feel — especially watching Joel and Ellie interact with one another and watching Abby emote her loss — is dominant. So I think the show is tonally spot-on so far.
