You know I do believe that you offer an accurate assessment of the perfect remedy for when you’re processing an episode of Black Mirror is to watch another episode of Black Mirror right after. I did the same, and a couple days later, saw the episode after this one, which is as far as I am at the present time with this season. A roller coaster of an episode is a fair description of this one. It is an effective slow burn where you try to process what the actual fuck is going on, and it leads you through it all with great success. We both had similar reactions to the Kubrickian date stamps of the episode. Love how you were delighted that you jumped less and less at that. I too am unfamiliar with the two leading ladies. Siena Kelly was great as Maria, and particular kudos to Rosy McEwen who plays Verity. She hits that right Ian McDiarmid sweet spot and plays it so well. By that I mean even before any of the weird shit happens, she comes across as a perfectly sweet, if slightly eccentric woman, that if this wasn’t a Black Mirror episode, you wouldn’t think anything of it. Since this is Black Mirror, the red flag is up, and Rosy hits that sweet spot of seemingly sweet, yet allows just enough of a view beneath the mask. By contrast, yeah, you and I had the same thing with Maria. I mean, yeah, she wasn’t exactly WRONG to be paranoid, but she really wasn’t as nonchalant and unbothered as she kept trying to tell people that she was. And she got REAL defensive when people tried talking to her about what was it about Verity, even before any weird shit happened. Leaves a man, and yourself to ask: What is the full story here? Loved your comment about the awkward reunion, and you brought up hometown visits. You talk about your visits to your hometown and how you try to avoid the kinds of encounters that is shown here. I’ve yet to move out of my hometown and the encounters as shown here happen a lot less often than you would expect. They did so well with the slow altering of facts and truth. Starting with the chicken joint that I could see some viewers honestly second guessing themselves, sort of like how you did. So, here’s the funny thing. I saw the episode, and the chicken joint was originally “Barnie’s” before being changed to “Bernie’s”. You, the version you saw has it the other way around, confirming what I read of Netflix put out two different versions of the episode just to fuck with us all. Clever bastards. Eventually, it becomes too overt, and you start figuring shit out. Loved when you caught the necklace, which is a great thing of at first, you don’t think much of it. Or if you do notice it, you could easily dismiss Verity fiddling with it as being a tic, or a stim. But once you know what’s up, you can’t unsee it. Gather the fact that Charles Boyer would have loved to have had access to that little gizmo. And it is quite something of how Verity could very well alter the very mavity of Earth if she so desired. The wink was a devious touch, and I lived for your reaction to that. Hell of a painting that Verity had as well. I so adored how you deep dived into it all. And how you note that Maria is probably speaking true that she really didn’t think much of Verity years ago. Like you said, from the bully’s perspective, they don’t fully consider ramifications. Objectively, yeah, you kind of are on both sides of the conflict. I found myself rooting for Verity more. She definitely overreacted, don’t get me wrong. Even so, mad respect for the game, it’s the Sith Lord in me. But as you observe, whilst Verity became quite villainous and vindictive, Maria is far from being a saint, nor an innocent party herself. I’d make a film comparison, but you’ve not seen the film, at least not far as I’m aware. Loved how Maria lunged before you could offer the comment. Your reaction to Maria blowing Verity’s brains out was quite something. And the ending, your reaction there, also, quite something. The ending, see, I think you got it compared to everyone else, or at least the comments I’ve heard. Comments I’ve heard have hailed the ending as a happy and victorious one. But you got it, I think. How Maria now has the power, and though she made the plea to Verity that you could alter past events so that none of what happened, happened, instead, she proves no better than, and might be worse than Verity. She jumped to empress damn quick, like you said, and with that smug smile at the end. You ponder what she would do to those she does not care for, and I wouldn’t put it past her to have her own vendettas, but that is left a mystery. If nothing else, this was a most fabulous one. You spoke of the fandom of this show being picky. I only have last season, and three of this season so far for frame of reference. (And I know I need to catch the one past episode to prepare for the one this season.) As this is like Twilight Zone, you assess by each episode. This one, however, is one I could see being one of the top three of this season. I have a prediction that there will be the two that I’m looking forward to will be the other two favorites, or at least I’m greatly anticipating who is in the episodes, if nothing else. Either way, we both really loved this one. Two more small notes. One, I’m already a notoriously picky eater, but even then, the foods Maria was coming up with just sounded awful, and from the sound of it Verity was saving her bacon on some of that, amusingly enough. Second, your moment of being irked when Verity, fresh out of the shower just sits on the bed without any sort of towel on the bed that we could see. Yeah, I don’t do that either, so I don’t begrudge you on that part bothering you. Like I said, great episode, with just a very terrific reaction, Jess, thank you.

My mind went to a short story by Jon Stewart, whose name I don't recall, that follows a guy planning to take revenge on all the people who bullied him at Prom, and after a while of building up why he hates them so much, once we finally get there it turns out every single other student was also using the occasion to take revenge on someone else.

I was pretty thrown by the day cards, which even with the very few episodes I've seen I'm pretty sure is not a regular thing for this show. My best guess is it was a homage to The Shining, though why this story in particular was chosen for that, I've got nothing. A very effective build here, from something you could buy as a computer nerd hacking the email server, to falling victim to a Berenstain Bears memory, to all reality having to change so there's apparently no such thing as allergies. But the key to all gaslighting stories is how well they can pull off the scene where the victim finally gets to say "I did it! I fucking nailed you! I've hated you for months, and now I have fucking evidence that you suck as a person!" And with this one, at first I was severely vexed. Few things piss me off faster than a story that seems to be saying revenge is always wrong and you have a moral imperative to forgive all wrongs done to you no matter how bad. The musical Color Purple movie was doing great until it went into that bullshit, and what's otherwise one of my all time favorite shows Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is marred by falling hard into it near the end. It's not for nothing that my favorite book is The Count of Monte Cristo, which strikes the best balance in the history of fiction of showing its protagonist isn't someone who you should be blindly cheering while also never once feeling like it's trying to make you ashamed of wanting to see his targets get what they so richly have coming to them. But then it manages to pull back out of that and stick the landing by making clear that however much Verity could be said to have gone too far in her revenge, Maria is also not at all what you could call a good person and her victory isn't something to feel good about. I like to imagine what happens from here is an All About Eve-style neverending cycle of one of her own victims eventually taking the pendant and becoming drunk with power themselves.

Yeah, there was none of the Kubrickian title cards last season, and I’ve not heard anything about it being a regular thing in seasons prior to that. Why this story was chosen for the Shining homage, beyond, you know, the slowly being driven insane thing, plus reality being altered like with the Fourth of July shindig, maybe the showrunners or writers just really like The Shining? They do have the good slow burn as we’re saying with the elements that are believable even if this was in a mundane setting, such as computer hacking and everyone somehow remembering a movie with Sinbad as the genie Shazam. The real tricky thing is with gaslighting stories, the payoff when the tormented turns the tables. Ingrid Bergman herself having one of the best cases of that, of course. I know that you’ve spoken of hating the treatment of revenge as something that is always wrong, no matter what. I agree to the point of I abhor the absolute with that, when there is zero nuance to any of it, if that is the route chosen in a revenge story. The Count of Monte Cristo does strike a superb balance with it. I also adore Sweeney Todd. Yeah, the ending brings it all home very well. Much though I found myself rooting for Verity more, like I said, she overreacted, taking things too far. Then after all the hints and build up, we see that Maria’s no better, and her “triumph” is not the type of thing to admire. I’d say you’re probably right that she’ll have the time as empress until some woman who calls herself “Phoebe” usurps the power. And the cycle repeats again and again and again. Rather interesting how it seems we both had Bette Davis films on the mind with this ending, and my two favorite films starring Bette at that. All About Eve is in my top five favorite films; I love it so much.
