I love that this episode gave that final speech to Sam. As funny as the Cas and Crowley scenes were, as dedicated as Dean is to the fight, I think that moment, where Sam is admitting the loss steals the show. He is the one who, out of all of them, understands Lucifer the best. Knows him in a way nobody else can, because of not only his possession by Lucifer, but also all the time he has spent in the Cage with him. He knows the threat Lucifer is when he has a purpose, but he has first hand knowledge of what Lucifer is like when he doesn't. The chaos, the anarchy that Lucifer can unleash, the pain and torment is something Sam experienced first hand for almost two centuries. and that hopeless, desperate, desolate expression on Sam's face says it all. Sam knows just how screwed they are, and Jared does an incredible job of showcasing it. Plus, the almost... tired resignation, the way his body just seems to know what is coming... exactly the way a victim of abuse might respond to having to be near their abuser. And, yet again, Sam is having to take on that torment. Of having to actively seek out his torturer, to hunt and fight him. The mental and emotional strain of that has to be taking a toll on him. And while Cas, and Dean, and Crowley have all suffered under Lucifer as well, you can tell there is a clear distinction between them and Sam in terms of the sheer depths of trauma. This is the equivalent for Sam, of Dean having to confront Alistair back in season 4. Except Sam's tormentor isn't dead, and they don't have any way to get rid of him. At least with Dean, he knows his abuser is gone. Overall, a solid, solid episode, but between Lucifer's unraveling descent into chaos, and Sam's utter futileness, Jared and Rick totally stole the show for me.

I just love the speech for how it really shows Sam’s compassion. How Dean seemed to express the view that saving Vince wasn’t likely to be an option, Sam still was of the view of he was a person and saving him would have been the right thing to do. Now he and others died that they could not save such as Tommy, and the one poor woman is scarred and traumatized for life. Sam takes no victory in this. Though I also do love how he kept those doors open and saved as many people as he could. Respect to his tenacity and bravery there. Good notes on Sam having the greater intimate knowledge of old Lucy compared to everyone else, and that thing of having to confront one’s abuser again. Contrast to Dean who has the tourniquet on that one. Despite it all, Sam keeps fighting. What else can he do really? And again, respect to him for his bravery.
