Nice job figuring out the full version of Syril's plan before it's laid out, which I didn't manage. A big laugh at the start as apparently they think all their problems are because of the ISB going rogue with stuff that Palpatine has no idea about. I would love so much to see Palpatine's reaction to that in the middle of the usual dull numbers reports from them. And thank god for the jump cut so soon after the lights went out. I was thinking "Rise already cursed us with the mental image of Palpatine having sex, don't add to that." I would personally flip my shit at suddenly seeing one of those spiders on my table, so of course his mother is completely into it. I knew you'd have things to say about Cassian's look here, and it gets better with him having to act like a callow prick who'd think nothing of treating a horrible massacre site from living memory like a fun tourist attraction. Another case where you fully get where both sides are coming from, and see the tragedy of them being unable to get their shit together when we know the whole time where this is going. I deeply felt that "No" when Luthen shows up at Bix's door, with Adria putting so much emotion into it that her natural accent comes out. He handled the situation better than I thought he would, which still isn't to say it was ideal. And we go on to see him at easily his worst, pitching a fit over the bug causing this problem after being about as useful as the one in the lamp in Tony Soprano's basement, rather than doing anything to fix it. Still, I'd be lying if I said I didn't get that frustration boiling over after he thought it was a bad idea in the first place. A lot of fun seeing you keep muttering how much Saw tests you, knowing the whole time where it was actually going. It's marvelous to see Forrest get this kind of scenery chewing speech, a bit reminiscent of his Oscar-winning work as Idi Amin, and the seemingly subconscious reference to Steela in the middle of it, for the first time in live action. Revolutions aren't for the sane, but they make for a hell of a story in the right hands, and this show is easily that.

Plenty of tension and buildup in this episode, yes. We both love the slow burn of it all. We juggle lots of plates in this episode. Start by talking about Luthen and Kleya. Kleya, as I said, she’s rising the ranks of favorites introduced in this show. My thoughts on Kleya are the same as what I said about the Fourth Sister in Tales of the Empire, which was, “I like a woman who’s a hard worker that takes her job seriously.” The situation of the bug being potentially discovered, it says a lot about the severity of the situation when she has some visible concern and actually yells at Luthen when he vents. Good catch on the parallel of the two of them drowning in intel, compared to the Empire drowning in their depravity and the rebel uprisings that come from that. The heart does break for Bix. Love it how Luthen clocks Bix’s fear as she jumps to the wrong conclusion as to the nature of his visit, and how he’s VERY quick to assure her that Cassian’s fine. The way Stellan plays it of Luthen sounds probably the kindest he’s ever sounded as he has that, “No, not that, not that.” line to Bix just adds to it. She is still in the deep darkness, self-medicating with the drugs and the trash television. Speaking of said trash television, quick sidenote, Ruby Wax having a cameo appearance in this series is most certainly unanticipated, yet it is also so hysterically delightful. The Ghorman situation is escalating. And they give us the clearer picture of this Tarkin Massacre. How he gave the order of “You may land when ready.” killing untold numbers of Ghormans. Information already known to the initiated. Albeit now, in the context of this season, it does feel rather tame compared to old Wilhuff’s historical reputation. It reads more as a statement, not a manifesto. Mayhaps, given the growing dread of the Empire’s interest in Ghorman, said manifesto is on the horizon. What, I wonder, is that to look like? A highlight of the reaction, unsurprisingly, is your reaction to Cassian having the fabulous wardrobe selection this episode. You are right about how you can get behind the two truths. The one truth being that the people are that fed up and are wanting to act. Yet, as Cassian notes, the math on this is simple: they are nowhere near prepared enough to pull off what they wish to pull off. Rylanz takes this to mean that Cassian is far less than what he was expecting. I would ask Rylanz what it is he really wants. Does him and his group wish to die trying to take the Empire down, or would they be aiming to just fuck shit up like Saw, more on him in a second. Certainly, they are operating with an interesting view of the galaxy when you have the scene of Rylanz saying how he and his resistance believes that our dear old Emperor has no idea of the atrocities transpiring on the planet and elsewhere in the galaxy. Such a statement makes a man let out a laugh like the one that Tom Hanks let out in The Money Pit after the bathtub was destroyed. Jesus did Sheev play everyone like a fiddle, like a goddamn fiddle. Further muddying the waters is Karn. You observe well how when feeding the Ghormans accurate information, that he, Dedra, and Partagaz are providing just enough glitter amongst the chickenfeed, which the Ghormans consume, and gain confidence, all according to plan. Your own words and assessments of that being terrific. Karn does further excellent work with the chicanery of protesting to the ISB sweep. Karn did well pulling an effective smokescreen, double bluff move. An XK Red 27 technique, if I recall. Dedra describing the situation of they are skeptically confident, I share Partagaz having the “Sensible answer.” response. We both had the strong response to more of Eedy. Karn still eating the goddamn fucking cereal had me roaring with laughter. Funny timing how Karn misses crossing paths with his prisoner #24601 again. Remind me, does Cassian even remember Karn all that much? Now to Saw. Saw who tests you all the time. Yes, but Forest kills it with Saw testing you. A fact you gave voice to as well, so that’s a win. Don’t think too many fans would be on your case about that given his part in the events that lead to Tech’s death. He had you on your toes with the Wilmon scenes. Wilmon, by the way, I believe, yes, the inference is that Wilmon learned from his dad, hence the reticence to answer the question. Saw pulled the bait and switch. Hard to expect anything of a concrete nature with Saw, so I wouldn’t worry about predicting his motives and movements, and how accurate said predictions are. Leads to that DAMN FINE speech. Talked with my brother who says that this might be one of his favorite scenes of the show. Elements of the details sound much like the treatment of POWs in Japan, so that’s extra horrifying. Saw acknowledging that he is batshit and observing how revolution is not for the sane is a great moment. He gets you right in the heart with referring to the rhydonium as his sister. Lot to unpack with the Steela of it all, and your own reaction got me good. This does presumably further explain the breathing troubles he had in Rogue One. We have the shared thing of whilst not condoning Saw’s actions, said actions are fascinating, as is the man himself, and you get exactly where he’s coming from. Like Kanan said when Hera mentioned Saw’s extremist reputation, “Considering his past, can’t say I blame him.” You can tell he sensed a kindred spirit in Wilmon, and I was most amazed at your reaction to Saw successfully radicalizing Wilmon. So, not a fun episode, like you said. It is Andor, so not surprising. Fantastic reaction all around, Jess, thank you.

I got about two thirds of the way there with Karn’s plan and was mostly just waiting for the fuller picture. See we both had the laughter at the idea of the Emperor being oblivious to the Empire’s atrocities. Someone should bring that to his attention during one of his spells of malaise when he’s accusing chestnuts of being lazy and asserting that he invented the question mark. Funny you should say that about the Dedra/Karn scene, “I do not want THAT image in my head!” as my brother mentioned much the same, bringing up what you brought up, and now he’s stuck with theories and headcanons cross pollinating that he’s now trying to cleanse from his brain. Cassian played the part well. Rotten thing of you get both sides and are just dreading the inevitable fallout of it all going to shit. Bix’s “no” does hit you. As I said, it says something when Luthen jumps quick to say, “Oh, shit, no, I’m not here for that!” Him ranting about the bug being as useful as the one in the lamp in Tony Soprano’s basement. He’s probably also jealous that one, the Empire doesn’t have Artie Piscano working for them, nor does he have access to the bug that’s in Piscano’s shop. Shared thing of getting his frustration boiling over after he thought it was a bad idea in the first place. Likewise, I get Kleya yelling back that he did agree to it, and how she’s wanting him to get his shit together. Yeah, Forest tapped into his Oscar win here. Shared amusement of Jess saying what she said, when we knew Wilmon would not die. The Steela reference just knocks the wind out of you. The revolution here is making for one hell of a story.

This version of the massacre is actually worse than in the novels, being a bunch of regular civilians in a place the ship shouldn't have been landing anyway, rather than protestors deliberately blocking the landing pad. And makes you wonder just how bad Gilroy is willing to let the actual event that will be called the Ghorman Massacre be. I can definitely see Dedra turning on Syril to save her own hide in the end, saying something like "I asked myself, where is he going at five to 7 with that sawed-off shotgun?" Given how the whole thing revolves around carefully working with gas that can kill you, I wouldn't have been quite surprised if Saw's big speech also included "Losers always whine about their best. Winners go home and fuck the prom queen."
