This is such a phenomenal Cas episode. I feel like in season 12, we are really getting into the histories of our characters, and seeing their growth over all, and while we have had some solid, solid episodes for Sammy on that subject so far, to have one for Cas is really refreshing. I love that we get to see what he was like before he ever met the Winchesters, and we are reminded of just what the angels used to be, what he used to be before the Apocalypse changed everything. And I love how we see both Dean and Sam's influence on Cas. With regards to Dean, Cas is stubborn, rash, but resolved and determined. He broke he deal, he doesn't regret it and damn the consequences. He is ready to face it head on, alone if need be. Just like Dean after he sold his soul, when he took on the Mark of Cain, when he went after Dick Roman. You see the soldier in Castiel coming out, both in terms of his strength and experience, but also in terms of his loyalty, and devotion. Dean is probably the most loyal person in the entire show, especially to his family, and we see Cas emulate that here. Both with his protectiveness of the Winchesters (defending them against Isham's verbal attacks, defending his actions saving them from Billy, etc), but also with Benjamin, with the angels he used to fight beside. He is fighting for his family in a way that is 100% Winchester. And then, you can see how Sam rubbed off on him with the way earnestness, and sincerity in that final speech to Lily. His accountability, his sympathizing with her, his utter humanity as he admits that he was wrong, and didn't know better. But also, his hopefulness. If Dean has the corner on loyalty, Sam is the single most hopeful character on the show. His ability to keep fighting, to keep moving, to keep his spirit going is completely unparalleled, as is his ability to take a seemingly impossible decision and make the right choice. To find a better way, the right way, no matter how hard it is, or how much it will cost him personally. His moral compass is off the charts, and his refusal to just do something because it "has to be done" when he knows that there is always another way is why he is the hero he is. Beating the devil and putting him back in the cage, curing those people from Amara's darkness disease in the beginning of season 11, fighting for Cas after he went all Godstiel, he always makes the difficult choice if he thinks it is the right call, and Cas choosing to keep fighting, to see if there is a better way forward with Lucifer and Kelly's kid than just killing them outright is a testament to how much Cas has learned from the youngest Winchester

Love everything you had to say about this one. I found Lily to be the most fascinating part of this. Alicia was great. She stands out as a Supernatural villain whom you can very easily sympathize with, then you find out that calling her a villain is a stretch. Sam’s hope comes through very strongly when he has his talk with her. You can tell she appreciates his words. And yeah, you see how Sam rubbed off on Castiel when he freely admits he was in the wrong, regardless of if he knew about it way back when or not. How he offers the hope that Lily will not pursue further revenge yet won’t offer resistance if she does. That was a great scene.
