Don't worry if you're having a hard time figuring this one out, because that just means you're going through the same thing as Colin. He went through this whole story totally unable to get a straight answer as to whether the Doctor was pulling some elaborate ruse, his brain was fried, or even that the whole thing had been faked by the Valeyard, since the script editor had resigned and everyone else on the crew had their own totally incompatible ideas. So he ended up just acting like it was the last and simplest one.

"Gentlemen, may I remind you this is a court of law, not a debating society for maladjusted, psychotic sociopaths.", The Inquisitor, "Mindwarp" It's a fun idea to have several stories within the Trial arc interleaved with the various courtroom interruptions. "Peri, a Warlord of Thordon wouldn't use his dying words to lie to us. Remember what he said? Thoros Beta, send more beams that kill.", The Doctor, "Mindwarp" I like the "in media res" idea that we've been dropped into an existing adventure - The Doctor and Yaz hanging from Karvanista's gravity bar at the start of "The Halloween Apocalypse" springs to mind as another case. "Doctor and, ah yes, your revoltingly ugly assistant. Age has not improved you since Varos.", Sil, "Mindwarp" It's the same writer as of "Vengeance on Varos" so he brings back Sil - much to sesskasays' obvious "delight". "That should keep you in marsh minnows for a while, Sil.", Kiv, "Mindwarp" Lord Kiv is played by Christopher Ryan. Later, Christopher would play the lead Sontaran in the "The Sontaran Stratagem" / "The Poison Sky" two-parter - so he is another Classic/New Who alumnus. BTW: He was also in "The Young Ones" TV series - along with Alexei Sayle, the D.J. from the previous season. "On my planet of Krontep, a warrior queen fights alongside her king.", "We're not on your planet.", "It doesn't matter, the rule still applies.", King Yrcanos and Peri, "Mindwarp" King Yrcanos is played by the wonderful, larger-than-life Brian Blessed. He's been in so much, but I suppose he is best known for his part as Emperor Augustus in "I, Claudius" - along with lots of other Who actors like Derek Jacobi, John Hurt, and Siân Phillips. Siân Phillips played one of the locals at the pub in "73 Yards". Brian Blessed was also in the "Flash Gordon" playing, well, playing a character in a very similar manner to King Yrcanos. Oh, and he was King Richard in the first season of Blackadder - the same character again. Go, Brian - three characters, one performance, three paychecks! "I have a special death reserved for him. He's a traitor known as the Doctor.", King Yrcanos, "Mindwarp"

There always is something strangely comforting about when you’re thoroughly baffled by a film or show, then you find out that even the cast and crew, in this case, Colin, was just as stumped as you were as to what the hell is going on with the plot and character. Proves you’re not alone, if nothing else. Oh, by the way, I came across these the other day. Maybe you already saw them, if not, you crossed my mind when seeing them and thought you’d get a kick out of them. https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fbizmgbmt7vve1.png https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fvvw8eb2dbuwe1.jpeg

Blessed was also among the many potential Second Doctors who were considered. And he wasn’t the only one who later got another role in the show, there was also the Black Guardian.
