No real surprise that Dina is really good with maps. Now we all need to join in helping Boots find the berries and looking out for Swiper (cards on the table, all I know about that show is from hearing Kevin Smith talk about it, so I might have been a bit off there). And it's very much appreciated that they're both smart enough to realize there's a very bad reason for the patrols to have that kind of hole, rather than the show trying to spring it as a surprise. Because the real biggest surprise is apparently Pearl Jam survived a whole decade after the outbreak if Ellie knows a song they made in 2013, at least until she hits her moment of "Oh, I made myself sad." Another fun bit of seeing you get so worked up over something we knew wouldn't be a problem. I was starting to wonder if that one Stalker (the game's name for the smart ones) was ever going to be referenced again, and it sure makes for a nice way to raise the stakes. Jesse (along with Tommy in the game) being able to find them is a notorious plot hole from the game, so it's a fun nod to see him give a half-answer that just raises further questions, in the same vein as Mulder and Scully having no idea how they got back from Antarctica. The whole encounter with Nora is exactly how it goes down in the game, with the one big exception of the spores having always been the regular way that Cordyceps spreads there. It's a very risky storytelling move they do here, best exemplified by how laughable it is when Shyamalan's Last Airbender expects firebending as it always works in the show to be a huge moment just because the movie nerfed it until now. And the best way I can come up with for why this works so much better is that the entire quality of the show has been at such a high level that we have the goodwill toward it to see this as a natural raising of the stakes rather than just adaptation incompetence. Followed by the clearly deliberately duplicated shot from Abby noticing those golf clubs before Ellie plays some outlawed songs on outlawed pipes. Your read of the whole thing is perfect, and I wish certain people who played the game had been able to get this out of it. Maybe they wouldn't currently be crying that their years of whining didn't make Druckmann say "Oh my god, you're right, I'll change this entire story." The final scene, well, it's one of those times where the change in format makes it come off really weird, but at the same time I can't think of any way to do it better, since ending on Ellie beating up Nora wouldn't quite feel right either to head into what the game fans know is clearly coming next week. You just have to bowl your way through it to get to the good stuff, and if they stick anywhere close to the original here, it's going to be very good indeed.

Yeah, I’ve heard some of those jokes. Saw some of the show years ago when I was with a friend’s family and there were little kids who liked to watch it. For what it is, I’ve seen worse shit, and it’s nice enough for the really young demographic. The references you made are about right. Whilst the girls are still too overconfident and reckless, yes, it is nice that they at least realize that there would be a reason for the gap in the patrol. Heard everybody mentioning that about Pearl Jam. I take it that the song was in the game, where the timeline presumably works. They always kept making Godzilla references in M*A*S*H, and the war ended before the first Godzilla film, so I am somewhat used to it. Ok, so the Deus ex Jesse is tame here compared to the game. That’s still pulling me out of shit, but that helps smooth it over. I was aware that the spores were always there in the game, which got changed for pragmatic reasons. Here, like you said, it feels a more organic evolution of raising the stakes. They have the good poetry with the stanzas of Abby and Ellie rhyming as Ellie demonstrates to Nora that she can be quite the piccolo player what with the fires stoking her need for revenge being piping hot. I am very much loving Jess’s read on this. Haven’t seen any other reactors see this one yet. I imagine at least some sound like the gamers of old. Interesting to learn that the final scene is from the game. Well, if next week contains what I’ve been dreading for weeks, I am not ready.

Nice way to introduce the spores with that opening section. Gamers know all about them, and in fact wondered why they weren't in the series in the first place. However, for filming purposes they dropped that, as you don't want your actors in gas masks all the time. Also spores are localised, whilst the tendrils can stretch underground for miles, seeking out people, like a predator hunting its prey, and thats far more terrifying to dwell on. Of course once you get to a patch of spores in the game, its never pretty; and this is done for good reasons too, one of which is the ending of this episode, which matches the game fairly well. Ellie dwelling on Joel in the theatre, and picks up the guitar to play something that brings back memories of him and her; which lead to a lovely scene in the game, one I feel is about to be seen next episode. She can't finish it though and we see she is keeping her emotions under wraps, barely. You better get used to the music playing Jess, it was done a lot in the game for the story beats. Thankfully for your Youtube stuff, its brief here. "let's go be reckless". Some are picking faults with Ellie stating that line, as they think she seemed more cautionary in the game; yet thats not true, she is very impulsive in the games, she also knows Dina is pregnant, and wants to find Abby quickly. It does fit with her character to a tee. She then comes to her senses briefly and asks Dina if she wants to go back, to which Dina gives her side of things, about her mother and sister. In the game she mentions when she sees someone tortured to death, that if she had her sister's killers in front of her, she'd do worse. She understands what Ellie is going through here, and supports her entirely, even at risk to herself and her unborn child. It IS reckless, and thats the point, but its also human to have that darkness inside us after being hurt, wanting to lash out. One thing I'm loving about the series, is that the infected are really dangerous. We see that here as the stalkers surround the girls; and that if you don't have an automatic rifle and some grenades on you - serious firepower - you are in extreme peril. Thats not always the case in the game, as you can set up tripmines, have shotguns, pipe bombs and sometimes a freakin' flamethrower to deal with the bigger ones like bloaters. So Jesse comes to save the day for Dina and Ellie. I was surprised to see him so soon, but the days in the game take a long time to get through, and yep he appears in Ellie's Day Two there also. We then get to the park, which is a terrifying part of the game where Ellie gets an arrow to her shoulder, but here its Dina in the leg, and I like what they did there, to get Jesse and Dina out of the equation, as Dina couldn't go with Ellie on Day Two in the game due to bad bouts of morning sickness. And then we see what a cracking bunch of cultists the Seraphites are, as they disembowel (thats the word you are looking for Jess) some poor sod. And as Ellie runs to escape, she sees the sign for the hospital and makes her "reckless" decision to go there alone. In the game, we see whenever Ellie is with Dina or Joel, they are anchors for her, so that she doesn't veer too much into her darkness. David in the first season brought a lot of that deep anger and rage at the world, that Ellie has inside her; and here we see it again rear its head as she predates on Nora. She is a creature of violence, born into a violent world - and like with Joel and Bill "god help anyone who stands in their way"... "What is this show doing to me?" - be thankful you never played the game, its brutal!!

Yeah, the difficulties with the gas masks were the primary reason I heard as to why the spores weren’t in season one. Nice theater that they were in. I seriously doubt that Ellie was more cautious in the game. She’s got that Arya Stark rage going, no wonder Ashley was in favor of Maisie playing Ellie, though Ashley has given full support and approval to Bella, rightly so. Dina sharing her backstory with Ellie is interesting to see. Though it’s difficult to call it a good thing, it is sort of sweet that she’s behind Ellie with this. Realistically messy and morally dubious. The infected would have to be dangerous if everyone takes the threat of them as seriously as they do. It is good to see that in action. Still bugged by the absurd coincidence of Jesse showing up when he did, though hearing that it was worse in the game makes me feel a little better. The disembowling keeps making me hear Anthony Hopkins in my head, which is inevitable I suppose when I love those books and films (Hannibal Rising aside, as I refuse to touch that one) as much as I do, and our dear old Hannibal Lecter being the very close second behind our beautifully wicked Emperor Palpatine for being my favorite character of all time. Absent her anchors, Ellie lets the beast run free. We saw it with David, though that motherfucker had it coming. I don’t doubt that from the rumblings I’ve heard over the years that we have more to come. But first, immense sadness next week from the sound of things. One area of that, I am NOT ready for. That is, if it is next week.
