Like I said at the start of this season, I cheat with this show and look up which are the few episodes that have decently happy endings so I can avoid the rest, and I was very happy to see this was one of them, because after years of imagining where these people could go from where we last saw them and never dreaming we'd actually get to see it, my jaw was on the floor when I saw this season's titles. And its being essentially a feature length movie is an amazing bonus on top. Most of all, I'm happy that Cristin Milioti gets to return to this role and do so much more with it. Just like Michael B. Jordan after The Wire, it was very surprising to see her become the most successful of the young actors from The Sopranos, and the way she's just exploded in the last few years has been a long time coming. I'd even go so far as to say she's the biggest thing to recommend about The Penguin, a show with no shortage of great actors with great material. On the same note, while watching Friday Night Lights I very quickly pegged Jesse Plemmons as having a bright future, and much like Matt Smith it's been quite a rewarding surprise to see him mostly springboard from that very likable character to one sociopath after another. The big thought I was left with after the last episode was that the real Nannette must have been left freaked as all hell to get that call blackmailing her to break into the apartment of a guy who later turned up dead and having no idea what it was all about, and I kind of wish this one had gone more into that. But at least it is acknowledged, and the story we do get is very hard to complain about. Especially how it directly attacks the dipshits who said Daly wasn't that bad because they weren't real people, all put in the mouth of one of today's greatest smarmy douchebag actors Jimmi Simpson. You mention that it's hard not to laugh at him despite how despicable he is, and it's great to see him get to dig so much into this side of his talent after years of the dead serious monster Dr. Hemlock. I looked it up and Michaela Coel did indeed have a scheduling conflict, though since I barely remembered most people from the original besides Cristin and Jesse I didn't find it too jarring. One that I did miss is that it would have been nice to get Aaron Paul in a larger role as one of the people they robbed, but I imagine he's way too busy these days. I'll definitely take what we got, and now back to my own imagination.

Very wonderful to see that you enjoyed this rather perfect companion piece to what could very well be your favorite Black Mirror episode. Great that barring the knowledge that this would be a sequel, you still went in relatively blind. Same here as I saw this right after finally seeing the previous episode, which was great. Not dethroning Eulogy as that’s presently standing out as the best episode of this show that I’ve seen, but I like hearing that the previous Callister episode is a most cherished episode for you, Jess. They set the tension well by showing how are digital leads have been struggling since escaping Robert’s hell. I did read that scheduling conflicts prevented an appearance from the not Uhura character, since you asked about that. Karl was a trying man, though he had a good moment or two, and his death does sting. The real-world Nanette, you want to give a hug. We also confirm that Robert died, which I assumed was the case. Loved seeing how your care for the digital leads remained strong. Elena is my favorite of the group. Her line deliveries were fire, such as that airlock line that you loved. The drama increased when Nanette was run over, and Walton’s despicable nature rears its head. A testing dilemma of loving one variant of a character and hating another variant of the same character. Both variants do have that type of voice that sounds like they’ll spill a sexy secret or two and they never do. Hilarious how the not likeable Walton’s subterfuge doesn’t last on account of him being such a gaping asshole. Quite something when likeable Walton is revealed to still be living. Complete with his very own Wilson. I was NOT prepared for your reaction to the hole in that rock, Jess, Jesus, did I laugh at that one. Nice how you got offended over not Wilson being used as a weapon. The real Walton does have the fantastic line reads, and glorious ham, even if you still keep yelling, “Oh, piss off back to fucking Tantiss, Hemlock!” It is also funny how he had to grovel to Kabir, who you were fairly close with the choice of words that Kabir wrote on the post it I do like how Elena pushes Nate to apologize to digital Walton. Tension really rises when we find the other digital Robert. You worried that you were being too judgmental. I don’t think you were, though it is amusing timing coming after the Close Encounters reaction where you questioned if you were a pessimist. It does show your kind nature that you did express sympathy for his situation, along with a degree of empathy for the loneliness. That aside, as you note, the psychopathy didn’t come from nothing. And he is Todd, after all. Yes, maybe Walton did exploit him. Maybe Robert got fucked over in the end. Perhaps. But like the digital Walton observed, Robert still did what he did, so fuck him to death, especially after he pulled the “nice guy” card. Yeah, a man loses practically all credibility when he says, “I’m a nice guy.” or some variation of that. Your own reaction at that point was life giving. And I know I’m venting some as I am SICK of that “nice guy” card as it infuriates beyond belief. I find that as I’m getting older, that’s becoming a bigger and bigger trigger for me. Loved your words of Nanette already contending with the lingering trauma, and then she has to confront her abuser. Red flags rise quick when Robert played the red floppy versus blue floppy test, and of course, you go with the blue floppy as that’s the one that has steak. Fantastic reaction you had to Robert snapping, followed by Nanette throwing the cutlass into his head. She gets the crew into real Nanette’s head, hell of a reaction there. Walton is left with the one code. Yes, I do believe the code means, “Get fucked, bitch.” with the asterisk reading, “The cavalry has arrived!” And our heroes get the happy(ish) ending that made you happy. Love to see it, Jess. Love how you’ve loved this season, and it was great sharing it with you, Jess, thanks for this reaction and all the reactions to this season.

In terms of episodes that have happy(ish) endings, the one prior to this, Eulogy, though it is the saddest episode, it does have a perfect bittersweet ending that surprisingly leans toward the sweet side of the equation. I would recommend giving that one a viewing if you like. Cristin Milioti has impressed me whenever she pops up. I’ve still not seen Penguin because I haven’t seen the Battinson film, and I seriously will not be able to take Batman seriously in that. Jesse Plemons is one who shined brightly early on and just keeps getting better. I am most interested in seeing him as young Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Hunger Games as Plutarch. You could have definitely gone further with diving into how traumatized real Nanette was. As you say, that part of the last episode is addressed, so it ends up not being too big a complaint. Oh yeah, it is very satisfying how the episode attacks those that defend Robert, and I LOVE how Jess did not defend him. Jimmi Simpson getting to ham it up is good, even if his voice still sounds like it will spill sexy secrets. Watching this makes me think that he could pull off Hemlock in live action. Memory was stronger on the characters given I watched the episodes back-to-back. Elena is my favorite of the group. This was a fun one.

Of course we both went straight to Hemlock, though he's pretty low on the list of roles I associate with Simpson. I could see Walton much more screaming "YOU WILL CALL HER!" Charlie Brooker clearly is tuned in to the whole nice guy thing, and I'm surprised he had the restraint to not have Daly randomly say "I have a black friend" in the middle of it. The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt had a pretty great scene mocking the hell out of this.
