As has probably been made incredibly clear by now, it didn't take long for Wil Wheaton to see this initially dream role become a hell of fan hatred which he couldn't even blame them for, given he also didn't think much of most of the writing he got. So at long last he simply asked to go, and they did their best to give him a worthy sendoff. Now, the actual story of the episode has serious issues; Dirgo is such a one note asshole and the fountain such an absurdly contrived plot device that you're constantly aware of the hand of the writer giving Wesley something of a final boss to overcome before he can head to greener pastures. But it's still a lot of fun because Patrick and Wil had built such a powerful bond in these three seasons and change, and they clearly are putting everything they have into giving it the climax it deserves. As a bonus, the episode introduces Boothby the groundskeeper of Starfleet Academy, who's become a much-loved piece of franchise lore that's actually borne out of a simple oversight in the writing, of how odd it would be that the guy who had that job while Picard was at the Academy would still be there now. So the legend of Boothby has now ballooned into him being seemingly immortal, having been at the Academy since it started and no one knowing what his deal is, but also not caring much because he's just such a great guy who always has the perfect thing to say to anyone who asks for his help.

Yes, I did strongly suspect that this would be an episode that you would greatly love, Jess. The sendoff for Wesley has now arrived. I forgot exactly when it was. I knew it was at least at or around this season. As Ryan mentions, Wil asked to leave given the backlash had gotten to him. He’s given a strong sendoff. Wonderful how you see Picard with what he was doing by having Wesley accompany him on this last mission. He will surely miss the young man. Our dear old Jean-Luc is indeed a rank sentimentalist, as we keep saying. And you do feel such pride in Wesley for getting the spot at Starfleet. First though, he and Picard need to survive the ordeal. You spoke well of although you know that Picard will be ok, they create the tense enough situation that you do feel the despair. Not helping is that the Enterprise cannot help as they have their own dilemma to deal with. I KNEW, Jess, that you would find “Do you have a better idea, Geordi?” to be quite the stupid question. Gates gets you bad with the BARELY restrained panic that she will lose her son and Picard. Beverly definitely can multitask, and it’s also that thing of the job or work is the distraction; it gives her an occupation, lest she go mad, I know the feeling. I like how you were kind to Dirgo, as yeah, at first, he’s not TOO bad. As the episode goes on, he does test the nerves a mite. His death was horrific. The big emotional crux of both episode and reaction is the Picard and Wesley scenes. Patrick and Wil being so brilliant. Gets a man bad enough already. Seeing your own emotional reaction to that, it gets me even worse. Just how it does serve, as you say, a perfect culmination of the growth that the two characters have gone through is so great. One area it shines is through Wil’s performance as Wesley, more specifically, how he pleads to Picard to not die. How Wesley keeps calling Picard “Captain” or “Sir” in this highly stressful situation. He keeps saying that, yet when he’s saying it here, I just keep hearing him say “Dad”. The show never even really makes anything much of it, yet it’s there. The sobbing is strong with that one. And Wesley stepped up, saved the day. Not surprised, but proud of Wesley is a succinct description. Gets you even more when Beverly arrives and has the scene with Picard and Wesley both, and again, your own reaction just exacerbates the tears. Leads to that beauty of the final shot of the episode. Seriously, Jess, everything you had to say about this one was even more wonderful than I was anticipating. As to the heat, yeah, it’s heating up lately. Sorry to hear that it got particularly bad on that day of filming. You liken it to an oven. Better the room feeling like an oven than a kiln; I’ve experienced that one before. In any case, I feel the characters’ pain as you did. One area it stood out was Picard being bald. Picard definitely needed cover from the sun for his head which I felt that. Jesus, does it fucking HURT when your head gets burned to the point that your scalp feels like it’s made of leather. Just such a beautiful reaction, Jess, thank you so much.

One odd benefit to the Wesley backlash is that it set the bar so high that when finally seeing Wesley, you found him nowhere near as awful as everyone kept selling him as. Helping is Wil’s shown a good sense of humor about it in more recent years. You do wish that fans held the view of Wesley that Jess has shown. Dirgo is a testing man. The fountain feels more contrived for the reason of we never really get any answers about why it’s even there to begin with, and what even is protecting it. Even then, Wesley put in the work. And all of it works so well by having Patrick and Wil deliver in their performances. That is hilarious about Boothby.

And this wouldn't be the last time Patrick pranked someone by acting angry that they were late, since there's that 1999 Christmas Carol movie. The scene has honestly always bugged me and every time I watch one I'm hoping they leave it out. Here in New Jersey we had a really hot April, but May has been pretty nice.
