"What isn't completely uncharacteristic is this resort to excuses and subterfuge. To gloss over the death of Peri, the Doctor conveniently presents us with another companion.", The Valeyard, "Terror of the Vervoids" An interesting time jump from the previous episodes - with a new companion ... "Twenty three, twenty four, twenty five ...", Melanie, "Terror of the Vervoids" It's Mel! It's Mel! It's Mel! - Melanie Bush - played by Bonnie Langford. Bonnie was a child actor and dancer who had been on UK TV screens and in theater productions through the 70s and 80s - over-present if anything, almost to the level of a joke that you couldn't turn on a TV screen without seeing her on it. I imagine this was a celebrity casting by JNT - but she is great fun in it. Fun fact which I only just discovered: Bonnie was the first companion actor to have been born after Doctor Who began in 1963. "Now, I'll go first. We don't want you breaking your neck. At least, not until ...", Edwardes Fun fact #2: For the cliffhangers, Bonnie was asked to scream in a key which merges perfectly into the closing Who theme. And she does have quite a scream on her! "Let's exercise the grey cells for once, shall we, rather than the muscles.", The Doctor, "Terror of the Vervoids" A murder mystery - excellent! And we have "grey cells", and later we see Professor Lasky reading "Murder on the Orient Express". They are kind of rubbing the Agatha Christie vibes in ... hm ... whatever happened to her? "Simply a bromide.", "Enzu", "Terror of the Vervoids" That's a nice whodunnit-style giveaway - not using the translator gives away a disguised character. "Or why it is that every time you appear on the scene, people begin to die?", "Hey, I don't care who you are, you've no right to say that to the Doctor.", Travers and Melanie, "Terror of the Vervoids" This story was written by Pip and Jane Baker. We last saw them with killer tree-mines in "The Mark of the Rani". The Rani ... hm ... whatever happened to her? "Now, before you go rushing off, Mel, do you know what a Judas goat is?", "Er, yes. It's a decoy goat that's tied to the stake to lure the tiger out into the open.", The Doctor and Melanie, "Terror of the Vervoids" No, that's not the meaning of "Judas goat". "Am I expected to trust my life for millions of millions of miles to a bunch of incompetents who can't even get my luggage aboard without losing it?", Professor Lasky, "Terror of the Vervoids" It's Honor Blackman! Best known as Cathy Gale from the "The Avengers" or, the role you have seen her in, Pussy Galore in the James Bond film "Goldfinger". Of course, another "The Avengers" actor, Diana Rigg, was also in Doctor Who ("The Crimson Horror") and was another Bond girl. "At my age, one doesn't like to be reminded of mortality.", Kimber, "Terror of the Vervoids" Kimber, the nice old man who gets attacked in his cabin was played by Arthur Hewlett who we've seen before in "State of Decay". "This is a situation that requires tact and finesse. Fortunately, I am blessed with both.", The Doctor, "Terror of the Vervoids"
