I have to start out a bit off-topic, since we just found out the role that Diego is following Andor with, and the psychotic bastard is doing one that'll get him directly compared with one of the most universally beloved sacred cows in acting history, Raul Julia. And the trailer very much makes me want to see it right the hell now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBFF7i8QGD0 I've never been one for the Star Wars novels, but this got me to check out Dark Disciple, and maybe it was all the build-up from the horrified outrage at The Bad Batch seemingly retconning it, but I found it a real letdown with maybe the most confused portrayal of the Force and the Dark Side in the franchise's history. Plus, after a whole seven seasons of nary a hint of romantic interest from Ventress, I'd settled pretty well on her being ace representation and it was jarring as hell to read about her having the hots for Quinlan. But it was all worth it for this. Some fans more obsessive than me have determined this is all set after her appearance in Bad Batch due to some pieces of tech, so it's nice that we don't have to worry about this friendship falling apart. It has the classic start of them all, not getting along in the slightest with Ventress constantly wanting to shout "Lyko, go get it!" (yes, I went back in time for that one). But fighting an Inquisitor together is always a great team-building exercise. Also a neat casting gag as her boss is the actor from a character in Resistance who was originally supposed to be an elderly Ventress before they changed their minds and just made her someone new. Not much to really talk about in the second part, which is just a standard action story, though Ventress going Buster Keaton with the hole in the sphere was a lovely touch. The third is where we get the best material, and for a while I was wondering if I was supposed to recognize this guy from Clone Wars, but it was a much better decision to have him just be a random grunt like so many others out there dealing with their PTSD from the war. The brief runtime means there's not much space to delve into it, but they do nicely with what they have. There's been speculation that these episodes were meant to test the waters for Ventress and Lyko getting their own show, and I'm completely in support of that, especially if it means finally getting to see her in live action (at the moment I'm leaning towards Mikey Madison for the role). And as nice as all this was, I still found it the weaker half of this set, so you have that to look forward to.

Heard about the remake, had not heard about the casting of Diego. Seeing your comment made me say, “Oh, Diego’s playing Raúl’s character? Shit! That sounds amazing!” I heard horrified outrage from both fans of the book, and the relief from those that did not like it. One of my brother’s oldest friends, after the Bad Batch trailer dropped, asked if I was aware of the book, I said yes, I read it. This meme sums up things well: https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2F5r5f8ubmh1ec1.png Yeah, I more often than not hear the rather negative reception to Dark Disciple. I rather liked it well enough; I get the problems it has, and that fans have with it, to be clear. One area that I do really like is how it does showcase that the Jedi really did sink to some lows as the war went on, and just how it further validates the Emperor’s justification of the Jedi turned traitor. Perfectly fine if people don’t like the book. The ace representation, yeah, I get how it’d be the disappointment: That after what would be six seasons in the timeline prior to this book, after nary a hint of romantic interest from Ventress, it IS a bit odd that she falls for Quinlan. For the ace representation, you do still have Nebula which is a big plus. Could have been worse, given the Obi-Wan/Ventress ship that’s still rather popular. Like how the opening largely satisfies all parties in that the book is kept canon, and although the ending is reversed, they find a good way to keep the cost of the ending. See your note on James Arnold Taylor, and I too assume that keeping things simple is why he doesn’t voice Obi in the opening. Plus, it hammers home the seriousness of the situation if Obi-Wan is not being sassy as Jess always loves. Thought this was before Ventress appeared in The Bad Batch, and we just did not see Lyko as Ventress left him behind, say with Fennec, when she went to see the batch and Omega. It works either way being vague enough that all you need to know is that it’s post Order 66, and still in the early days of the Empire. Had to look up that commercial, don’t remember that one. Ventress and Lyko fighting the rather impressive Inquisitor does wonders for kick starting a friendship. Still not gotten to Resistance. Would love to share it with Jess, though I doubt it would get strong viewing numbers on her channel. Then again, Jess has been mentioning that Star Wars might be exempt from the low numbers chopping block like other shows are. Ventress did get the good Buster Keaton moment. Figured you’d like the last episode of this arc a lot. The Separatist, yes, far as I’ve been able to tell, is a new character, and they explore the themes of the post Clone Wars shell shock well, particularly the examination of both sides having been pawns for the Emperor. Though nothing’s been announced, I was under the impression that a Ventress spin-off was coming, hopefully tied with more of the Lyn and Barriss storyline. I’ll take more of Ventress and Lyko somewhere down the line, definitely take more of Lyn and Barriss, provided the latter lives still, which I surmise that she does. Would hope that Mikey could nail the voice of Ventress if cast, though the idea does sound pretty good. Would also need to shed the default image I still have of Mikey from the FX show Better Things. Still need to see Anora too. But yeah, she’d be good for Ventress. Of the Tales shows, this one’s at present last, though I had a great amount of fun with both arcs in equal measure. The Count Dooku arc is still my favorite thing from this Tales series. Looking forward to your thoughts on the second arc of this series.

I'm glad you all enjoyed this arc (I do like the second one but we'll get to that), but I struggled with this; however I should give it another view perhaps with Jess here and her reactions, and hearing what everyone here is saying. Now I'm typing this before I rewatch, hopefully over the weekend as I'm having a dreadful week and its going to continue into next week at least, so not had time for much, aside from Taskmaster. I'm a big Filoni fan so was disappointed this was the path he went down with Ventress. We do know that there was going to be an 8 episode arc to finish her story in Clone Wars, that was almost got greenlit before Disney took over and it got cancelled. Instead Filoni, Katie Lucas amongst others, ended up putting pieces together and it all then got mashed into a novel by Christie Golden called Dark Disciple. That explains the start of this, where that novel finishes. When I heard Ventress was going to be subject to a Tales Of arc, my fear was that a lot of this would get skipped over, and unfortunately it did. I haven't read the novel admittedly, as I think it sounds like soap opera trash, though a lot do seem to love it, but to not even get the barest bones of what went on and how she ended up dead on Dathomir in Quinlan Vos's arms, for those who don't know this story or of it; is egregious from our beloved wolf lover, imo. Now, having said that, we do know there is a Maul series coming next year, so if they can do something similar with Ventress in a mini-series, to retell Dark Disciple a bit differently, akin to Last Of Us, in the coming years, I will once again kowtow gladly to Mr. Filoni; but in the meantime, to pair Ventress up with an Ezra type kid as a buddy trope, is a misstep for me. I don't mind the kid, but this is far from the Ventress of old force-pulling people into her lightsabre and kissing them as they died! Of course she isn't that anymore, and I was overjoyed with what they did with her in Bad Batch, having her as a kind of darker side Yoda with Omega - I loved that! However if this is the path they are going on, for me its a head-scratcher. That's not to say they can't do good things with her and the kid down the line, perhaps they can help each other in different ways, as Kanan and Ezra did when they teamed up wonderfully; so I hope that can be the case. I will say though that although Rebels is my favourite SW animation aesthetic; the stormtroopers here look amazing in comparison to the lower quality models in Rebels back then. Also that was a great set-piece on the ball thing! I will give it another go over the weekend, and see if my mind gets changed, it wouldn't be the first time!

That’s fair. There was quite a bit of that when going through Chibnall’s era of Doctor Who. Certain episodes, you even outright said, “Ok, Chibnall, I’m going to have to stop you right there. What the hell are we doing with this?” Going through the show with Jess helped sort out feelings and made you appreciate some stuff better. And with that era of Doctor Who, she said there were a few spots where she struggled too, so you didn’t feel too bad. Sorry to hear you’re having a bad week by the way. Hope things get better. I’m aware of the Ventress and Darth Maul arcs that, from the sound of it, the two arcs, combined with the crystals on Utapau arc, would have been a whole season. Dark Disciple being the end result of putting together the original plans for the Ventress arc. The whole story getting kicked off by you ask Mace Windu, “What was that about Jedi don’t assassinate anyone, that it’s not in their character?” It was a hell of a jolt with this arc being very Cobra Kai and showing no mercy to those not familiar with the book. Sort of found it amusing too, not unlike with Ahsoka where one is rather lost if you never saw Rebels. The laughter of the fans being so confused there was strong. I say that, and my brother and sister in-law did follow along with Ahsoka well enough. Me, friends of my brother, our cousin, helped fill in some gaps, plot-wise, and character-wise. And the stuff like how my brother gathered about Sabine where it was not an entirely accurate surmise, I said, “Eh, close enough.” Here, it is a stronger punch of Filoni practically saying, “Good luck if you didn’t read Dark Disciple!” As I say, I’ll take a Ventress series, preferably tying into the Lyn and Barriss storyline. With that, and the Darth Maul show, I’m worried if Filoni will continue to the thing of every five years hitting us with pain and trauma cycle that, thus far was Satine, Kanan, and Tech. I liked the teamup of Ventress and Lyko. Sure, maybe not the greatest thing in Star Wars, but fun enough. Helping is that Ventress is still largely a surly sort more than Joel was with Ellie. (She’s also a lot more honest than Joel and doesn’t lie nearly as much as he did. Which fits as those of the Dark Side, they lie a LOT less than reputation would suggest.) Ventress, true, is not QUITE at the level of, as Jess describes, Bad Bitch as she used to be. And here, she does seem to be written with a softer touch than even in Bad Batch. Still, I enjoyed this, had a good time. And like you are saying, the door is open for this to have some really good stuff down the road with the beautiful friendship of Ventress and Lyko. Good note on the look of the Stormtroopers. Again, hope you enjoy the rewatch, and later, the reaction that Jess had.
