I have to say, I´m not easily shockeed by stuff I watch, but Mels death and the consequencial death of her baby really got to me.

The scene was tough. Made worse by there being the concern for Jess, and though she handled it well enough, aided by it not being as bad as it could have been, I still wanted to give her a hug seeing how badly it was getting to her.

First of all hearing some of the subtle themes of the second game's music throughout, hits all the notes perfectly, in more ways than one! I even got my "thump thump thump" (taken from 'The Hunt' song that for some reason isn't on the standard soundtrack) score as well, though still not as overwhelming as the version in the game. Secondly the set dressing of Last Of Us is always outstanding, but it really pinged this episode, from seeing the dressing room, to the little book store, and when Jesse and Ellie are chatting outside, it just adds so much atmosphere to the world, and ties in with the game aesthetic perfectly. Ellie recognising she's going too far (to echo Joel's father, Javier) especially with Nora, suggests she knows that this is new to her and she is afraid she is losing herself, which is the case; she is becoming Abby when she tortured Joel to death. In the game we see by her demeanour and way she talks that she's becoming distant with everyone, and we are seeing that here in the series with Bella's Ellie. She "is lost in the darkness". I do like the addition of her telling Dina all the stuff about the Fireflies, why Abby did it, the cure etc. She's trying to justify the reasoning for this path, but Dina, especially with the state she is now in, is now looking to stop this before it goes further, down a path of which there is no coming back from. I appreciate Jesse being pissed of at Ellie here. From the beginning (and as I thought he voted against this) he's recognised the folly of risking people to get one person, even if it was for Joel. He's of the opinion of Tess "save who you can save", and just wants them all to get the hell out of there now, especially with Dina's injury and pregnancy. Ellie is a hothead, and this journey they are on can do no good, and only end in failure or death, even if they do manage to kill Abby. Yeah I wondered when we saw Isaac earlier how we didn't see any of Abby with him, as in the game during all his scenes, she's present, and he saw the potential in her since she was according to him "his top Scar killer". With her not being here now as the WLF set out to take out the Seraphites once and for all, he wanted his top Lt. with him; alas she isn't around, and perhaps isn't the leader he seeks, though she could be. Ellie picking up the comic harks back to the first game, and season where we heard her with Sam speaking about them. She is dwelling on Dina's child, and it also reminds us that it wasn't long ago she was running on top of dinosaurs and taking space flights with Joel. She is still a kid, but is very confused about her identity and place right now, and she's using this vendetta to try to move on from Joel and rediscover who she really is; but its the wrong way, and the payment is soon to be due for all of them. Some nice foreshadowing in the background for what we'll see later when Ellie is on the boat. She capsizes in the game but manages to swim to the aquarium. Here though, she has a little detour with those friendly Scars, where even infants want to kill outsiders. How lovely! Fortuitously Isaac's attack saves her from a very nasty demise. While people may not see the point of this scene, its setting up more of what we'll see in season 3. Well Owen and Mel's death scene is different, but probably even worse than the game! Mel is a lot meeker and more likeable than game Mel and she doesn't deserve this, nor does her unborn child. Not saying that game Mel didn't either, but it plays out a lot differently there - but I understand why they didn't go down that route, especially with the flak Bella's Ellie gets, and it would have been worse, especially with what happens before in the game also (I know I'm being infuriating here comparing with the game for the tv only viewers, but I'm weirdly enjoying seeing the differences play out with the same story). This is just horrifying however; a path set on by Joel, then Abby and now Ellie; and now we see that Nora, Mel and her unborn kid, Owen and Jesse have now been killed because of all this. And now Ellie is going to meet Abby whether she wants to or not, as she now comes seeking for them... Oh and Abby is RAGING! I love it! Kaitlyn Dever was only in this season for a short time, but my god she was mesmerising. Seeing her in that coat standing over Tommy with Ellie at her mercy, man she looked such a badass - that definitely felt like game Abby, and I got shivers as Kaitlyn sounded so like Laura Bailey's version with her "STAND UP! WE LET YOU LIVE!!!". I also got shivers seeing Seattle : Day One from Abby's pov; as that meant so much in the game, and now its a Rashomon situation, seeing her three days. Many will wonder why, and may not want to do this, but its so worth it, and Kaitlyn is going to be superb, especially if they do half of the things that many game lovers are excited about. Just a shame we won't see the third season for another two years!! Ah well, just need to go back to the game then!! :)

Good to hear you’re getting the music cues from the game in this. Speaking of the music, I pulled Ashley’s cover of Through the Valley off the internet a few days ago. Good stuff. God bless her. The set design has been very well done. Ellie is in that Anakin/Walter White/Targaryen mindset of knowing she’s going too far, (though she is still tame compared to Lalo,) yet she lacks the full self-awareness, or skill to prevent the abyss from gazing long into her. Nice to hear you and Ryan say that the one Dina scene was new. Dina is surely feeling the enormous weight of what the quest will cost. As I said, I like how we leave it unclear if Dina’s jumped on the “Joel did nothing wrong” train. Seen one or two reactors do it, and though everyone’s free to form their own opinions and conclusions, the oversimplified narrative does irk some. And Dina’s uncertain response follows nicely with how she gave Abby a benefit of the doubt that Joel had to have done something to warrant Abby having the revenge that she had, whilst still not condoning Abby’s actions. There was some cheering Jesse on with him being pissed off at Ellie, letting her know, in no uncertain terms, that she’d fail the Kobayashi Maru test so miserably. Jesse is living by that Tess philosophy and is wanting to get the hell out of dodge. Ellie, yes, she’s hell bent on going after Abby. She really wants to see The Monster at the End of This Book, as was foreshadowed by her picking up the book of that name. Dummy like me who hasn’t played the games, and I can see what they were saying by having the very pointed moments of Ellie picking up that specific book. Isaac hoping that Abby could be what he wants her to be, yet she subverts his narrative somewhat. Lot like how Joel wants Ellie to fill the void of Sarah and that doesn’t quite work out the way he imagined. Ellie is in that quagmire with her identity at the moment, good notes there. Those Seraphites are quite the hospitable bunch. For immediate purposes, I saw the scene as hammering it in that nowhere in Seattle is safe for our Wyoming protagonists. I have been hearing about how the show’s presentation of Mel and Owen’s deaths have the sharper punch compared to the game. As I referenced Unforgiven in my own comments: Deserve’s got nothing to do with it. I swear the creatives behind the games and show have that film on the brain. So long as you guys keep mum on spoilers, I don’t mind the comparisons of the game versus the show. Particularly when you guys mention the improvements that the show has done. The endless cycle, like how Baylan described, proves most vicious here. One can say what they want of Abby, and I know that people have, she showed some damn fine skill in that ending. Proving the nice little picture that if Ellie wants to kill her, she’s damn well going to need to work for it. (Provided she lives past this point, of course.) The pure fury that Kaitlyn put into those lines, Lord does it make a man really become far more intrigued in seeing more of her as Abby. Ask and you shall receive as yes, I hear everybody anticipating Abby’s season, and with you saying there’s the Kurosawa in there, so much the better. Sure, I’m imagining some people are just abandoning the show if Abby gets her own season. Well, they’re welcome to that rather miserable sounding decision. But I am ready for The Book of Abby. I’m going to enjoy it. Once we get to two years from now.
