Picard: What do you want with me? Ardra: I must wander the known universe and my mission is to share what I am with Picard. Picard: Get lost! Ardra: Rowwr! Hey Tiger! Picard: From what I see it’s been overshared. Ardra: Meee- owwww! Picard: Look, just leave to my book. All I want is peace and I want no piece of you! Ardra: You don’t find me . . . desirable? Woof! Picard: Hmmph! I find you far too obvious! Ardra: Cock-a-doodle-doo! Would you rather I was a Vulcan? Picard: Get off my ship! Ardra: Baaaaa! - disappears. Picard: Computer! Air freshener. Place was starting to smell like a damn zoo! Ardra: (V.O) Oink!

We just finished The Trial of a Time Lord and then we get a TNG court episode straight after. Imagine if Ardra turned out to be The Valeyard. I'd love to see a Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover episode someday. The irony of the opening of this episode is that Patrick Stewart played Ebenezer Scrooge in the 1999 version of A Christmas Carol. Ardra choosing to impersonate Deanna in Picard's quarters was a clear indicator that she knew nothing about him. For Picard, the love interest for him on the crew was Beverly. If she was truly Ardra, she would have seen right through him and appeared as Beverly. The script for this episode was written for the TOS crew. The producers had to pull it out of mothballs because of a writers' strike in effect at the time of production. WGA rules say they can use scripts for which someone has previously been paid. But they can only superficially adapt it to other characters and settings. Anything beyond that is considered writing new material, which is breaking strike. That's why Troi receives such short shrift in this story. There was no direct counterpart with her abilities in TOS. So, a plot point using them would be new material.

A Star Trek/Doctor Who crossover would be grand, yes. Picard directing Data in A Christmas Carol after Patrick had started his one-man show of the story, and years before the 1999 film adaptation, makes that scene one I really like. Best part of Ardra assuming the form of Deanna rather than Beverly is how the episode never spells out where Ardra messed up. It just counts on the viewer to know the score, and the scene is done very well. That is true that Deanna has little to do in this episode, which, as you note, there is no real direct counterpart to her in the original series. I do like how she does get the small moment when the crew ponders if Ardra is Q, how she notes that Q wouldn’t bother with economic forecasts, and Picard notes that he noticed that too. They also sell that Ardra is a formidable opponent when Deanna also notes that Ardra has a very focused mind and that it was hard to sense much of anything. Which could also be a stealth insult in the latter point.
