This episode aired 3 weeks before the premiere of Encounter at Farpoint, the premiere episode of Star Trek The Next Generation. This is the era that Doctor Who's low budget really started working against it as people were seeing what could be accomplished on television on Star Trek compared to what the BBC was doing with Doctor Who. Just compare the opening credit sequence of this episode to Star Trek the Next Generation. As much as I love Doctor Who, I have to see where it could start to look embarrassing by comparison.

Hello! [Doffs hat] I have only recently discovered your reactions but have been doing "Box set binge watches" of them since, picking out lots of favourites and important eras. I am absolutely loving the comments and observations. I then found that you were just coming up to the "Trial" era and later and felt I had to subscribe as this is when my era kicked off, and while time is now short for the classic era there are still some real goodies and exciting, jaw-dropping things yet to see. That and the fact I recently watched the Mara story reactions and I really felt like you showed real perseverance watching something you have a phobia of. I rewatched this story last year having not seen it since its original broadcast in 1987 and I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would or how I felt about it back then. It's uneven in all kinds of ways but somethings in it do come off and work much better than I had recalled, including the practical visual effects. It's strange following these reactions as the casting of a new Doctor and regeneration stories were all over the news back in the day and the only mystery would be how the Doctor would end up in a state where regeneration would be necessary, so it's fascinating seeing someone so passionate about the show come to them so cold and get the full impact of the surprise.
