I take full responsibility for any typos and mistakes because I'm really, really tired.

I'll be sorting out the Big Edit for the second book and finalising the preorder date soonish.

Alyson! I'm so sorry it took me literally 2 months to finish this astounding chapter. As always, you have a way of writing that lets us experience a story from multiple perspectives, which is so great to have. I feel like I'm watching an amazing HBO series -- it's just so, so good. I'm always blown away by the way you write. The emotions, the connections, the conflicts, the characters, the themes... it's all there in every new chapter. I love that we see so many different characters, that we see such a wide variety of events, that you are able to write so many different points of view. You're doing an amazing job! Okay, as for my favorite parts... I guess I'm basic, but it continues to be Aaron and Stef, the romance between them. I just love them so much. I love how they're growing and changing in so many ways. Aaron tried on a bra! It's a small thing, but for him it's huge. Also, Valerie is just utterly fascinating. Her story, her life... just ugh. The contrast between her and Bea is so powerful. I know eventually they'll meet up again and I just CAN'T WAIT for that! I already have a scene in my head for how these two interact after what they've both gone through... and it is DRAMATIC. Oh! And I really loved the reintroduction of Will. Sooo well-handled, and Adam's emotion was so raw. I can't wait to see what becomes of Will. You have me rooting for him!!! So, in short, yet another amazing chapter and I'm dying to see more. Luckily for me... I have more chapters to read AND time to read them. 💖

Another wonderful chapter and things are really starting to develop. Very much looking forward to seeing how things develop from here. Lovely to see Val so soon, even considering what she's dealing with. I'm honestly surprised she never tried to burn the house down, but after 30+ years of it, this is just how her life is. Declan might shake her out of her apathy though, and the PMC guys are *missing* so who is playing games there. Callum was read in entirely by Val,will he have a crisis of conscience? Only time will tell. Stef and Aaron are adorable, as are Paige and Christine. Who still thinks she will leave Dorley hall some day, poor girl. Julia and Yasmin are going to be very disappointed when the pandemic probably disrupts their ability to leave. The origin of the mugs, what a lovely scene at the end there. Glad Bea found some support while she was escaping.

“You really are a bunch of bloody trans women, aren’t you?” Lorna says, and snorts, undignified but unbothered about it, into her closed fist. “Straight from, ‘Hello!’ to, ‘A horrible thing happened to me on the way to the gender this morning.’” “Guilty,” Vicky says. God, Alyson, you can't just drop fucking callouts and subtweets like this.

Carrie

Oh god poor lil babie Bea but also but tired momma Bea but ALSO Val you found a weak link in the chain work that shit girl!

Carrie

ALSO love to see Steph just aggressively befriend Will, tear em up

Excellent chapter, there was so much happing this time! Also, I genuinely appreciate you posting it just after I went to sleep so I couldn’t screw up my sleep even more by reading it all night 😄

alysongreaves

All part of the plan, definitely! I didn't simply stay up too late finishing it in a caffeine-based haze 😅

Excellent chapter once again! Despite no new name for Aaron things are happening in the basement! Steph and Aaron are too freaking cute, Will is back and Steph is still playing mother hen. But I really want to talk about Bea, god Bea…she has been through hell and back. She really has become one of my favorite characters in this whole tale, and the backstory given here after her escape from Dorley is incredibly well done! She’s been saved by trans women more experienced than her and the origin of the mugs! I can’t wait to see what more comes from Bea and her life before the Dorley coup.

Rachel Ashley

God, Bea finding a family hit harder than I was expecting. I know people like that... You love to see a little trans resiliency.

Rachel Ashley

Also Aaron and Steph are almost disgustingly sacarine. Of course Aaron's a wife guy!

How do I get to Chapter 1?

Andi

Oh my gosh, the first mug!

Allie c

Is the "a round tuit" mug here the same mug as the one that showed up earlier with christine drinking from it?

Bri

Yay for more Yasmin. One of my faves of the tertiary cast, she's a great foil to Christine. It's interesting to see her argue she wasn't a victim while so clearly holding a grudge about the whole thing. Most of the graduates hold some form of a guilt complex about the whole thing so I understand why one would make such an argument, but I don't think it holds any real water. Everyone from her to Will to Christine to Aaron thinks that because they 'deserve/d' the abuse they received from the hall that they just have to stiffen their upper lip and take it. That just because they're penitent for their transgressions they can't be upset with the transgressions against them. It's honestly tragic. (Also, it's sweet that Christine thinks she'll leave. Sorry bby, you're so good at this you *accidentally* got the first volunteer basementee, you're going to be there forever.) Using my incredible foresight abilities, 'My girlfriend and I are leaving in march of 2020' gives me strong 'Grizzled old sergeant who loudly announces he's retiring after this one last job' vibes. Those two, Em, Shy, and a half dozen other stragglers are 100% getting stuck in the Hall when Covid hits. It's going to be a chaotic mess and I can't wait. The Valerie PoVs are solid too. I don't have too many thoughts yet because I am unsure how it's going to progress, but her tear at Callum was *so* satisfying. I instantly pictured him as any number of men I've met who were friends with misogynists or were casually misogynist themselves, but thought of themselves as good people because they thought they were nice to a girl once. The 'My Personality is stored in the balls' moment made me laugh so hard I almost cried. (An unsung quality of the series as a whole is how fucking funny it is.) Aaron finally getting over the brooding phase and reacting to whole thing like the human shitposter he is is exactly how I figured he'd cope. But then the tone turns right around with the 'girls' comment, and I feel a knot form in my stomach. It's so good. "How much of Dorley is a deconstruction of Force Femme and how much of it is just a Force Femme story that happens to be self aware?" is a question for smarter women then me to answer. There's obviously multiple readings you can make and the I've finally given up on finding the Correct Interpretation and accepted that the Hall can be a stand in for many different things at once. At this point, to make what is probably a very dumb comparison, 'It's like Watchmen but instead of breaking down Superheroes as a genre it breaks down a niche genre of erotica by centering it as an allegory for the trans experience' is the best explanation (of many) I've been able to give to my cis friends.

Katie Fuchs

Yes yes! Independent use of the Watchmen comparison!

Bri

Honestly I'm just glad to know I wasn't completely off base for proposing it! I wasn't sure how dumb it sounded as I typed, but despite their differences it's one of the best comparatives pieces of media I can think of.

Katie Fuchs

I have been calling her our Alan Moore. Tooooold you so Alyson.

grrl

came for the force femming, stayed for the mug lore

Nina

The more I read about Bea’s background the more I appreciate your skill as an author. At the start I had Bea in my head as this Grandmother like figure just aching at force femming boys based on some moral code, but now I more or less just see that she’s a traumatized woman aiming at weakening Grandmother’s influence and getting her lover back. I’m extremely invested in her background and future. Of course, I can’t wait to see Aaron accept his femininity and pick her new name :D Also, having the mugs be a part of what made Bea feel normal is so sweet and cute ahhhhhh!
