Synopsis: Mortimer Snerd is a mess. Drowning in debt, trapped in a job he both hates and doesn't understand, working for his old high school bully. No girlfriend, no hobbies, no will to live. Which is awkward when he gets abducted and forced to fight monsters to eat their delicious cores. The cores make him feel so, so good. And let him do... things. Things that he was quite sure were impossible

At which point, everything starts getting much better. For him.

And... I'm going to be using you guys as my broader beta-readers on this one.

The book has already gone through a few tweaks on tone and some refinements to the world building, and I really like the concept and setting. But do you guys like it? The key question, always, is- After reading the sample, do you want to read more? I'm looking for feedback, feedback, and feedback.

Tomorrow, shortly after Weeaboo posts, I'll upload the first five or so chapters. The chapters are only going to stay up for a week! Then they come down while I put the finishing touches on everything. When the book launches, I'll put them in their own tier.

Now. Having said all that. I am feeling a little nervous about this book. Fair to say it's not in the Royal Road Meta, and I need to be writing the next book with broad appeal. So... I'm putting up a poll of very broad archetypes of serial web novels. Knowing what you know about me, which of these archetypes would you like to see me take on? Poll should be up later today.

My dog had his checkup a month after stopping treatment, just to see how he is doing. Some very expensive imaging later, we got the good news- no sign of the disease spreading, and the tumor has shrunk slightly. His particular type of cancer is incurable in dogs, so "No progression of the disease" is a big win. We are hopeful, with some basis, that he lives long enough to chase the chipmunks in his favorite field this coming summer.

My instinctual reaction is I probably wouldn't read it but I can't tell you why

I'm in. Looks good.

What an unfortunate name.

João Vene

I know weird names are your thing, but Snerd, the former bullied nerd is... yeah.

I can't say I'd pick it up out of a list on RR, but I would have said the same thing about Weeaboo, and, happily, I was wrong in my prejudice.

And to join the other people questioning the name, is the main character supposed to be named after the Edgar Bergen dummy, or was that subconscious?

WarbyPicus

Congratulations on being the very first person to spot that. Yes, exactly, and you will see why in Chapter 1.
