Slumrat was explicitly a satire on Xianxia novels. Weeaboo is doing game lit dirty, and generally making fun of tower defense/gacha games. So... what would you guys like to see me take on next? Click all that you would want to read, and please comment on why! Also comment if I missed something, I might just use your suggestion.

Please no horror Pokemon style would be cool

Werewolf romance, as to why.. do i gotta say? Wolf ftw! But also conan, i got into the lore of that setting through conan exiles. Shiny maker because a lot of crafting atories has the crafter becoming a powerful fighter and it'd be interesting to see a new path.

Leaf

Horror sounds good but the only horror litrpg I know is the super popular game at Carosel. How should yours be different?

Zauber

Werewolf romance novel- the tropes being used and or abused would be entertaining enough, but having any sort of actual love story would scratch the slice of life itch I get on occasion Super hero- too many of these types go in either the goodie goodie, or "superman evil!?" Route, and I think you could bring an interesting take regardless of what it is Litrpg/progression- I like the genre as long as it's well written, and your satirical takes willl hit well, especially with how much generic slop there is out there

Zaeron

I would still love to see you do some actual genuine world building in a non-satire way. All of your world building is super fun but it always seems very top down - you seem to start from "No Game No Life but the game is horrible and the gods are dead" or "Xianxia but the planet hates everyone and nobody is actually cultivating they're all just outer sect disciples who think they're hot shit because they're literally incapable of looking up." I really would love to see you build an actual world with actual characters who actually interact - the second book of Slumrat remains your absolute peak for me as an author. Watching Truth bounce off actual real people and care about them and love them and change with them is the best part of the entire series. I liked the rest of it, and I like Weeaboo, but it's.... very much "real person interacts with plastic dolls" and I think you're at your best when you're allowed to have more than one real person interact without it needing like seven layers of existential horror. EDIT - that said I voted for werewolf romance novel, straight up xianxia, and pokemon progression knockoff, because the second and third seem semi in line with this desire, and the first one is... well... obviously funny as fuck?

AnthraxRipple

At this point, I'm curious to see what you'd do with straight horror.

Lets be honest, the werewolves thing was voted only for the fun of it but every story about werewolves and romance crash and burn that makes the hinderburg look like a candle

Kain

I mean Carousel is a very specific thing there’s tons and tons of ways to do horror that wouldn’t even resemble that in any way, hell Carousel isn’t even horror a decent amount of the time like they’re in horror movies as settings but the story is about more meta narratives and survival lit rpg than horror.

Jon Davis

I'm gonna have to do it: I'd like to see your take on a Supernatural Harem Romcom, ala Rosario Vampire or Mahou Sensei Negima.

Jon Davis

If you haven't looked into it, 'The Simalcrum' is a fantastic story on Royal Road that analyzes the idea of a dating sim/anime from a medium aware protagonist. I think you could put a real fancy spin on it, and I'd very much enjoy the *required* secondary character building of a dedicated harem romcom. Both Truth and Liam live in stories where they face near constant isolation in one way or another, and are the only characters that 'matter', really- I'd bet you wouldn't allow that to be the case in a Harem Romcom.

Heliosa

Would love a well-made crafting story with your usual touch, think there'd be a lot of fun scenes where they're forced to actually *sell* their shiny baubles, putting a price on art, marketing...

phantom

Horror horror! I also gave a vote to inside a werewolf fantasy. Under the assumption the inside a werewolf is literal and I will be disappointed if it is anything else.

phantom

Oh yeah. If you consider romance may I recommend horror and romance together inspired by Slay the Princess?

WickedlyDesigned

I just recently had an idea of a story that I would love to read: litRPG apocalypse, with a system that actually is balanced long term and severely limits power creep without straight up putting in a low level cap, with actual horror monsters coming in where even a single kill done through the cooperative group effort of days/weeks of prep is an achievement. Maybe something with an actual tutorial, that isn't its own main quest, but something that actually only teaches the system's basics - but doesn't prepare you for the insane difficulty scaling you are going to be facing. And I would love to see your take on the idea.

austin kutz

I kind of really want a story in the same universe as Slumrat except with a more traditional xianxia protagonist. Hell, you never did reveal what the second gem of Botis was, did you? You can maybe expand the universe so that the Abrahamic universe is just one among many

austin kutz

Yeah, most of the actual horror in The Game at Carousel is meta horror like "how sure are you that your dead parents aren't actually in here somewhere, trapped in an illusion of infinite suffering" instead of "oh, no, I'm being eaten by horrifying monsters again" The ease of resurrection massively takes away from the horror of death, but the fates worse than death still maintain their horrifying charm. 0/10, do not want to wonder a forest for a subjective eternity as a zombie.

Solo

I want the next installment of to the far shore ;)

Solo

Have you read his previous novel To the far shore?

João Vene

I've never been disappointed by any of your stuff, so I think I'm fine with anything. That being said, if To The Further Shore or Slumrat: Slum Harder are not possible, I'd like to see what you'd do in a more traditional, LotR style fantasy setting. What would traditional fantasy Warby look like? Are elves imperialists and race supremacists? Did humans wipe them out in ages past? Is there a prophecy, a dark lord? What do your hobbits smoke? Is society inexplicably medieval, even with magic? I think I'd like to see a traditional Xianxia too.... But if you go to the Xianxia well again, I'd rather see Slumrat 2. Either more Truth, or you retire him and introduce a plucky teenager joining the Hidden Mountain Sect, famous for their Humans as Rats philosophy, and their Patriarch that insists he's really called Truth. Yes. His parents named him that.

"Shiny Maker- a crafting novel, more focused on making stuff than using it" You´re clearly very invested in making sure all of your content is thoroughly researched. A craft novel with actual insight with material science or material "thaumathurgy" would be amazing. I had an idea a while back to write a story about an artifact conservator (imagine a art conservator, but one who is tasked with maintaining magical or holy artifacts) and the challenges of procuring theologicaly, chronologicaly, thematically appropriate materials to restore valuable - and powerful - artifacts for families, churches, universities, etc. Since artifacts obviously get more powerful with age, even if they´re ACTUALLY aging and degrading with use. Imagine the "baumgartner restoration" youtube channel but with actual gods and relics, and saint bones or such. To see something like that come alive in a talented writer´s hands would be amazing.

Werewolf romance would especially good if you tackled the connection the queer community has with monster fucking. Monster transformations have an especially strong connection with trans audiences.

Proudfeets

I enjoy the horror elements you've worked into Weeaboo, but I don't think I'd like a full story of it. The most fun part of this story has been the utilization of the world's mechanics in construction. A more crafting-oriented story would be a lot of fun

WarbyPicus

I gotta say, the vote distribution is wild. Leaving aside the werewolf thing (which is going to lead me to some HILLARIOUS reddit posts in the near future) the vote distribution is pretty close. Like... way closer than I thought. Two obvious losers, but over all, people have very diverse tastes!

WarbyPicus

I wouldn't even post it to royal road. There is a romance novel focused platform, and it's 70% Werewolf Romance. Which is, judging by the covers and titles, just a smorgasbord of fetish writing. So many fetishes. Just... all the fetishes.

Jon Davis

I'd be interested to see what would be chosen if people HAD to choose just one option. I think a ton of people, myself included, picked one or two favs and then tossed on werewolf cause it was funny-if they had to pick between it and, say, Traditional Cultivation with exclusive votes we might definitely see a different readout

Gabriel

It seems that I have underestimated this fanbases desire for hunk and/or sexy werewolves.

WarbyPicus

I've been reading some synopses and book samples. I am now privately convinced that if someone tells you they are into romance novels, they are letting that freak flag fly high and proud.

WarbyPicus

A mythic warrior who'll stop at nothing to possess her . . . After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him. A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy . . . Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents -- until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae -- and their notorious dark desires -- ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings. An all-consuming desire . . . Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

Gabriel

I thought that stuff was near exclusively written for lonely women in their 30's. But apparently their is an unseen overlap between those who enjoy reading about magical cyberpunk settings with story focusing on themes like what is man. And wanting to be ravaged by mythical creatures. The world's funny like that init?

Jackson Ragland

Hey Warby, long time lover of your work starting all the way back with far shore. I've read everything you've put out and am just waiting for vol. 2 to be done to binge it for weeaboo. I know I'm late to this and you might've already started but here are my thoughts. I chose Beast Taming, Xianxia, and Old School. All of your novels deal with heavy themes almost to the point sometimes in slumrat where i considered if it's something you just can't help yourself with. I cherished brief moments of levity that you allowed truth because it is ever so rare that your characters aren't dealing with heavy situations and heavier thoughts. I chose Beast Taming and Xianxia because I think truly good books in those genres are vanishingly rare, especially outside of pure pokemon self inserts (seras and others). It's also a chance to add some more levity into your writing while giving those genres a book to be proud of. As for the Old School selection I have wanted to step back into the world of Sinews and Far Shore for years and I couldn't help but selfishly pick it, even if the reason you got away from them was to write something more mainstream AKA profitable. Looking forward to whatever you pick, cheers!
