S01E13 Battle Lines

Well this one felt a lot different, as we were through the wormhole, on a distant moon, dealing with warring factions stuck in a perpetual fight for maybe... infinity? Didn't expect to see Kai Opaka back so soon and I do wonder if we'll see her again (no spoilers!) but I hope so! Engage! 🖖

I don't know if it's my phone, but I hear a lot of background noise in this video.

Having a lot of trouble with my mic on new computer. So noted, I'll keep working on it

I didn't expect to see Jonathan Banks (Breaking Bad) in Star Trek, what a surprise!

Enjoyed it! That's a good question about an iconic set on DS9. Their control area, "OPS" (operations) doesn't show up as regularly as the bridge on the Enterprise. And when it does, there's not usually a wide shot where we see the whole thing. It's a neat looking set though - different levels, stairs and ladders and everything.

Anyone who's seen the first season of Friends probably remembers the laundromat episode, in which a very obnoxious woman hinders Rachel's efforts to wash clothes. That woman was played by Camille Saviola (Opaka). It's the only other role of hers I've seen. Anyone who's seen Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul probably recognizes the voice, if not the face, of Jonathan Banks (Shel-la). He made a lasting impression on the other two shows as Mike Ehrmantraut, and I strongly recommend watching them if you haven't already.

I liked this one a lot. Imagine the horror of being stuck in a never-ending cycle of dying and reviving. Someone like Kai Opaka really would be their only way out. It's sort of similar to the Buddhist idea of samara, which is the cycle of death and rebirth (reincarnation), and Kai Opaka showing them a different way to be is not unlike them attaining nirvana and liberating themselves from samsara. Only here they are liberating themselves to build, we hope, a heaven on earth (ok, not "earth" but whatever planet they are on lol). Kai Opaka then would be a Bodhisattva which is an enlightened person who selflessly stays in the world to help others liberate themselves from samsara

Their main operations center is the central location at top of the station. Ops is what they say instead of Bridge like the other shows.

Ditto on the noise. When I saw this episode way back when, it really blew my mind. The fact that they could introduce a significant character and then effectively kill them off to advance a storyline was shocking. It was a bold step in writing, and indicated that this series was prepared to "go there." I don't know where I got that feeling, but I did. And i was not wrong. The writing in this series is absolutely top-notch in big events and small. You have so much to experience here, I can't wait to see your reactions. It is amazing watching these all again through "new eyes."

Tom Evans

"Ops" where Sisko's office is located would be the closest thing to the bridge on the Enterprise. It's the pointy tower in the middle. But the most iconic location on DS9 is the Promenade. It's where you find Quark's, the infirmary, Odo's security office, the Bajoran temple, and several points of interest. It's the center-most ring of the station circling around Ops. The middle ring is the Habitat Ring where sleeping quarters are located, and the outer ring is the Docking Ring.

Lee R.

lol yep didn't even know him when first saw this, so def a cool surprise!

I missed a lot of early DS9 when it first aired, but I did catch this one, and boy, did it ever leave an impression that this show was *not* like TNG, what with its shocking 'death' of a re-occurring character, the emotional breakdown of a regular, and an un-tidy resolution. Wasn't quite enough to hook me in yet, but the seeds were definitely planted for future consideration.

Julian San

Jonathan Banks got an “And…as…” credit and this was 30 years ago! 👏

Alecco

Def. the Ops and Quarks for me. and another place not yet revealed!

jon bolton

This was a lot better than i remembered. Usually this is the only Season 1 episode i skip on rewatch, so i've not seen it for about 15 years.

Gábor Árki

It's important to remember that Kira spent most of her life fighting the Cardassians. Transitioning to a "peaceful" life on the station isn't easy. Many soldiers returning home have issues adjusting back to a normal life. Due to her past she most likely suffers from PTSD.

Clay F

I like this episode ok. Interesting/creative concept of not being able to die. I thought Mike was good acting. I thought Kira not the most stellar acting this episode, though she did have her moments she was convincing. Some of the effects seem more like a B movie or a play, which is fine. The series seeming episodic so far.

Harmony through Time

The Cardassians occupied and nearly destroyed Bajor for over forty years, they may have started closer to sixty years, so this was before Kira was born some before her parents were born, then Kira fought them she has a lot inside her

Jessica Gamble

You will find certain places on DS9 iconic eventually, but I think the true magic is in the relationships of the crew. Also, I just want to say that I don't have anyone I can't watch Trek with at the mo, and watching along with you is like watching with a friend. It's so fun!

Jason Scade

Welcome. :) Did you ever see the very strange and unique, cult sci-fi series 'Lexx'? It's quite out there, excellent concepts and ideas in it though.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I really like that shot of us taking the turbolift down from Ops while looking up at Odo, looking exasperated as he often does lol It's cool as fuck and really adds to the hurried "what the hell is going on" feeling of the scene.

Noremac

Pretty good episode. Felt very classic Trek. And look, it's Mike! You know when Jen watches Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul I think it'd be novel for her to watch it in 'in universe' chronological order; start watching Better Call Saul til the second half of the last season, then Breaking Bad and El Camino, and finally finish up the Gene episodes of Better Call Saul to end the series.

Michael Goggin

The little ships are indeed called runabouts. They're like a super shuttle (or very small starship). Capable of up to warp 4 and armed with phasers and photon torpedoes. Mostly meant for an extended missions away from a central base of operations. The runabouts on DS9 are all named after rivers on Earth.

Paul Sophocleous

I believe they are officially (as in, within Starfleet) known as Danube-class starships.

TheADHDOverlord

After you mentioned not seeing much about the Bajoran's in a recent episode and how the series had felt very episodic so far...all i could think about was THIS episode.

Alex Smith

The "iconic place" you're asking about that's like the Bridge would be Ops.
