S07E12 The Pegasus S07E13 Homeward

The Pegasus is one of my favourite episodes, one of the few with interpersonal conflicts among the crew are often the most interesting ones.

The Prime Directive does feel like a grey area because humans make very emotional decisions. What if that was our planet that was about to have its atmosphere disappear, we'd want someone to save us. We see animals about to go extinct and so we save them. But those decisions aren't always great. Some conversation projects have actually had negative consequences. However in these cases it BECAUSE of us that they're going extinct so it's definitely easier to swallow. In another episode (I think of Voyager) it's argued that if you save that species and they grow up to be a super aggressive species, you've not only saved them but negatively affected other beings. That's the issue with making decisions like that.. you can never see far enough down the road to make sure that you don't make a wrong choice. Either way, standing by and watching an entire species be wiped out would be an excruciating decision.

With regards to the prime directive in this episode, I agree Jen that this episodeā€™s ethics seem out of character. Thereā€™s been instances in the past where Picard broke the prime directive because it was ā€œthe right thing to doā€ (Picardā€™s own quote from ā€œA Matter of Timeā€). Every action we take, good or bad, can result in negative consequences as that is just how life is, so they might as well act within their own consciences and let the chips fall as they will. Also, the episode blames Nicholai for being irresponsible, but everything he does in this episode is pretty well thought out. I am on his side this episode, not on Picardā€™s. Not saving them because of something they might do to another culture in 500 years is similar to me not saving a childā€™s life who is drowning because they might turn out to be a murderer down the road.
