Got to add this: the curmudgeonly old scientist was played by Edmund Gwenn who also played Kris Kringle (Santa Claus) in the holiday classic 'Miracle on 34th Street.' Maybe not as deep, but certainly as sweet as ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.’

I'm just watching this now, but I recognized the police chief as James Whitmore, the actor who would play Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption.
