Actually, you are doing great with following up. Go Sahong is the grandpa of Aeshin, since he sent letters to other noblemen to get together for Joseon , Wanik wants to get rid of him. Go Sahong feels it, that’s why he wants Aeshin to get married asap. Because without him, Aeshin could be in a great danger.

I‘m so happy you‘re enjoying it and keeping up with the story and characters so well! It’s incredible watching this again even if I‘ve already rewatched it several times. This is one more reason for me to look forward to weekends at the moment <3 One scene in this episode that was very memorable for me was the one where Lee Wanik revealed the letter to the emperor and he had to lie that it was fake, along with the soundtrack in that scene the desperate facial expressions really showed that they know this is ultimately the doom of Joseon, it was so sad to watch.

I agree that they’re keeping up really well, they might not think so when they get confused or miss something but honestly compared to other people I’ve seen they understand 10 times more haha, also they show so much interest in learning about the historic events and stuff, it’s very nice to see!

I'm so happy that you guys are getting more and more invested in the characters and the plot points. I think the show fleshes characters out really well, but you have to have the patience and interest to take it all in. I like how you recognise the similarities between Eugene and Gu Dongmae's experiences of Joseon, and I love how the show takes them through different arcs despite that. You really see that even in their interactions with Aeshin. I mean, I know you guys comment on how Gu Dongmae is down bad lol but in truth, it's his honour that makes him devote his life to her since that's what he owes. I'd say he never really conceives of being with Aeshin because as rebellious as he is in other aspects of his life, he loves her too much and understands that even in the Joseon she is trying to save/create, he is not worthy of her. He easily hated her for what she represented and spoke harshly in retaliation when they were kids, only to realise that although she was naive, she really meant what she said and never judged him on status alone. Meanwhile, although Eugene also struggled to become what he is today, being an officer in the military of a more powerful country makes his status infinitely higher. He is held back more by him telling himself that he is only in Joseon temporarily. He does not have the same lasting derision or insecurities about his own worth. He also has the military and government behind him as a support. Unfortunately for Gu Dongmae, his power is only in his own physical prowess and the loyalties of his closest men...so he has little more to offer Aeshin other than his protection.

Exactly! Dong-mae originally lived in Japan but returned to Joseon specifically because of Ae-shin. He came back just to see her. It’s not an exaggeration to say that Ae-shin is the reason he lives. He dedicates himself to protecting her, to the point where his entire existence seems centered around her. Because of his genuine love for Ae-shin and his unwavering desire to protect her, neither Eugene nor Hui-seong can truly hate him.
