Eastern medicine is no joke, guys. You can't compare it to the half-assed medicine of way back when in the western world. surgery was out of the question due to ideology and there were no antibiotics, but herbal medicine, acupuncture, and "touching of the wrist" all meant something and was based on ages and ages of clinical data in modern terms. and "life expectancy" that you seem to refer to is actually the "average" and it was so low because of infant mortality. If you managed to survive through infancy, chances are you'd live pretty decent years. I'd say age 60 and up would be considered "longevity" but that doesn't mean everyone was expected to die around their 30s.

They didn't calculate average age that way, they didn't take infant deaths in the equation, but they definitely took early deaths from war and sickness into account. So in a way the life expectancy was higher than 30 but it was higher everywhere in the world as well. It's just constant wars and plagues that lowered it dramatically.
