The 90s X-men clusterfuck continues, i don't even know how many of these i recorded, considering the massive stack i had there surely must be more somewhere. This episode ended up being all about just one issue, cause it's a hell of an issue.

X-Men #28, the ultimate example of why you should never neglect the long boxes in the back of the store. Searching through back issues is like spelunking, you find a lot of broken glass and beer can rings but every once in a while there's a goddamn sunken treasure.

This easily findable issue and dirt cheap back issue from the early 90s happens to be one the finest single issues in the X-men's entire history. The art work, crisp clean and gorgeous. The story, brisk and fast paced. The characterization and dialogue, immaculately on point and dripping with personality. The conflict, philosophical and intense. And the resolution, a complete and total mental ass-kicking that serves as the most satisfying villain squash since Frieza came to earth and got diced like an onion by Future Trunks.

There's no false advertising with this one, it's exactly what the cover implies, a vicious psychological showdown between Jean Grey and the cretinous creep known as Sabertooth. Who wins? Spoiler: do not fuck with the god-level telepath.

This issue kicks such unprecedented levels of my ass, it singlehandedly made this die hard Emma Frost stan see the light and finally learn to love Jean Grey. After 30 some years of seeing her primarily as the X-men's female straight man/plot device/repetitious martyr, by the end of this issue i was lookin at Jean like when Frank watches Mac's badass homo dance with the hot god chick.

It's one thing when a character is written well enough to convey the full complexity of their personality, but when that conveyance of character is so flawlessly, elegantly complete that it unlocks an appreciation for the character that i apparently always had floating around in my brain but just never thought about before now, well that's an achievement on par with the time i got exactly the most charming level of drunk at the speed dating event and cucked 50 guys at once.

Jean grey is fucking badass. The ass-kicking she dishes out in this story is almost as badass as the time I had to fight off a bunch of guys and landed a perfect uppercut on this douche in a Vermin Supreme costume at Cody's Halloween party and knocked the stupid boot off his idiot head.

My point is i'm cool as hell, and it turns out so is Jean Grey. Deep Down i think i always knew, i just needed to see some solid proof before i could articulate it. Now that i've seen, i'll never forget, just like i'll never forget the time i gave that awesome wedding speech and made all the bridesmaids fall in love with me at once but they couldn't do nothin about it cause the chick i showed up with was hotter than all of em.

Man, i got so many rad stories. I should have my own damn comic.

Sounds great, cant wait to listen in my commute to work.

Hearing you go on about Jean reminds me of that panel cast episode a thousand years ago where you discussed the importance of Wolverine and Cyclops’ rivalry/friendship (before they ruined it). Always liked the way you described it, as well as this episode’s appreciation for Jean, feels like a continuation of that Logan/Scott discussion. Now the Trinity for the XsMen feels complete. Loved hickman’s Fantastic Four/FF run, his X-Mem stuff sounds .. Interesting.
